  • Hi everyone! It's Liset from Sweet Girl Farms. I often see people misidentify persimmons, so today I cover the different varieties that we grow. Most of these you can find at our farm stand! Let me know if you have any questions and hope this video helps!
Thank you for watching. Please follow me on all my socials linked below.
Sweet Girl Farms is a year round farm stand located in Reedley, CA. Liset, the farmer running the stand, started flower farming in 2019 and has expanded to growing veggies as well. I am getting a Chocolate Persimmon from Trees of Antiquity next year. I have never had Persimmon before. It stated 'superb' flavor, so that is what I went with.

Next to the office where I work here in GA, we have a wild American persimmon growing. The fruit it gives is barely over the size of a large cherry and it is seedy, 'cause a dozen of yards from it there's male persimmon tree growing as well. It's astringent AF if it's not jelly soft. But when it's jelly soft it's the most delicious persimmon I've ever had in my life. It has a somewhat caramel flavor with a hint of chocolate undertone. It's so good, I'm stratifying its seeds right now. 😂😂😂

The thing that gives the persimons/kakis (family name is persimon, but the fruit name is kaki) the drymouth/astringent taste are called tannins.

Yes, persimmons are an amazing fruit that many people don’t know about or have never eaten! But it’s outstanding!! Fuyu can be eaten in any stage, firm or as it’s softening, until it becomes a super soft, super sweet creamy pudding! You can freeze the soft creamy fruit to eat or to bake with at another time!
I also bake with the crunchy stage & it’s outstanding!! The Asian culture also love & value Persimmons! They dry then whole for future consumption(great snack👍🏻🤗)!!
**Trying to limit the birds & rodents is the biggest challenge of ALL!!
Liset -- what does your family do to limit/discourage the birds & rodents? I would love your ideas!!

We hang up shiny strings that reflect lots of light to deter birds from eating them, but its hard to protect our fruit from animals 100%.

Hi! I have a question. Where I live, we have two persimmon varieties that you can buy, and it seems to be Fuyu and Hichiya, but I have read and heard from many sources that the Fuyu is the one that can be eaten firm while the Hichiya has to be super soft, but in my experience it's the opposite? At least with the Hichiya looking one. It is astringent and bitter when unripe, yes, but when it gets some little brown spots (which I've heard is sugar culmulations?) but is still sorta firm, it is perfectly fine to eat. I prefer them firm. The peel is also edible on these. But I've always heard that the Hichiya can only be eaten soft, and people don't tend to et the peel. So this might be another variety, but I don't know which?

Hello! Fuyu persimmons do best in zones 7-10. Fuyu is a Japanese variety. However, there are American varieties that will be more tolerant of the cold in your zone 5. Here are a few links with info to help you grow some delicious persimmons :D Happy growing!!

You keep saying how soft persimmons are for baking. They are as much for eating fresh as the hard ones are. When persimmons get soft, especially the astringent ones, they develop a better flavor than they have when they are still hard.
