While practicing the tricks of the trade, a neophyte "hacker" accomplishes the nearly impossible: he hacks the highly secured computer at the Ellingson Mineral Corporation. But in doing so, he unknowingly taps into a high-tech embezzling scheme masked by a computer virus with the potential to destroy the world's ecosystem! And when the young hacker and his pals are targeted for the crime, the group must launch a massive cyberspace attack - one that will hopefully clear their names and prevent ecological disaster.
By launching the careers of Jonny Lee Miller (Elementary) and Academy Award®-winner Angelina Jolie (1999 Supporting Actress, Girl, Interrupted), Hackers became an underground hit instantly, inspiring music and fashion for the brand-new Internet culture, and has been even hailed as prophetic in its use of computers and hacking.

Lillard is such a criminally underrated actor. He’s arguably the most memorable character in every movie he’s in.

Cereal was a very Shakespearan character archetype. Speaking truth to power, and providing wisdom from an unlikely source. He was the highlight of the movie.

Matt Lillard is one of the most underrated actors out there! He was awesome in Scream, Twin Peaks, and Hackers, among others!

Hackers is and was it's own aesthetic. like *what the hell* is going on with this movie, all I know is I love it.
It basically took 90s youth subculture, and magnified it a thousand times. Its so over the top but at the same time so recognisable for people who grew up in the 90s.

3 years later me who doesn't even remember writing this comment would just like to add that the same could be said for national treasure, John Malkovich. And no one thinks he can't act. Truth is: when you're really good at something, you're allowed to break the rules.
I dont think he will ever know that he truly was a lead actor in this film. If it werent for him, this movie isnt a cult classic.

The Jonny Lee Miller Paradox: Jonny Lee Miller and Ewan McGregor are two actors with remarkably similar attributes, but if there were two identical films with one of them as the lead in each, which one would you buy a ticket for?
Not that Jonny Lee Miller is worse or anything, but McGregor has an x-factor that you can’t manufacture.
Chris Pratt is another. He has been lead in big films, but I don’t think many people watch a film specifically because it is a Chris Pratt film.
Guardians of the Galaxy works because he anchors a group of far weirder and more interesting characters. Hackers works identically. A bunch of much wilder characters are in a story that centres around Miller. The presence he has enables this, rather than him lacking as others chew scenery.

Chewed scenery? Matt, give yourself more credit, Cereal Killer is an amazingly fun character and an icon of brash, no holds barred anarchy that you perfected with Steve-O in SLC Punk

Boy, Lillard's best work is in that movie. Not that other works are worst, I think he really matured from Cereal Killer times, but that character is in my heart forever. Thanks for bring him to live the way you did, you are too awesome for this world

Omg hackers is one of my favorite movies from the 90s. Plus the UK jungle/drum and bass. Its where i fell in love with The Prodigy (RIP Keith Flint).

He is such a great actor. It was sweet and sad in the same way that Scooby Doo killed his career in a way but at the same time kept his career. I wish to see a parallel world where he would have a different career and what he could have achieved.

My Favorite Character in Hackers, is Matthew's, Next to Phreak. Such an Amazing Movie. I think it would have Flopped if the Roles were Switched. I also love the Clothes in the Movie. I wish we could go back.

He is so fucking underated, Scream, Hackers, SLC Punk, what a legend, i lve his movies so much, i can watch SLC Punk and Hackers everyday and never get bored, he is truly an amazing actor, everyone is hackers was so good! I wish Matt would do more movies like this nowadays.

Nobody could've made Cereal Killer what it was, so I'm almost glad he didn't run the lead, despite him missing some opportunities having been a lead.
