      @@justafig community for sure! What he does is a labor of love and a personal saceifice. He is making these varieties available to collectors far and wide who might not otherwise have such opportunity. I for one am very thankful and pray for good health for him and his family that he may continue for many years. So many of us await his sale all year long with great anticipation.

    Hi Harvey! It's Evain, Hope you are doing well. I can't believe you do all that pruning with so little help. It's so much work! Not just the pruning, but cleaning and also writing the name on each cutting, THEN after that all the orders and the shipping. Sounds like an exhausting month, but I'm sure it's all worth it. Would love to see the process of how you prune your trees if you ever get a chance one day. Good Luck with your sales, as if you need it. AND have a very happy and prosperous new year.

    It’s good to see that soil looking so moist after the last couple years out west. CA needs the rain! Hopefully, that makes a serious dent in the drought.

    When you sanitize them, what are you killing on them?

    Do you ever need volunteers to help with pruning/whatever? I'm in Placerville and plan to (hopefully) buy several new varieties from you when the sale goes live but if its possible to help, I'd love the experience.

      You can send us an email (email address is on our website), but the last time I had a couple of volunteers there was some fun visiting but too much distraction to get our job done well. I threw away some cuttings that day because of a possible mix-up.

    Wonderful to feel as though I was walking through this beautiful orchard with you. Do figs always go dormant even in warm climates? This was the first that I saw this might be so, since here in zone 5, mine are put away in the garage for the winter fully denuded of leaves. Please tell us all how old most of these fig trees are. The caliper of some looks as if they could be 50 years old. Did you start this nursery, and where is it? I have seen most of your “ individual variety tasting and description” videos and have learned so much from them. Many thanks for the knowledge you share.

      Hello, thanks for watching. We started this orchard in 2013. We vacationed in Madeira recently and the elevation where figs are grown had not gone below 60F yet while we were there but were still somewhat going dormant but in some warmer climates they grow year-round and never produce breba. Our orchard is located a little south of Sacramento, California.

    Hi Harvey. God Bless. This scene reminds me of the old country. When you planted your varieties did you plant them randomly or are they grouped by type or perhaps ripening dates?
    Happy New Year!

    • @Figaholics
      @Figaholics  Год назад +2

      Thank you. They were somewhat planted randomly, mostly in the order I acquired them, but sometimes planted such things that were thought to be similar close to one another to compare them more easily.

    Really cool looking in the winter. I'm curious, what is the distance between trees and rows?

    • @margaretmarshall3645
      @margaretmarshall3645 Год назад +4

      Harvey plants his figs 16’ apart, in rows 20’ apart. (I made note of it when he answered that question in another video.)

    • @Figaholics
      @Figaholics  Год назад +3

      20' between rows, 16' between trees (except last row which I squeezed in to 8' to plant more varieties). Thanks for watching.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79 Год назад +1

      @@Figaholics Thanks Harvey, that helps. My orchard is miniature compared to yours so I'm trying to fit a lot of varieties into a small space. Have you noticed any new problems with the 8' plantings?

    • @Figaholics
      @Figaholics  Год назад +3

      They overlap a lot and a less vigorous variety has a tough time getting enough sunlight. Many trees grow taller than I like just to reach for the sunlight. In this row some trees are duplicates and I will probably remove them. In my climate, I probably would not plant closer than 12-14' but I had already planted trees in this row 16' and my only option was to interplant since I did not want to create an eighth row as it would have interfered with another crop.

      Harvey just expanded on his answer with the video below. Hmmm…he points out it depends on whether you live somewhere where your trees die back or have to be cut way back and mulched in winter, or not. I’m in SoCal myself, so gonna measure out 12 feet between mine from now on, after seeing how crowded his 8’-apart trees appear! Very helpful, Harvey! Looking forward to your sale.

    Do yo have any varieties that taste similar to a peach? I’ve heard Olympian does but I see you don’t have that variety. My 3 favorite fruits are persimmons, peaches and figs. Plum circulio are so bad here it’s impossible to grow worm free peaches. I have too many wild plum thickets in my area which is a breeding ground for them. A TAMU stone fruit professor told me it’s a losing battle trying to grow worm free stone fruit when lots of wild plum thickets are in your area. I’ve already made a list of 30 varieties I want to buy from you if the price per variety is in my budget. I mostly grow improved pecans.I have around 200 pecan trees.

    • @Figaholics

      I don't always detect this flavor of peach but sometimes Fico Pesca d'Oro tastes like a peach to me and was felt to have that flavor by Jon Verdick of Encanto Farms and thus given that name.
