  • This week Dr. Jack Deere is coming on the show to discuss “filled with the Spirit” in scripture. Does “filled with the spirit mean speaking in tongues” or does it mean something else?
For those who do not know Jack, He was an associate professor of Old Testament at Dallas Seminary. In the late 1980s, he abandoned his earlier theological position, announcing that he had experienced the charismatic gifts for himself through the ministry of John Wimber.
We are really looking forward to having Jack on the show. Tune in this Monday at 8:30pm CST

Jack and I had similar training in hermeneutics. Both of us graduated from Cessationist schools. Since then, I've been drawn by careful exposition by Jack and others. I love this man for listening to and learning from the Holy Spirit what we didn't get in our schooling. There's nobody more I'm attuned to than Jack.
The hosts are pretty cool too. 🤗

Excellent. I’m sifting through the stories connected with Mike Bickle, for obvious reasons. I have heard about Jack Deere for years. But I’ve not heard him speak. I watched Jack’s son, Stephen, on ‘Leaving the Message’ this morning. I also read one of Stephen’s recent articles posted in his substack. He’s provided an excerpt from a chapter Jack Deere wrote about Paul Cain, as well. Stephen shared this morning that his dad is dealing with some age related health issues currently. I’m looking forward to Jack Deere coming forward to share with us his understanding of Paul Cain’s influence on Mike Bickle, Rick Joiner, Chris Reed and others. The Lord is revealing so much to us, all at once. It can certainly make our head’s spin. We need Jack and others to help us navigate these waters that are uncharted for many of us.

My heart has been hardened, because I’ve felt like the abuses were not going to be addressed. This program touched on the subject in an excellent way, bringing to light all of the layers that have taken place for decades. I don’t have compassion for Mike. I know I should. But as justice will be made to take place, even Mike can benefit if he will finally repent for the abuses he has inflicted on so many-including his children and grandchildren. Thank you, again, for this wonderful program!

Deere is modeling pursuing biblical theology, which must be done well prior to arriving at systematic theology. This is seeing how each writer develops and uses terms in his context. As we make these observations, we wait until all data is clearly established -- prior to mixing writers and eras of scripture. So many errors dissolve and apparent contradictions resolve when we can precede systematic (doctrinal) theology with biblical (contextual) theology. Thank you, Dr. Jack.

Was a year ago he had this interview. I relistened and noticed his strength was his method of getting the listener to look at the texts uses of terms and grammar. The way we do theology he says.
I think he needs to look at the tenses and voice of the references he gave a bit more. Luke phrase " filled with the (Holy)Spirit" is always in aorist tense and passive voice so the filling of the Spirit had been completed before they spoke, and they were passive recipients, they were active in the speaking after. At one point Jack Deere said Peter was still being filled as he spoke before the Sanhaderein to fit it into his idea of prophetic empowerment. Using his own method I'd question that.
There are too many different views about the Holy Spirit around. I think Jack Deeres method will help clear away many of them. I say that as one who disagrees with his view.

Definitely a phrase that is open to opinions. Because the it is used so infrequently and vaguely. I love it though whatever it was!

The event in Acts 2:1 - 4 is referred to by four different words/phrases, 'baptized in the Spirit' (Acts 1:5), 'filled with the Spirit' (2:4), 'pour out my Spirit' (2:17) 'Holy Spirit fell on' (11:15). When Peter explains Pentecost with Joel's prophesy signs and wonders included in his explanation. It seems to expand 'filled with Spirit' beyond just empowerment for evangelism. And surely Luke wants us to understand that 2:42 - 47 was the fruit of 2:1 - 4, 2:47 being one of many fulfillments of 2:21. Could this not also be a part of the fruit of filling with the Spirit in 2:4, expanding it beyond empowerment for evangelism? Dr. DA Carson talks about an interpretive error of making terms in Scripture technical terms. He uses the debate over 'baptized in the Spirit' as an example. I wonder if Dr. Deere is doing the same with his approach here.

Dr. Jack Deere said to look up all the references first in a particular writer to understand him and his theology or his meaning. Then go to another writer and start to do the same. sounds fair for each writer is listen and is not impose a different meaning of what he says. But when talking of Spirit baptism he impose the definition of Paul to the writings of Luke. First look what is Spirit baptism for Luke then what it is for Paul and compare and contrast them.
As a pentecostal we examine first the meaning of Spirit baptism in the books of Luke. And we conclude that Spirit Baptism is evidenced by speaking in tongues. We do not impose Paul's meaning to Luke but look at each writer explain themselves. I do agree that filled with the Spirit can be separated from baptism in the Spirit. I still have some doubts but seems good for now.

    Why do so many non-
    Charismatic people and even
Pastors, completely change and become bold witnesses after 16:20 they receive the Power of the Spirit with the evidence of other tongues??

  • @katiestark7527

I learned at my spirit filled church, we are fulled with the Spirit to be witnesses of Jesus. Then we must walk in step with the Spirit, and be continually filled, desire the gifts etc, etc. I would say that gratifying the Spirit and not the flesh does make one’s life better, ie the fruit of the Spirit.
They did teach that there was evidence of tongues with the filling of the spirit. I believe there will be evidence, but not always tongues( such as prophesy, sense of being overshadowed, miracles, healing, boldness, revelation), but tongues is available to all who are filled with the Spirit.

At the 12:00 point in the video, Dr. Deere asked the question, “if you’re really controlled by the Spirit, how do you ever sin again?” The question seems like an unintentional red herring since the general belief is not that being filled with the Spirit will guarantee we won’t ever commit sin again. Nor is that implied in this context. However, when I read the passage in context, and follow the analogy of the effects of excess wine (it has greater, not total control over the consumer of it), I have a different view from Dr. Deere’s. My view is that one being filled with the Spirit becomes more easily influenced by that infilling, similar to the result of excess wine consumption. Using this metaphor of wine, one of many literary devices the Lord inspired, illustrates the point for clarity. Let’s continue to follow the wine metaphor. Being intoxicated by excess wine eventually wears off. Could it be that being filled with the Spirit dissipates too? I don’t know. I’m only following the wine analogy. If that’s true, by drinking wine again, you’d be intoxicated again. Being filled with the Spirit again restores His influence again. I admit that I’m speculating and asking questions.
After Dr. Deere poses the above question, his argument falls apart with unsubstantiated suggestions of what some people mean by this passage. I’d love to get your feedback…correction…clarity on my thoughts.
By the way, I love your broadcast and Dr. Deere’s teachings! I watched this video over 3 times because of how it illuminated my mind on questions I’d had for years. Thanks for your ministry!

Not everyone baptised in the Spirit who speaks with tongues initially has the gift of tongues. There are those that do not even have the personal prayer language even after being baptised in the spirit. (Confirming 1 co 12:30). Also, Luke records events before the glorification of Jesus and Acts is after. Acts 2:33 explains that the experience of the day of Pentecost (baptism in the spirit) is made possible because Jesus is glorified. This is confirmed by John 7:37-39 also. Therefore, even though the same Greek word is used in Luke and in acts, the plain sense of the readings would suggest that they are talking about different things theologically (although the point still stands concerning the empowering to witness in all cases).

Hi, Charles. Just wanted to clarify what Jack was saying. Never did anyone in scripture, in any of the references Jack quoted, nor anywhere else, did anyone ask to be filled with the Spirit. It happened spontaneously as the Holy Spirit chose to manifest in and through them. Asking to be filled with the Spirit is never taught. So, don't worry that it has not occurred in answer to any of your prayers. I have never spoken in tongues, though I have many times sought that gifting. I have however on numerous occasions experienced the filling of the Spirit and sensed the power of the Lord flow out through me to someone who needed that ministry manifestation.

    • @chaddonal4331

@@Imjustanotherguy Yes, it seems that the point Deere is making is that God fills people with the Spirit to boldly witness to unbelievers. So, rather than pray for the filling of the Spirit, we pray for boldness in our witness. And then we we courageously step out in faith to witness to Christ, it is then that the Holy Spirit fills us, empowering our effectiveness.

    • @alexmarysaint2523

Asking alone is not enough. The presence of God in our life will be influenced by our walk.
Someone who just does a 5 minutes prayer a day and never spend time in the word will not experience much of the Spirit.
On the other hand someone who dedicate a lot of time in prayer, reading the word and spending time with God will have a powerful experience of the Holy Spirit in their life. The fact that Jesus spent so much time in prayer is an example of how we are supposed to walk with God.

Being filled with the Spirit should not be interpreted as being baptized in the Spirit. However, when you get baptized in the Spirit you do get filled with the Spirit.
We find both in the OT and NT, before Acts 2, people being filled with the Spirit. The Spirit would come upon them, fill them temporarily for purpose and then lift off. One can argue that in some of those cases you could see the gifts of the Spirit in operation like prophecy, miracles etc. the only one you don’t see is tongues. It was given in part, limited, and Temporary to fulling God’s purpose before Act 2.
In Act 2 we find them baptized in the Spirit and they got filled. As a result this filling and power can now be accessed anytime. You can access the filling of the Spirit with power through prayer and worship. Eph 5:18, Jude1:20.
The Spirit will fill you. When you access it, the gifts of the Spirit can manifest if gifted.

28 minutes in and all of his examples of filled with the Spirit are Old Covenant examples. Jesus said John was the end of the OT prophets.

1 Comparing being drunk and being filled with the Spirit does not necessitate being “controlled”. More likely means being influenced - which means you still have your own capacities and faculties present.
2 No one says the more you’re empowered by the Holy Spirit in life and ministry the more you get to coax through life. This is silly reasoning. Life will be harder and more challenging; but also easier as it’s in His strength. This is Christianity.
3 This is a word study of Luke. Not a thorough discussion or exposition on being filled with the Spirit and all the different ways in which this same thing is worded throughout the whole scripture. The Bible doesn’t always or at all use the same terms to talk about the same phenomenon.

Good point. Doing biblical theology well can start with word studies, but doesn't end there. Words themselves have semantic ranges (rather than definite fixed meanings), so they must be interpreted in their contexts. Reflexively, contexts may use varying words for the same idea. And sometimes a principle is described (by it's activity) without labeling it by a known word. So, we have to look at words, synonyms, and activities all in context -- and then make judgements.

I understand what Jack is saying but I’m afraid he’s really generalizing the filling of the Spirit. Mary was also “filled” in Luke....and it’s pretty clear that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is not always automatic.....it grieves me when someone says every Christian is baptized in the Spirit. There’s just not enough evidence to prove that. Jesus says you will be clothed with POWER when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. I’m just not buying all of this sadly. I Do respect Jack but I’m not with it 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @Imjustanotherguy
      @Imjustanotherguy 3 года назад +2

Hi. You are confusing the filling of the Spirit with the baptism of the Spirit. Jack was very clear, they are two different experiences. The baptism of the Spirit happens once in a person's life when he or she is joined to the Body of Christ by the indwelling Holy Spirit after the expression of faith in the finished work of Christ. The filling of the Spirit is a repeatable empowering by the Holy Spirit that results in a spontaneous supernatural declaration by the Holy Spirit, usually in front of unbelievers. Elizabeth and Mary would be clear exceptions.

Acts 2:4, filled with the Holy Spirit
Acts 10: 44 Holy Spirit fell on all
10:45 Holy Spirit was poured out
10:47, have recieved the Holy Spirit just as we have. (refering to Acts 2:4)
These are different terminologies, obviously refering to the same thing.

Acts 10:44-46 speaks of the Holy Spirit came on them, then refers to this as the gift of the Holy Spirit being poured out, ... for they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter references this event and i ask what or when is Peter referring to in Acts 11:15 at the beginning and then in vs 16, he associates this event as he remembers what the Lord had said and concluded in 17 that God had given them the same gift. What is this gift and how did they recognize that the gentiles had received it .... for they heard them speaking in tongues. Clearly the gift was the Gift of the Holy Spirit to which he in vs 16 associates it with being baptised with the Holy Spirit and the evidence was tongues as in vs 46.
Peter is clearly referring to this event at Cornelius house as the same as being baptised with the Holy Spirit as the initial experience he and the others received in acts 2.
Tongues being the evidence, doesn't mean that every time we are filled we speak in tongues nor does it mean every time we speak in tongues that it has the same purpose.
Acts 8: 15 Peter and John prayed for the new believers that they might receive the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; because they had simply been baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. It seemed very important for Peter and John to be sent to these new believers just so they could be receive the Holy Spirit.
What was the evidence that Simon saw? There are obviously different workings and manifestations of the Holy Spirit but they begin when we receive power being baptized with the Holy Spirit. Then, it appears that this is only the beginning and subsequent filling is needed once we are baptised with the Holy Spirit. I liken it to filling and refilling a car once you receive the car. Once we receive THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, He gives gifts to work through us for the purpose as He sees. Hence, the gift of tongues, as spoken about in Corinthians, is not a different kind of ability of God giving you the words, to speak in tongues but is a different application .... to edify the body and therefore needs interpretation to be effective for the body and is equated to prophesy. Simply speaking in tongues is an evidence God uses that we have been baptised in the Holy Spirit and it is for speaking to God as Paul says.
There are gifts of the Holy Spirit used as signs for the unbelievers as through Philip in Samaria and there are gifts of the Holy Spirit to edify the body of believers and there are gifts of the Holy Spirit to manifest as God sees the need.
Sadly believers too often either reject the gift of the Baptism and gifts of the Holy Spirit or focus on the manifestation similar to Simon, or the evidence of tongues, as being the gift rather than an evidence by which also allows us to pray in the spirit with the spirit or with our understanding when speaking to God. Christians need to live in the reality of God and allow Him to move in and through us, and quit denying His reality. This all begins with the Baptism with the Holy Spirit evidenced by tongues.

    believe that you all are
wonderful brothers! Thanks for you amazing ministry. However, may I disagree with your 3rd Wave biases? I served the Lord for a while without the Power of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
Later on when I was Baptized with the Holy Spirit I spoke in Tongues like Acts 2, Acts 10, Acts 19 and my Boldness to Witness became a Thousand Fold!! Why?
I believe that one can believe in Jesus and not receive the Power to Witness. Look at Acts 8, they believed and were even Water Baptized but the Holy Spirit did not fall upon them until later.
Also in Acts 11, and 15, when Peter spoke about Cornelius, he said, that God put no difference between us and them, and gave them the same gift the Apostles received in Acts 2.
How did they know? Their only evidence was they heard them speak in Tongues!
Also, in Acts 19, Paul asked certain disciples if they received the Holy Spirit since, or when they believed?
Why even ask that question if people receive the Spirit at belief??
If I believed like the 3rd Wave I would have never received the fullness of the Power to witness.
    Why? Because, the only
normative pattern in the Book of Acts is receiving the Power of the Holy Spirit, is repentance, water Baptism, Spirit Baptism with the evidence of Tonques.

This can be a little misleading about Tongues: the gift of Tongues in any type was not given until the Day of Pentecost. Each time they were “baptized in the Holy Spirit” in Acts, they spoke in Tongues or it is absolutely inferred. Tongues is the only consistent gift associated with the “Baptism in the Spirit”.

Jesus was speaking Acts 1:5, said they would be Baptized with the Holy Ghost, that's sounds like it's pointing to the outpouring of the Holy Ghost in Acts 2:4. When they were FILLED with the Holy Ghost.
Doesn't sound like 2 different experiences rather it sounds like different terminologies refering to the same experience.
In Matthew chapter 3, Jesus said that they would Baptized with the Holy Ghost and 🔥 fire
If the bible ues terminologies interchangeably, why shouldn't we?

We are baptized "BY" one Spirit not "IN" one Spirit Jack. Get it straight. We are made then to drink into that same Spirit. Which is to say take part in the fruit of the Spirit. Again, we are baptized by one Spirit into the body of Christ. That is salvation. Jack screws that up. Also Jack's definition of tongues is vague. Not sure if he's ever figured that one out and yeah I've read his book.

If we proclaim that Jesus is GOD(the Father and Me are one, if you seen me you seen the father etc.) are we , who trhrough faith in him became the body of Christ not part of GOD? I know most of christian will say that is heretical new age stuff. Fine , than just ignore Jesus own words and listen mans teachings.Jesus said that he give ALL the power and authority to us to destroy the work of the dark rulers of this world, age. We will even judge angels but all I heard in most churches that WE are worthless sinners anyway.Something is very very wrong

No offense but I find it hard to believe a man who originally rejected all the gifts and now wants to tell me what it means to be filled!!! We all know a cup can be filled and then emptied! Then filled again.

Your argument that people are not looking further than tongues in act, chapter 2, because of what you read in Matthew clearly shows that you don’t know there’s a difference before, and after the death of Christ. Before Christ died and resurrected, and was glorified, nobody received the Holy Spirit like you and I can today, that’s the major distinction. If you fail to make that distinction, you’re gonna fall into erroneous, teaching, and understanding of what receiving the Holy Spirit is for us in the New Testament.

This guy sounds more like he's against the baptism of the Holy Spirit. He sounds like a cessationist trying to infiltrate people who believe in the baptism of the Spirit. Which is accompanied by tongues in the New Testament. Acts 2 Acts 8 Acts 10 Acts 19.

Hundreds of millions of eyewitnesses of miracles today? Nonsense. @9:30, this guy completely blows his credibility. I've met tons of people in my life, including lots of charismatics, and only one person claimed to see a miracle, and he later denied the faith and admitted he made up the healing story. For this guy to claim there are hundreds of millions of eyewitnesses to miraculous healings today is absolute nonsense, or else we all would know numerous people who saw miracles.

I’m not sure who you hang around, but something like 60% of Americans answer on surveys that they’ve seen something they can only describe as a miracle. I can think of 3 or 4 people pretty close to me who have had miraculous experiences, and I rarely ask anyone. You should read Craig keeners book on miracles. 100% the eyewitnesses are in the hundreds of millions.

@@CollinBoSmith I can't think of a single person in my entire life who says they've experienced a miracle (aside from regeneration). The one person who did claim to have seen healing on a mission trip to Mexico, where a woman's cataracts disappeared, along with the huge tumor in her back, lied, and fell away.
There is no way 60% of Americans have seen miracles. Are you misquoting that stat that says 67% of Americans say miracles are possible?
Use your head. 60% believing they personally have seen a miracle is an obvious falsehood, just like saying 60% claim to have seen UFOs. There's no way it's even close to true, and the fact that you're not discerning enough to recognize that says something.

@@makobean It's a very high percentage. And that's not to say they actually saw one, but many do claim to, and that's in America. Even more so in other nations not in the West. And there's very good evidence for many miracles. Again, read Keeners book on miracles, he has a shorter version out now
