Thanks once again Eric - several new additions to my list. I wanted to also advocate for Yellowface. Kuang described it as a horror story about the publishing industry. As someone close to books, book prizes and book publishing, you might just love it.

And just like that, my TBR list has grown (once again) 😝 great video, Eric ❤❤

Living in Canada I don't see all the books published in Britain so I love to hear about some which are new to me. The book at the end, In Ascension, sounds really good and I have just found that my on-line library has it available. Thanks for some new recommendations.

I really want to read Enter Ghost, had to request my library order it in. Thanks for going through the list for us! Happy Holidays.

Seems like a good list. I have read The Hero of This Book it’s enjoyable and I like McCracken as an author. Kind of a nice tribute, memoir nice type of book. I’d also recommend Bowlaway and Here’s Your Hat What’s Your Hurry.

I’ve read 9 of these but the Claire Kilroy is calling to me. On to my TBR it goes.

I've read 6 and have copies of most of the others (all except Kairos & Caret) ... Hopefully will get to most of them by the end of NEXT year!

I loved your off the cuff definition of science fiction - there’s a spaceship! Although I guess spaceships do exist!

Birnam Wood and Yellowface may make my top 10 reads of the year. I really liked Victory City. I
In Ascension wasn't for me- the science was terrible and I couldn't suspend disbelief, kept hoping it would get better, it didn't.
The Bee Sting also lost me at the Irish binge drinking bit I dnf.
Still on my TBR Cuddy, The Fraud and The Wren, The Wren.
    Terrific video Eric.

Speaking of the Irish....have you ever read any books about Roger Casement who was hing by the Crown?? I think you'd really enjoy his story....Vargas Llosa even wrote a fictional story about Casement's time in Peru.

"In Ascension" is in my top favorite reads of the year. I actually enjoyed "Yellowface" more than I thought I would. It went places I didn't expect it to go, which is alwasy nice as a reader. Still, I don't know if it will make my own persnal top ten, but I think it would make my top twenty easily.

I have heard amazing things about Soldier Sailor but it is not out in the US for several more months. I’ve read many of the remaining books on the list. A few of my favorites of the year are on it, along with a few I really did not like and everything in between. That seems to be how it always goes with lists like these!

Soldier, Sailor has everything. I loved it, though my favorite was Absolutely and Forever. She’s one of my favorite authors. I really liked this list.

I’m in the middle of Old God’s Time and I’m struggling with the subject matter. Not that I only read “rosy” stories, but this is just so unrelentingly bleak.
For Rushdie: Midnight’s Children is an amazing novel; but try Fury or The Golden House too. The latter is a fascinating tale of New York in a trump style world with lots of tweets. It’s not his most well written, but I remember reading it as trump took office and it captured the feel of that time. I thought Fury was brilliant.
I didn’t know Rose Tremain had a new book! Thank you!! I love her books, especially Music & Silence.
I still think The House of Doors was one of the year’s best.
Thank you as always for your videos!!

I feel the same way about Salman Rushdie’s work. I want to like his writing but it just doesn’t stick. Zadie Smith’s writing, however, pulls me in and knocks me out!

Let me join the chorus of people recommending Yellowface. It’s a wonderful takedown of the literary establishment. I’d really like to know if it aligns with what you have observed having rubbed shoulders with people in the industry.

I’ve read 6 on the list. Not all the Irish ones ( I’ll get my Irish passport revoked!). They’re are several I still want to get to. Some are on my wish list. However there are several I’ve not heard of before.
Disappointed that my best book of 2023 is not on the list.

Yellowface was a cringey read for me. I am Asian and I’m not gonna lie, l disliked most of the characters, everyone of them had a chip on their shoulder. 🤷🏻‍♀️
