At 12:30 in the video, you can see two stickers on the bottom right hand side of the rear window. The top sticker says '平成22年度' (Heisei 22 nendo=Financial year of Heisei 22=April 2010 to March 2011) and '燃費+5%達成者' (Nenpi +5% tassei-sha= +5% fuel economy achieved vehicle). The bottom blue oval sticker with 3 gold stars says '低排出ガス者' (Tei-haishutsu gas-sha= Low emissions vehicle) and is a sticker approved by the Minister for Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (lowest line on the sticker). These stickers are important (here in Japan) as they signify approval by the authorities which translate into tax benefits. Fortunately, they have largely dispensed with putting these stickers on cars as consumers did not like all of the government stickers we have to put on. Even our rear number plates have the left screw covered with an aluminium seal to prevent removal of the number plate. Many vehicles imported will likely still have two stickers in the front windscreen. The top left (passenger side) circular sticker is for the legally required vehicle service (not M.O.T.). The centrally placed square sticker is for the 'shaken', which is the M.O.T.. Each sticker has the year in the centre, which is noted in the era of the current emperor. The circular sticker also has 12 months noted around the perimeter with the month in which the service must be conducted highlighted in white. The colour changes with the year. To give my vehicle as an example, my circular sticker has a '5' (Reiwa 5=2023) and the month of May (5) highlighted in white. My vehicle will have its service on the 13th of June and this is not illegal. My square shaken sticker has '5' in the middle denoting May and a smaller '6' (Reiwa 6=2024) in the bottom left, meaning that I must have my shaken in May of next year (2024 or Reiwa 6). The 'shaken' certificate must be kept in the vehicle at all times and it is a traffic offence not to have it in the car. It must typically also be presented when using a car ferry. Japan is very bureaucratic and the government is incredibly analogue. They have recently set-up a 'Digital Agency' which is attempting to digitalise aspects of government. However, the love of paper persists and the new digital shaken certificate launched in January of this year is now downsized from an A4 piece of paper to a slightly smaller than A5 piece of paper with a chip on it and we also get an extra piece of A4 paper to go along with it. This is the Japanese government's idea of digitalisation.
Hi Ian. We chatted at the Bromley Pageant of motoring a couple of years ago. I'm an MOT tester. Every so often DVSA changes the MOT pass/fail criteria and crucially, the wording. I'm sure that they have added a sentence at the end of windscreen damage which says (and I am paraphrasing here), it says 'A crack or damage WHICH OBSCURES THE DRIVERS VIEW OF THE ROAD'. I take this literally and I DO NOT issue a failure if the drivers view of the road is not affected. Testers are still failing vehicles on windscreen damage that should (in my opinion) pass and advise.
Worth watching just to hear Miss HubNut peak the mic into oblivion, and hear your decibel editing to bring the sound back to a reasonable listening level. That’s not a complaint, I love it! Everyone loves a cup holder!
There are unfortunately times you just have to say no... and then regret it!! Would make a great project for Miss Hubnut and one, or both, of the Hubletts... 😜
Love how much you both of you loved this Atrai, if you didn’t already have a Daihatsu that you’ve invested time in it would be perfect. I knew a guy who lived in Japan that had one of these, he’d take his cat to the beach in it.
I now own this amazing little van, which is a great advert for my business, only surface rust and no major issues, hasn't let me down and everyone loves it.
We briefly had a small fleet of these in a pick up configuration as work transport. If we put much more than a couple of heavy tool bags and a large pork pie in the bed the steering became worryingly boat like. If you can try and load up the back with the sort of weight you hope to carry it might give you a better idea if this will suit your needs.
Buy it girl! I loved Carly's reactions to this, you can tell she adores it. Buy it for her Ian! I would love to see it on the fleet, or any kind of campervan also.
It is apparent that if I had had even 10% of the charisma of this Atrai 7, during my youth, my life might have gone down an entirely different path. Crikey. 😊
I would absolutely love to see videos on this, it could be a fantastic addition to the fleet with a lot of longevity of content and fun! I reckon there are one or two others in the fleet that have run their wonderful, but limited course now and this would be a great replacement. Also wonderful to see another car for Miss Hubnut to get super geeky over and potentially consider mini overnight camper vibes
Looked at buying one of these, instead of the Suzuki Carry we bought in the end, but parts availability is diabolical - a lot come with air-con though.
If you take the safety aspect out of the equation like I do with my Fiat Panda then this is a highly practical, efficient good little vehicle that would be a great ownership experience.
It is surely a very cute car, but getting spare parts could be a real challenge. My eye was caught however by the purple Volvo XC70 D5 sitting next to it. Now that's a family car which can tow without effort!
That is a nice little car. Makes me think "Honey, I shrunk the Alphard". But I think you made the right decision turning it down. It's got a few issues, the biggest one being that it's not a Kei truck.
A few seconds after the video has started I thought: this car is bought on first sight. I'm curious how this Daihatsu story is going to end... Hello Happy to everyone!
Awwwwwwww..........I'm so sorry you didn't buy this. It was a lovely shaped car/van. Miss Hubnut liked it! I think you would have too Ian, after a short while. Personally, I like it too. However, I would have liked to see a little Diesel in her!
Time for a crowdfunded, subscriber owned, "Car for the channel". used at the meet-ups for shuttling people about, test drives etc. a couple of quid from 1% of the subscribers should get it on the road. ps. a 1300 can handle bob.
"seems okay" - the Hubnut guarantee of quality right there Actually a decent MOT history and that leaky exhaust has been an advisory since 2020 so no biggie
It's sure car meant for yours family, it's Daihatsu and has space enough (when 3rd row tilted down). Someone seems to be little bit excited... 😄 That's so quirky and cool car, i want one too 😀👍
Looking through the transcript of subtitles cos I could have sworn Ian said it had been in there since 2014?! The auto-generated stuff brought up some gems, though; such as in the introduction “the body’s based on cake” Sounds like the car for me! 😊
Can’t fault you saying not for you. Carly was very nearly in love with it. I can see one in your future. You have plenty of cars too tinker with at present. Thanks for the look round it
The air-con would probably just need re-gassing. In your shoes, I'd be mightily tempted to buy this car. But then, I am very keen indeed on Daihatsus...
Carrying capacity and versatility in relation to external dimensions is probably the best in the world! They fit everything on 376 centimeters. No crumple zone...
Love the Video. I own this car so was curious how and when you will find all of those fancy levers features etc :) Unfortunately you did not manage to find a large trunk version when 3rd row seats goes under middle bench and a cargo version when two back benches become an almost flat platform. Anyway, your reactions makes this film very nice to watch. Greetings from Poland.
How Hubnut is a minidisc player? Carly's magical excitement was like all her childhood Christmasses in one! A shame though you didn't buy it but a sensible conclusion since you have other projects ongoing. Cheers.
Interesting. JDMs are generally well-equipped unless they are the ‘apocalypse’ model. Surface rust would need a bit of work but do-able. Most JDMs don’t have good rust-proofing as I understand they don’t salt the road there. Windscreen is unlikely to be an issue. A replacement ~£150. Many windscreen companies can source these. Give them the reg and get a quote. Can be harder to get the seal kits. These often have to be bought internationally (and these are very good, with great parts info), but not a problem, esp if the MOT has a little way to run. Also being a JDM there’s unlikely to be a GVM on the plate so towing isn’t immediately straightforward. There are a couple of good companies that can fairly cheaply supply a GWM plate for JDMs. Getting a towbar might actually be harder as I think this would have to be type-approved. High clutch might indicate a new one will soon be needed, esp if mileage suggests, too. Working on a mid-engine van isn’t that hard but you generally need bigger jack + stands than for a car.
My sister is only 5ft and in the nineties borrowed her friend’s Suzuki Vitara to move some stuff. Before she always had to have a cushion with her to drive any car. Next day her TR7 was for sale and a new Vitara appeared. She only got rid of it 4yrs ago as it was starting to get tired. She’s since gone with the Ford Kuga (she’s on her 2nd new one ). She absolutely refuses to get a normal car because the high driving position of the Kuga makes it easy for her. I know a few short women (family trait! ) and they all drive SUV/MPVs due to the high driving position . Not saying Carly would find it easier but………………
I like this Daihatsu as much as Miss Hubnet (Carly). I was quite shocked to see that Jeep Patriot right behind it! Quite a few of them on the roads where I live. Someone had one in a similar Colour years ago, to which I believe was in a major accident. Since she is deceased, and I see a Patriot in that very same Colour, I always think of her. And I see the dilemma of having a practical everyday vehicle which can tow Bob when the need arises. I do hope that Daihatsu goes to someone who will give it proper attention!
The car you really want is the maroon Volvo Estate to the left of the Atrai 7. It will haul your family and wheeled camper tent contraption with complete ease !
I would like to see this one in your collection, (if affordable), but it looks to be a joint effort with all your repair contacts to bring back to how it should be. All stay safe and well. Richie
Lovely looking car never seen one before. Miss Hubnut was so edited. Incidentally some one in my home Town has a Daihatsu rather square looking. Near by garage was a dealer also.
I can see Chemmy packing her little red & white spotted hankie on a stick with all her worldly goods inside over her shoulder sadly slowly leaving her home 🥲 kissing Ellie on each cheek as she moves out of sight down the long road ☹️, her days in the Hubnut family numbered 🥲🥲🥲🥲😂.
A hugely charismatic little van! Much though I can see this is very HubNut (and very Miss HubNut) I do rather think the necessary repairs would be a bit beyond you, and would all add up to quite a few quid, sadly. If it were a bigger engine and had a tow bar, then yes. It could replace the Berlingo. But if it doesn't replace the Berlingo, then I'm struggling to see what role it would perform in the fleet.
So the HiJet story is a bit more complicated than that... The vehicle sold in the UK until 2004 as the HiJet wasn't in fact built by Daihatsu - it's a redesign of the early 90s HiJet by Piaggio, re-engined by them and sold as the Porter. Daihatsu, who carried on developing the HiJet in a different direction, ended up selling a rebadged Porter in the UK as a HiJet, whilst simultaneously making and selling the semi-cab development in Japan as the HiJet. So. This Atrai is based on an Extol, which is based on a HiJet, but not the HiJet which was sold in the UK, which was a Porter. Hope that's nice and clear for everyone....
There's a couple of Suzuki Landies for sale at the moment - same size as an Altrai but 4wd - price has put me off but would have loved to say I've got a Landie (typically a Defender) and then turn up in it. Decent MOT history on the Altrai despite the mileage.
Never seen someone so excited by a cup holder . Love it ..
As cup holders go it's a good'un.
Well someone sold millions of records with Muskrat Love, so why not Cup Holder Love.
Its the ideal place to hide a rubber spider!
To be honest i'm all about the cup holder!
You NEED to add that to the fleet. It's gotta happen, it has a minidisc player and it's so rare and just plain awesome!
Have minidiscs, will donate!!!!!! 🎶 💽🔊

Carly's pure joy for this beast is adorable. Hoping you buy it it fits all criteria for a family vehicle
Please, somebody save this thing! It's so coool!
For a Daihatsu of that vintage it's in remarkable condition rust wise!
This needs bought for the fleet, i think Hubnutters/members need to crowd fund this to make a reality come true for Carly.
Carly was properly surprised by that cup holder haha
I totally agree with her, all Daihatsus are awesome!
Miss hubnuts enthusiasm for this is infectious
I don't know if it's a smart purchase, but it is certainly the car you deserve.
Best cup holder reaction ever. Putting it right by an air vent is clever, it means you keep your drink cool using the aircon. Alfa 147 had it.
The excitement is palpable!! 😂
Hi Ian. We chatted at the Bromley Pageant of motoring a couple of years ago. I'm an MOT tester. Every so often DVSA changes the MOT pass/fail criteria and crucially, the wording. How happy can you get from a cup holder, Carly became very enthusiastic.
It's nice that Tanygroes thought of you for this Daihatsu.

Really? This very one? Brilliant. Could you send a pic to ian@hubnut.org please?
I live just outside Glasgow and bought it 2 months ago from a guy in Edinburgh, I have big plans for it.
Back home and off camera Carly inflicts the arm twisting and in future videos a mini camper conversion is to be seen
Buy it girl! I loved Carly's reactions to this, you can tell she adores it. Buy it for her Ian! I would love to see it on the fleet, or any kind of campervan also.
This one made me smile. The utter joy on Carly,s face . Wonderful stuff.
You've got to buy it, Miss Hubnut was almost exploding whilst looking over it,what a cool little thing 😎
I'm not into JDM "vans" as such, but I can very much see the appeal of them. The high pitched squeaking from the passenger seat might need some WD40!😆
Would be great to add that to the fleet. The 2018 MOT advisory is interesting "Wheel Trims Fitted to Offside".
It is apparent that if I had had even 10% of the charisma of this Atrai 7, during my youth, my life might have gone down an entirely different path. Crikey. 😊
Miss Hubnut "I'm trying not to squeak too much" 😂😂
The excitement of Miss Hubnut is so adorable ❤
I would absolutely love to see videos on this, it could be a fantastic addition to the fleet with a lot of longevity of content and fun! I reckon there are one or two others in the fleet that have run their wonderful, but limited course now and this would be a great replacement. I love the colour of that V70 next to it.. ❤ You need a Swedish barge, Ian. I live my car dreams through you... 😂
Memories of when I got my Bongo. Those cup holders though. Awesome.
Looked at buying one of these, instead of the Suzuki Carry we bought in the end, but parts availability is diabolical - a lot come with air-con though.
Same as the Toyota Sparky and Daihatsu Extol - which is the van version.
I love my little Daihatsu Atrai 7 its an automatic and 4x4. Its a lil beast!
The phrase "Oh, Ian" as Ms Hubnut surveyed the second row! What a lovely video. Fingers crossed!
Very well equipped for such a small van.
If you take the safety aspect out of the equation like I do with my Fiat Panda then this is a highly practical, efficient good little vehicle that would be a great ownership experience.
It was the squeak and run, that sold it to me
Proud of both of you for NOT buying this! There's some method left in your madness yet, Ian.
Yes thank God could be just another fleet money pit
Carly's priceless reactions. Make a perfect wedding car for you both. I quite like this mini mpv.
It is surely a very cute car, but getting spare parts could be a real challenge. My eye was caught however by the purple Volvo XC70 D5 sitting next to it. Now that's a family car which can tow without effort!
When Miss Hubnut Saw that Cup holder.
It was Sold..!
If that doesn't end up in the Fleet, I will be Amazed..!
Cheers kim in Oz. 😎
That is a nice little car. Makes me think "Honey, I shrunk the Alphard". But I think you made the right decision turning it down. It's got a few issues, the biggest one being that it's not a Kei truck.
Ok I am Amazed..!
Dont think miss Hubnut, won't be wanting one in the Future.
That Cup Holder moment was Gold..!
😂
A few seconds after the video has started I thought: this car is bought on first sight. I'm curious how this Daihatsu story is going to end... Hello Happy to everyone!
I would have a serious look at the lovely Volvo next to it.
I didn't even notice that until I was editing!
That's quite a funky little runabout, definitely wants saving, even the engine access didn't look as horrific as I thought it might 👍
Awwwwwwww..........I'm so sorry you didn't buy this. It was a lovely shaped car/van. Miss Hubnut liked it! I think you would have too Ian, after a short while. Personally, I like it too. However, I would have liked to see a little Diesel in her!
Miss Hubnut so excited at the beginning. Will you find another? I think you will come to regret not buying this!
Time for a crowdfunded, subscriber owned, "Car for the channel". used at the meet-ups for shuttling people about, test drives etc. a couple of quid from 1% of the subscribers should get it on the road.
ps. a 1300 can handle bob.
Lovely they let you use that kettle again! From the defrosting screen vid! Miss hubnut was so excited! Cheers
I'm not normally interested in this sort of thing but this has character. Should have bought it!
It's the gift that keeps on giving.
interesting little van. I really thought you would have bought it/saved it. I hope someone does.
Someone has I think.
"seems okay" - the Hubnut guarantee of quality right there
Actually a decent MOT history and that leaky exhaust has been an advisory since 2020 so no biggie
What an unusual car. Clearly Mrs Hub is in love with it.
It's sure car meant for yours family, it's Daihatsu and has space enough (when 3rd row tilted down).
Someone seems to be little bit excited... 😄
That's so quirky and cool car, i want one too 😀👍
Looking through the transcript of subtitles cos I could have sworn Ian said it had been in there since 2014?!
The auto-generated stuff brought up some gems, though; such as in the introduction “the body’s based on cake” Sounds like the car for me! 😊
That's what I thought he said but if they had left a car in a field on the Welsh coast for 10 years . . . !
Just remembered he said it had a current MOT so obviously hasn't been rusting in a field for a decade.
I meant that's how long it has been in the UK. Brainfart...
Why is there a quiet voice in the back of my mind whispering "early Christmas present for Ms. Hubnut" ???? 😄😄
Perfect car for Carly to learn and use instead of Chemmy, can you imagine the view from those high seats.
Can’t fault you saying not for you. Carly was very nearly in love with it. I can see one in your future. You have plenty of cars too tinker with at present. Thanks for the look round it
Pure happiness over a car is something to treasure.
The cup holder reaction alone is enough to justify adding it to the fleet!!
Oooh so cool I'm with Carly on this one I love it.
The air-con would probably just need re-gassing. In your shoes, I'd be mightily tempted to buy this car. But then, I am very keen indeed on Daihatsus...
Excellent choice of cars to love
That definitely would be a perfect addition to the fleet
its perfect I like it a lot, this is the sort of car that goes up in value
I love these little mpvs. Toyota did a badge engendered one called the Sparky. I might actually get to buy one one day.
Carrying capacity and versatility in relation to external dimensions is probably the best in the world! They fit everything on 376 centimeters. No crumple zone...
I saw a pickup version of this in the UK recently, I got a tad excited also. My family thought I was nuts.
The back row seat on mine went under the middle row which was very useful.
Ms. Hubnut knows more about Daihatsu than Mr. Hubnut himself!
Cheers.
Looking forward to watching this either way. Love the look of these little vans 😁
Interesting. JDMs are generally well-equipped unless they are the ‘apocalypse’ model. Surface rust would need a bit of work but do-able. Perfect for miss Hubnut, fantastic, confidence inspiring driving position😀👍
That is true. We did try the position for size...
The car you really want is the maroon Volvo Estate to the left of the Atrai 7. It will haul your family and wheeled camper tent contraption with complete ease !
Unless the gearbox is shagged. Which they usually are...
Yes, it is important to fully consider the pros and cons before you buy it anyway.
I would like to see this one in your collection, (if affordable), but it looks to be a joint effort with all your repair contacts to bring back to how it should be. All stay safe and well. Richie
Well, it's not bright pink with green fur and stacks, and it actually has a working drivetrain, so it's got that going for it at least... :P
Ian was like Jim Bowan from bullseye in this video, look Carly this is what we could have bought 😂 she did well to hide her disappointment.
Never!! We just need to have Dau Daihatsu 😉
Little kid in a sweet shop. I got a feeling Miss Hubnut likes.
Aha! I was right, it's another Daihatsu! ♥
Ha you knew right away!!! Isn't she lovely???
@@misshubnut Absolute beauty!
Stop putting money into the Berlingo and buy this instead 👍
Happy wife = Happy life!
A definite Berlingo replacement, would easily tow Bob,and so much more practical,go on !!
That would struggle to tow Bob with the whole family on board, that’s if a tow bar is available for it😊
18:07 Looked at these before I bought my Suzuki Carry, as many of them come with a/c. It was only parts availability that put me off in the end.
So the HiJet story is a bit more complicated than that... So. This Atrai is based on an Extol, which is based on a HiJet, but not the HiJet which was sold in the UK, which was a Porter. Hope that's nice and clear for everyone....
What a beautiful and rare find! :) P.S.: DO NOT let your wife play Poker! Like, ever! ;)
Cup holder heaven. Magnificent!
Awwww, after Miss Hubnut's squeak of joy I thought "they can't possibly NOT buy it"...
get it bought that thing is so cool and the rust isnt that major.
Go buy that car! Meanwhile I can't take my eyes off that gorgeous V70/XC70 parked next to it, what a pretty colour
Absaloutly brilliant video Ian miss hubnut ❤👍 what a lovely vehicle what a shame no one wants it brilliant
There's a couple of Suzuki Landies for sale at the moment - same size as an Altrai but 4wd - price has put me off but would have loved to say I've got a Landie (typically a Defender) and then turn up in it. Decent MOT history on the Altrai despite the mileage.
Its a little beauty ... got to be added to the fleet ... 👍
