Thank you for your lovely instructional style. It's a pleasure watching you work. I'm not an artist, I clicked out of curiosity and I'm very glad I did. I only wanted to share that I loved the piece before it was cut🙈, even the extra quiet spaces 😄.
Great video! It was Bob Burridge who made that suggestion about mat cutters….buy one, give it to your worst enemy, then go get yours cut professionally!!! When I heard him say that, I immediately knew that was the right advice for me! 😂
This is so helpful, Alison. Thank you. Loved hearing your composition comments, but the framing discussion was invaluable. I have several sizes standard mats, but wasn't sure how to mark the size on the painting. Now I will cut my mats sizes to help with marking.
here is the link to the great articles on composition I mention in this video:www.smashingmagazine.com/2014/12/design-principles-visual-weight-direction/?fbclid=IwAR0z93DMRenUOYPRmSgX8FNk83IymYy4Wfz4p3Dn-S5yn0_d9yuhens5u4M
I must say that I loved the piece just as it was, so there´s obviously a market for ´´non-cohesive´´pieces lol. I do tend to like different artists´ pieces before they are ´finished´; I often think oh that´s lovely, then aargh, they´ve spolit it now! Horses for courses 🙂
Great video. Have just begun to do this with my paper pieces. I did have a bit of a problem with very heavy watercolour paper being almost too stiff to adhere using gel medium…had to use some clamps around the edges. I will use light paper going forward.
oh-that's a big question ;) painting out is the best strategy--you can start with thin layers,--Zinc white can be helpful for this. You can always glaze it later if you find it too white.
Allison thank so much for this video. I have a question : I can not find Welbond where I live. What should I look for as an alternative? A woos glue or a paper glue? I know you mentioned mat medium bit I really must say on budget.
I find when I make my marks and varnish at the end ,some of them bleed up from under the acrylic paint and can ruin the painting. What do you do so that you can make marks with oil pastel , pencil, cray Paz etc and be able to seal the marks? Thank you ,I just found your channel and am enjoying your videos very much!
Loved your video, Alison! It is just what I needed to learn. I really appreciate all the information you share with us. I have a question-what type/brand of acrylic medium will you use to finish it? Thank you so much.
I usually cover the whole thing with a gloss medium. I can leave it at that, or add a layer of acrylic varnish if I plan on selling it or want it to be gallery ready.
Thank you Alison for your time and expertise, l really enjoy watching and listening to you. Lots of helpful hints and tips.......Alioban

you are welcome!
I've only started to do this process to my peices. Its freeing and magical.

fantastic info ty.

That's interesting Sue. I would have thought that the stiffer the paper, the easier it would be to mount on wood. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Great info! Do you have videos on quieting down a busy painting?
oh-that's a big question ;) painting out is the best strategy--you can start with thin layers,--Zinc white can be helpful for this. You can always glaze it later if you find it too white.
Allison thank so much for this video. I have a question : I can not find Welbond where I live. What should I look for as an alternative? A woos glue or a paper glue? I know you mentioned mat medium bit I really must say on budget.
any white glue (ie Lepage's) will do--they are all strong and archival.

Hi--try using permanent media and oil sticks rather than oil pastels.
Question, when you put a mat around your paper painting you put it under glass? Great video!!
yes, that is for under glass
Loved your video, Alison! It is just what I needed to learn. I really appreciate all the information you share with us.

@@alisonwatt8570 Thank you for replying to my question. I am SO glad to have found your channel. I am learning so much from you. ♥️
Great video. Why do you prefer weldbond to gel medium for mounting on wood panels?
Gel medium also works well too. White glue is cheaper.
