Thanks for the tutorial! I was wondering though, why did you choose a variable bit rate in the first example and a constant one in the second? How does a variable and constant bit rate compare to each other in terms of sound quality?
I used VBR for one and CBR for the other just to give examples of each. For VBR the higher the value (up to 9) the worse your audio will sound. With CBR the higher the value (up to 320K) the better it will sound. If for example you were going to trans-code some audio to two mp3 test files.The first test file was VBR of 3 and the second test file you used a CBR of 192K. You should end up with two files that would sound exactly the same but the VBR file should have a smaller file size as a VBR of 3 will allow the bit rate to swing between 150k and 195k. So for parts of your input audio that don't have a lot going on the libmp3lame encoder can reduce the bitrate and then swing back up to a higher bitrate for more complex audio in your input file.
