Considering all of the Fighters' callsigns (Wizard, Wyvern, Priest) are somewhat fantasy related, it might be a combination of DND References.

@@iznogood4895 I think the only mistake they made here was that the controller, instead of saying 'merged' said 'almost same position, same altitude'. But it's still so fucking good, one of the best scenes in anime and film history overall.
