the kids have the agility and dexterity to ramp up the speed for sure, but it will still take years of life experiences for them to inject true emotion into their playing - that's when the music really begins to have the depth to be great! i love the fact that there are young people who appreciate this style of music enough to study, practice, and play this well --- so they can carry on our traditions and heritage!!!
Mark has not seemed to stop advancing in his fiddle playing as past masters have. He keeps coming up with innovative ideas (I don't know what else to call it) for all aspects of his music. His abilities and his music are ever expanding. He constantly evolves. It's like he just never reaches the pinnacle. We don't even know where the pinnacle is. He is an amazing musician. And he seems to be an exemplary human being, as well. I am glad he is with us. I hope to see more from him.
Mark was a trail blazer. These newer young talents have benefited from his example set years before. He could give them a run for their money..depending on who the judges were. . and .I would hate to try to judge them.
mark O'Connor humble nature means he would be happy to be present and experience greatness in the art music, the fact this could be at the hands of someone other than him is not relevant, the man just exudes enjoyment when playing with others, what a legend
To my ear, Kimber had the best tone of the three but where Mark always shines through best is in his phrasing...his transitions are always so smooth and effortless.
I like 2 think of this abundant. Overflowing talent musically speaking as a great bountiful harvest of that which is nature and man at its apex. Of. Our extant civilization
This is accompaniment section is every contest player’s worst nightmare. No matter how fast you play to keep up with their rushing, they continue to push. You can see it happening with all three
I actually think Mark would have a difficult time winning today, because he's been away from competing for over 30 years. One reason he stopped winning competitions is he started doing things in his playing that weren't appreciated by the judges, mixing in elements from other genres. In order to win he'd have to think like a festival fiddle competitor rather than an artist. I'm sure he could do that if he decided to, but to go right from Mark O'Connor the recording artist/performer to contest #41 or whatever would be a challenge.
As a child he could still beat any of them. To be a great musician you need to express the emotion and that is lacking here, they are excellent but should not be encouraged to think they are great.
Absolutely yes,mark could win today....there's always 'light ' between his notes...expression ❤
Most excellent Berklee students with amazing solos. Mr. O'Connor is the absolute master! Just stunning to hear him always.

Makes me want to put my Pickin' in the Wind album on the turntable. I've owned it for 43 years and it never gets old.

Just one listen to his solo will tell you he is still by far the best .

That and he can play any genre and be on the the top of the pile in that group of fiddlers. Or guitarists, or mandolin players or kazoo artists, etc.
Great upcoming talents. I wish, they too grow up with the gamut of performing/participating experiences that Mark had.
The sound of joy itself...

Yes he could ... he has the sweet tone that only the late Stéphane Grappelli can match.
All three were great but... O'Connors tone was a completely different animal when he stepped up.

Awesome !!!
"Step aside, kids: let me show you how it's done."

Mark O'Connor can pull a bow across the fiddle better than anyone
gorgeous!!!!!!!
C'mon - not even a fair contest...
Like Ric Flair says, until you beat the man, you can't be the man...WHOOOOO!!!!
All 3 owned a moment, really.
I think without a doubt.
