  • On February 29, Leap Year Day, I went to what once was the town of Billmeyer, now abandoned for over 60 years. In this video you’ll see a lot of ruins, foundations, wherevthe quarry was, what’s left of an old car, and the White Cliffs of Canoy that was man-made created by industrial waste from the quarry. I used the All Trails app which put me on the River Trail that was once Main Street that went through the town.
It was a chilly, but beautiful day. What a thrill it was to see what was once the town of Billmeyer, which is now a ghost town.
I hope that you enjoy the vlog and find it interesting. Please like, share and subscribe✌️

Love it! Towns based on mineral are always cool to explore because when the mineral runs out, the people just leave and the buildings remain! Keep em coming, Pete!

Looks like you're doing well hiking the trail! Interesting ruins along the way (especially the car), and those white cliffs are fascinating! I agree that the views from atop the cliffs are gorgeous! Enjoyable vlog!

I’m getting there slowly, but I’m not letting it stop me from doing what I love to do. Seeing everything at Billmeyer was uplifting and good medicine for me. I’m glad that you enjoyed the vlog. Thank you, Jean!✌️

Ive walked that path a few times to the white cliffs, and never knew that it used be a town there, very cool history. I never went pass the cliffs i may have to venture back that way to see the rest especially the car

Check it out sometime, you won’t be disappointed. Make sure you wander near the river once you go past the cliffs. You see a lot of foundation along with that car. That was cool to see.. Thanks, Jay✌️

That structure at 6:51 is the base of an old railroad coaling tower for steam engines. They would pull underneath it and a shoot would drop down to fill the coal car.

Well, babies were still being born there as recently as 1936. I haven't finished viewing all of the video yet, but I paused it to see if there was a Wikipedia entry for Billmeyer, and there was one:
Robert Willie White (November 19, 1936 - October 27, 1994) was an American soul musician and a guitarist for Motown's in-house studio band, the Funk Brothers. Born in the small town of Billmeyer, Pennsylvania

Pete, this is my old stomping grounds. At the beginning you were in the old canal they used before the railroad was a thing. I caught my 1st walleye at the mouth of Canoy Creek where you crossed the bridge. I have VHS video inside the steel buildings before they were ripped from those concrete foundations. Google 'Abandoned Billmeyer' to see images of what we played hooky in. Thanks for the memories. Edit: The structure with the "smokestack" near the end is a solid waste incinerator, not part of Billmeyer.

That’s so cool that this was your old stomping grounds, how long ago was that. Also, that’s awesome that you have some footage of being inside some of the buildings, you should get that transferred to digital, possibly even post it on your channel. Thanks for commenting and sharing your experience being at Billmeyer, so appreciate it!!✌️

@@beatlepete Mid '70s into the '80s. The footage is from the '90s when I showed my son around when he was a kid. We had to walk the tracks then because there was no paved rail trail. We even rode dirt bikes on the "white cliff" material. One old man from Bainbridge, Ponnie Kinsey, would check on the place from time to time and chase you off if he found you there. We would swim in the quarry before the scuba club took over.

@@G8rquest I would like to see that footage you have, let me know if you ever post it. That man that used to chase you, was he from Bainbridge Navel Academy in Port Deposit? That’s where I live and some of those structures are still there, it closed in 1976. Anyway, glad you never got caught by him. Thats pretty cool that you used to swim in the quarry. I’d like to go back and do some more exploring. As far as you know, was there anything I missed? Thanks again for sharing commenting and sharing your story, much appreciated ✌️

@@beatlepete I appreciate your encouragement to transfer the video. I'll see what I can do. The old man was from Bainbridge PA, just up the river from Billmeyer. I never got caught but laid low a few times when he drove by. Most of the really cool stuff, buildings and machine shop, was removed as scrap before the rail trail was put in.
