Just got my first ps2 this year and I have to say it's a great system, bought it instead of a PS5! To have fully fleshed out games with no updates or add on content - just everything on the disk is a breath of fresh air comming from modern gaming. I was suprised to find most dual shock 2 controllers seem to be dead and not working, but after replacing the button contact ribbon cables I now have 4 Excellent controller's to use! Probably due to being in the UK - I also have the RGB scart cable also.

I recently got a brook controller adapter that allows me to use a PS5 controller for PS1 and PS2. Works great and if there is any lag, I cant detect it. Great Video
Great video! I'd say the best PS2 controller is a DualShock 3 using a Brook adapter. It works flawlessly, no lag and the DS3 has all of the DS2 functionality! (all analog buttons)
One thing that has rekindled my interest in collecting for PS2/PS1 is just how easy it is to region unlock a PS2 now with MechaPwn. Now I can play all those Japanese PS1/PS2 games I always wanted, and I didn't need to crack open the console.
The thing about collecting Greatest Hits (aka the Platinum collection, here in the U.K.) is that it’s basically a collared subset of really enjoyable games.
Respect for giving love to Champions of Norrath! That's my fav game because of the lore, environments, & customizability! also it has a random dungeon generator that keeps each playthrough unique!
another great video! ive been collecting for the PS2 since i first got my phat i got off my cousin back in 2002. I had issues with one but then got a 2nd one that ive had since 2003 and still have it today. Definately a great system to pick up for as i recenly picked up a really good working slim model. when it comes to controllers i have 2 OG's and i had a madcatz wireless controller thar FINALLY crapped out on me last year but surprisingly lasted me more then 15-20 years., but i also have an adapter i bought off amazon so you can use your ps4/xbox one/nintendo switch pro controller and i use that if i want to go the wireless route. The current games im collecting and still trying to collect for is the compliations and a few fighting games here and there.
I know one for PS2 is in development, but the MemCard Pro for PS1 is an ideal solution- no more need for multiple memory cards, and it makes your save files much more easily transferred to PC for more permanent storage.
Thanks for these videos. Slowly but surely building up my entire collection, but it's incredibly hard to keep track of all the modern benefits to collecting older consoles. You never know what small things may have eluded you. Things like Stoneagegamer are a HUGE tip. Appreciate the info!
If you have lots of space to fill and love shovel-ware..... I think my biggest surprise when I started collecting PS2 was all the fighting games. There are several King of Fighters games, several Guilty Gears, several Mortal Kombats, and of course Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Capcom vs. SNK 2, and a buttload of 3d fighters. There aren't a lot of traditional shooters but Gradius 3&4 (one game) and Gradius 5 are great.
RUclips has videos on how to resurface your own CD's. I bought a loose copy of Marvel vs Capcom 2 with tons of scratches for about 40 bucks, game would not boot up in my console. After doing my own resurfacing the game now boots up every single time. 👍👍👍
San andreas and GoW 1-2 and guitar hero are some of my favorite games of all time. Im an xbox boy but recently bought a PS2 and i been just collecting all the games from my childhood. PS2 was a goated console.
I have both the Defender and the Logitech, I like the feel of the new Defender over the (getting expensive) Logitech. One cool thing you can do with your PS1 saves is back them up (copy to) your PS2 mem card, though you can't use them from there, you can move them over for later use.
Glad i found a video like this. I just got my ps2 last week. You’re video has been very helpful. Thank you for this. Cause i always wanted to get myself into early 2000s gaming and retro
I recognized that Gran Turismo 3 sitting there right away, one of my favorite games of all time. That Logitech wireless controller you mentioned is absolutely fantastic still, but getting very expensive. Similar deal to Wavebirds.
The Logitech wireless controller for the PS2 and OG Xbox was quality. My bro-in-law had one many years ago for the original Xbox and it was super nice.
Worth pointing out that if you want original controllers, then be aware you'll probably have to replace the flex board, as the material Sony used is now succumbing to oxidization. Also, avoid the H controllers. From what I've heard and sadly experienced, those are the most likely to die over time.
Still got my fat console from when was 15 ish, I'm 40 now, great condition has logitec screen and massive carry case too, kids off school for Easter today so he going take over my house so digging this out tonight lol
One cool thing about PS2 memory cards you can't actually save your PS1 game files to them but you can store PS1 game data on your PS2 memory memory card it just has to be copied from a PS1. That's what I do with all the extra PS1 game data that I'm not using at the time I just stored on my PS2 memory cards. I actually have a third-party PS1 memory card that I got about twenty-two years ago and it's still working.
One tip that you didn't mention in testing the console. Is to test a DVD movie, a blue disc PS2 game as well as a silver DVD PS2 game. Not all PS1 games will play on the PS2 console and different models also won't play certain games. I used an S-Video cord for my PS2 console and I used a Game Shark memory card that I believe was 256mb but you could also compress the save files so they take up 1/5 the actual file size. As for the full backwards compatible Phat PS3 console. The 4OGB unit did not have PS2 backwards compatibility.
99.9 percent of the PS1 games do play, only a handful don’t. Yeah, there was a 60 GB PS3 that was partially compatible with software. Got that one mixed up with the 40GB.
@@johnhancockretro There is more than a handful. All depending what you consider a handful. If you consider 44 games a handful. Then the various models have issues with another close 150 games plus those 44 initial games so nearly 200.
Om ordering that controller from retro fighters today lol. I also used the Logitech and loved it. I've never had any bad experiences with third party mem cards, I do typically go first part nuy never had a problem. Great video dude
I don't quite understand the disdain for greatest hits anymore. I used to see it but the fascination is in the software and not the casing. As for memory cards, I go with 1st party. Ps1 3rd party cards burned me as a kid so I'm just scarred lol I'll Def have to check out that retrofighter controller. Looks slick!

Here in indianapolis IN we have a set of stores called disc replay. They sell used games and dvds and they resurface everything before it goes out the door. And if it still looks nasty they wont even sell it to you.
I find the PS2 to be really reliable. I’ve been buying people’s systems for years. Last week I realized I have 15 PS2 systems. It’s a good time to sell them.
I have a third-party memory card that has 128MB rather than the standard 8MB. Saving directly to that card does not work, but I can save to an official Sony Memory Card and then copy the files over. I do that when my standard memory card is full so I keep the 128MB one in Slot B. I have read online that Memory Cards that don't say "MagicGate" on them behave like this. Finally having gone through my backlog on older systems, I am stoked to delve into my PS2 backlog really soon. Might end up playing it all of April until the new Zelda is released in May.
I love PS2 it has so many favourite fighting games at first I have slim PS2 I collect my favourite games I recently bought fat PS2 to play games from hard drive
Cool...I still have my original, got it at launch day.. picked it up at Game u.k ...Great memories... My favourite game on the system is ICO . All physical games and no digital downloads...
The Logitech controllers have been the best replacements for me. Everything else I have tried has been a dismal disappointment. Thank you for another great video Mr. H. Does anyone have any recommendations as far as good PS2 replacement controllers?
My suggestion would be to pick up one or two of the brook wingman PS2 adapters and use pretty much any controller with it. Dualshock 3 will let you keep the pressure sensitive buttons like the dualshock 2, though my preferred controller with it has been the dualshock 4. It's a great pickup if you're wanting to use new, OEM controllers (wirelessly) or if you have various other controllers around for other systems.
Buy an ESP32 micro controller very cheap from Aliexpress and build yourself a bluetooth receiver that accepts almost any bluetooth controller. My recommendation is the Dualshock 3. Again, the ESP32 is very cheap and you'll have around a micro controller to play and create a huge number of contraptions.
I started collecting my old PS2 games even though I don’t play them. My ps2 is just on display on my shelf. I prefer my ps5 even though I love the og fat ps2.
I own 4 fully working fat PS2's. One is in a blue shell and one in a grey shell, the other 2 are just the normal black ones. But, since Emulation, I have not used them for well over a year. The reason I got them was because none of them worked at the time and I just used them for practice in repairs. Also, one was a 110v American edition, where I just swapped out the internal power supply for the 240v one we use in the UK. They all contain a 128gb ssd full of games (via a Chinese version of the Sony Ethernet Adapter.) I also own 5 PS 2 memory cards all with Free McBoot on them and 30 other PS 2 memory cards of various capacity sizes including 4 128mb ones.! (Very much overkill, but hey, what can you do?) But as I said I get more enjoyment from the PS 2 PCSX2 emulator at the moment than from the original hardware. Maybe when I get a new monitor for my PC I will hook up a PS 2 to my TV I am using now on my PC. Having only one monitor really sucks! Anyway, thanks John for showing off these games. They all look amazing and well worth playing. I will definitely seek them out.
My experience with memory cards is that I have has 1st party and 3rd party memory cards both get corrupted. For controllers, I like using the original PS2 controller, but I have 2 that don't work well. One of them the shoulder buttons don't work anymore. The other one has analogue drift. So now I'm using a dreamgear wireless. It's okay. The shape isn't great. I like using the original because it feels right in my hands.
I have 2 64MB cheap memory cards from Ebay. I used only one of them and after a couple of saves it was still not showing the towers on startup, so I formated it with a FMCB installer. And it worked well, untill couple days ago.. My friends came and one of them picked up my memeory card with all of my save files, and he dropped it on the floor. I thought it was nothing and I put it back in, but when I turned the console on, it didn't show the towers on startup.... The card is not working anymore, and I lost all of my save files, so I don't recommend 3rd party cards IF you dont have backups.
Thanks, I'll check out the Defender controller. I don't play my older systems much but would like to have them playable. The original psx controllers are great, but seems every dualshock or dualshock 2 I have has floppy sticks.
This is not a shot against you John... BUT!!! I've seen a massive ton of videos for the last 17 years about collecting games... but almost none of you guys mention that the "PLATINUM/GREATEST HITS" often has updatet versions of the game with bug fixes and so on... I mean, I wan't my FF7 black box copy, but I will never think that is the best version of the game...
Word of warning the PS2 might only accept official PS1 memory cards when playing PS1 games. I have a 3rd party PS1 card that works fine on the PS1, but not the PS2 when playing PS1 games. While my official PS1 card works fine on both. So for PS1 games stick to Sony cards.
I only collect rare PS2 games only every game on my list is super rare 44 games so far. BLACK (PS2) Capcom Classic Collection vol.1 (PS2) Capcom Classic Collection vol.2 (PS2) Crash Bandicoot 2 Cortex Strikes Back (PS1) Devil May Cry 1 2 and 3 (PS2) Dynasty Warriors 4 (PS2) ESPN College hoops 2K5 (PS2) ESPN NFL 2K5 (PS2) Fight Night 2004 (PS2) Fight Night Round 2 (PS2) God Of War (PS2) God Of War II (PS2) Grand Theft Auto III (PS2) Grand Theft Auto Vice City (PS2) Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (PS2) HitMan Blood Money (PS2) HitMan 2 Silent Assassin (PS2) Jet LI RISE TO HONOR (PS2) MADDEN 07 (PS2) Mercenaries (PS2) Marvel V.S. Capcom Clash Of Superheroes (PS1) Naruto Ultimate Ninja (PS2) Naruto Ultimate Ninja 2 (PS2) Naruto Ultimate Ninja 3 (PS2) NBA LIVE 04 (PS2) NBA LIVE 05 (PS2) NCAA FOOTBALL 06 (PS2) NCAA FOOTBALL 07 (PS2) NCAA FOOTBALL 08 (PS2) NCAA FOOTBALL 09 (PS2) NCAA FOOTBALL 10 (PS2) NCAA FOOTBALL 11 (PS2) Scarface The World Is Yours (PS2) Smackdown Here Comes The Pain (PS2) Smackdown V.S. IMO Maximo sucks and is one of my worst games on the PS2. It was one of the few that I returned twice. I gave it a second try years later and still hated it.
That's not true, it's possible to save PS1 games on PS2 but consumes much more space. First is needed to create virtual PS1 card or it works only in Europe or on chip/mode console like any here in Serbia. Stick with original hardware or you will always had some issues. 'Gran Turismo 4', 'Crash Bandicoot', 'Sniper Elite', 'Hitman', 'Quake III', etc.... One more thing, There is device that polish CD/DVD/BRD and removes scratches, I saw it once here and still sorry that didn't bought it, probably is possible to find it in US market... ;-)
Great stuff, John. One of my favorite systems of all time. I must have sold a hundred of these when I worked at Software Etc. Thanks for the video!

PS2 Big Step Up From PS1 Great Times In The 80s 90s And 00s
I will definitely seek them out.
i had one of the madcatz memory cards and had zero issues
That defender controller looks gorgeous
That hyperkin cable was awful with my TV. The screen kept turning light blue and so dark it was hard to see.
Ps2 is my fav console
My favourite PS2 games are Raiden 3, R-Type Final, and Gradius V
Space shooters FTW
My experience with memory cards is that I have has 1st party and 3rd party memory cards both get corrupted. For controllers, I like using the original PS2 controller, but I have 2 that don't work well. One of them the shoulder buttons don't work anymore. The other one has analogue drift. So now I'm using a dreamgear wireless. It's okay. The shape isn't great. I like using the original because it feels right in my hands.
My favorite PS1 game Die Hard Trilogy
The original psx controllers are great, but seems every dualshock or dualshock 2 I have has floppy sticks.
for wrestling fans i recommend fire pro wrestling returns. I got mine used for 16$ canadian.
Thanks for posting. I have an original ps2 I purchased back in early 2000's (working condition). What is this worth in your opinion?
Great video thanks. What headset would you recommend? I play on my flat screen in my living room and don't want to wake the family.
Instead of John “The immortal” Hancock, you should call yourself John “The Forever Man” Hancock.
*legendary.*
i still have my ps2 I also have ps3 and psp the ps2 is my favorite
Love the ps2 have a new one in box and let of games
Do PS4 and PS5 not take PS2 discs? I mean you can pop an original copy of star wars Kotor into a series x and play it.
Nope they do not. Xbox series x only plays a small portion of the Xbox library, but at they offer that.
@@johnhancockretro I'm playing morrowind in 4k at 120fps from my original disc .. huge W for Xbox.

You got sniped
my favorite game on ps2 is gran turismo 4
Yup GT 3 & 4 on PS2 sure are great, i'm more of a Burnout guy though !
Watch the video and I recommend them ;). Also do other videos sharing my greatest hits of Sega, Xbox, PS1, N64, and more subsets :).

How do you tell if a game is a first print? Thanks.
I don't have an answer to that question. A PlayStation forum might have an answer to that.
Does anybody collect but not play old school ps2 and OG Xbox games?
Best system ,tokyo xtreme racer zero best game
PS2 Memory Cards. Stock up on PS2 Memory Cards because you are going to need them.
Collecting tips for ps2. Buy more ps2 stuff. You're welcome!
do you believe in cd ROT?
Yes
Is it something that’s gonna happen to all cd base games?
I still have cds from 1985 that look perfect@@Slammer661
My ps2 and every other console I own will be buried in the backyard with me.
IMO Maximo sucks and is one of my worst games on the PS2. It was one of the few that I returned twice. I gave it a second try years later and still hated it.
I actually never owned a ps2
It's time !
One more thing, There is device that polish CD/DVD/BRD and removes scratches, I saw it once here and still sorry that didn't bought it, probably is possible to find it in US market... ;-)
I need that disc polishing device ,Greets from UK
