Thank you for this video. Minute taking has been a nightmare for me. I'm glad you mentioned that it is the chair person that is responsible for summarising the points at the end of the meeting. Egos are involved with summarising a meeting?? The minutes are a legal document - there is no place for egos. I wish I had a chairperson that supported me during meetings instead of ignoring me, I'm not allowed to speak, no agenda, no preparation, people coming in and out of the room during the meeting. I've never had a good experience with minute taking because I have never felt supported. I used to put 'It was discussed that.....' and even that was wrong.....I now feel that when I am asked to minute meetings I can be confident of my role and the chair persons role.
I have just become Vice-chair of a hobby-related social club and due to the vacancy of a Secretary at present, I am sure I will be asked to take minutes at Committee Meetings and General Meetings until we find a Secretary. This video has helped me to understand what will be expected from the minutes and how to record them. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I am very grateful.
I'm an administrative assistant so this is difficult for me because I'm not in the actual business field of my coworkers and many times can't make the distinction of what is important and what is not. I have to discreetly record all meetings, transcribe word for word which takes an lengthy amount of time and try my best to separate the pertinent. This is the only way I can complete this task unfortunately.
I did my first meeting minutes the other day. I was totally lost half way through. I recorded it so had this to help when typing it up. No idea if it was any good waiting to get feedback. I liked this video.
I think that’s what’s so helpful about her recommendations. Asking the chair or head of the meeting to summarize will take the guess work out of what you should record. I imagine that you will be able to summarize some things eventually as you become more familiar with the business. Also, practicing her Dart method creates an overall understanding of who’s responsible for the action, and the expected time of delivery. She didn’t mention doing this, but I’ve found it helpful to use a Google doc to record the minutes, and project the doc throughout the meeting. People can then add their own comments to the doc, you can also assign items to people within the doc (helpful if they’re not in the meeting), and use the same doc as a running track sheet for building the agenda for the next meeting.
Thank you so much for your post. My new PA job entails minute taking for 6 departments and tomorrow is my first time believe it or not and I'm really worried but less so now. You're a very good educator. Thanks again 😊
Love the "LAW" framework! Just tried it in a Zoom call and took notes with tl;dv for Zoom. The notes were directly linked to the meeting recording - particularly handy for the analysis afterwards. Felt it made it even more of a breeze
The best minute taking advice video. Thank you. Now I know what has been the problem. The chairperson not doing there part. Will tactfully suggest. Thanks again
So glad I found your video. Really helpful - I'm definitely a reactive minute taker but ready to get better. I'm definitely going to take the LAW and DART techniques to my next meeting. Thank you for posting this!
I have zero experience in minute taking and as someone who has been a Business Support Officer for the council, I never had the chance to do so and for future roles this is something I lack
I take minutes for a multi billion dollar company…. It’s horrendous! If the meeting is in the morning, the rest of my day is taken up correcting the minutes and writing out in a logical way. There has to be a better way!

@@growqueen And I use 2 recording devices in case one fails to record! That has happened once which was so nerve wracking. Better to have a back up.
