Very proud to be Welsh and an avid gardener. You have been an inspiration to people around the world and it’s great that you and Huw Richards are flying the flag for Wales on RUclips.
Thanks very much and glad your enjoying the content
Hi Tony, I have 30 30L pots its my 3rd year growing this way, what a difference, wish I done it years ago, no slug damage and very clean when tipped into wheelbarrow, great video 👍Steve Colwell
Thanks Steve. such a great way to grow mate
I'm a container gardener-- thank you!!
You are so welcome!
I want to thank you for your potato knowledge!! I have only grown 2 years so far, and I can't wait for this year!!❤ May God bless you and your family. 🙏❤
You are so welcome
Good tips Tony . Container gardening is a whole new way of food growing .
The best method there is thanks Tony (and Dan) for the idea years ago
You bet such a great way to grow
I can't wait for the database you spoke of to be available. It will answer ALL of my questions about potatoes in one place. Splendid! Thanks so much...
Very soon!
The more I see systems like this, the more I'm inclined to grow everything in containers instead of in the ground or raised beds. Even for tomatoes, peppers, and beans and other stuff. It's just so much simpler and easier on the spine. Just plant the seedlings in the pots in the greenhouse, and drag them out the moment the weather is agreeable to that specific plant. At the end of the harvest, just dump the buckets, add some compost, and put it right back in the buckets for the next batch.
Yeah it really does save the back
I've grown spuds in containers for years and if some folks on here think it's easier to dig trenches and then dig the spuds up, you don't know what you're missing. I've used my 55L containers for the past 12 years or so and they're as good as new.I now use 35L pots in my polytunnel for tomatoes and cucumbers. Yes, they take a lot of compost to fill them but you re use the compost time and time again. I make 3 cubic yards of compost in my allotment every year, so plenty for the garden.
Yeah, some people are set on the way they want to grow and that is fine
I’m looking forward to the database! It’s not always easy to find that info- I’ve had staff at local nurseries look at me like I’m crazy when I’ve if the potato varieties they were selling were determinate or indeterminate. I’ve learned a lot from you!
In fairness to them they dont know what they sell half the time. I will get it available as soon as I can find the time to complete it
Unless you have your own made compost it's an expensive way to grow them I find the trenches easy to do and if you get a dry summer you spend half your time watering the pots which you don't need to do half as much in trenches
i save my own water and its watered automatically. trenches is a good way too, just not for me
I drill a hole about 80 mm diameter and 200 mm deep, place seed potato in hole and fill in with soil and manure
Goes for everything in containers. What matters is a bacteria and fungus dominated potting mix. Organic fertilizer and liquid. Water everyday at morning if jt doesnt rain
Trusting outside inputs is becoming a gamble.
@@simplifygardening do you have a video on your water system?
Appreciate the code for Oakland gardens Tony. It saved me nearly thirty quid which equates too ten thirty litre containers & delivery for free.
I ordered fleece, netting and labels.
Thanks again for the discount code and the brilliant gardening advice.
Great channel mate.
Glad to help
I got converted to growing potatoes in containers after watching a video of yours many years ago and I ALWAYS managed to spear the largest tuber with a fork when growing directly in the ground. . I find using the thick top mulch (I use straw) greatly reduces the watering frequency and also surface weeds. Ease of harvesting is the winner for me plus storage over winter by removing the haulms and keeping the containers dry will allow harvests to continue during the hungry gap 👍
Thank you just bought the containers and you saved me money. Its time for the people to grow their own foods and become self sufficient. Keep the great videos coming.
Great video. Hi Tony I was wondering if you have ever looked at, or tried the Ruth Stout method of growing potatoes. In videos that show her method, and an actual film of her planting in her own garden. She basically places potatoes on the bare ground then just covers them with straw and that’s it. She was a fascinating woman (RIP) and worth checking out how she did her methods growing crops in her yard. In her own words she never visited a green grocers in her life after discovering this way of growing. All the best mate. 🍻
I want to say your new book is AMAZING! What surprised me the most was the first section on why we need to garden. It is full of well researched information and some amazing statistics. It has reinvigorated me to promote local food systems. My compliments on a wonderful book.
Thank you so much Bud I really appreciate that and am glad your enjoying it
I'm so excited for this! I've got 55 10 gallon pots already planted in US/zone 5A.
Oh thats great hopefully a fab crop
I'm still working on getting the Oakland Garden pots here in USA. Keep hitting road blocks.
As do I with getting them there
Im so excited to have found your channel, and i'm looking forward to learning from you! Also, your accent is to die for! Very easy listening! ♡
Great vlog Tony thank you👍
Love watching Tony's videos, so informative and genuine. Great work Tony, keep up the great work
Glad you like them! Thanks for the kind comment
Great video, keep up the good work
Tony, thanks for the discount code. Just ordered another 10 so I'll have 30 this year, though I use a few of them for courgettes and cherry tomatoes. As you say great space savers! Cheers
They really are fantastic to use
I am excited about that database for potatoes thanks man it will help many of newcomers
EYE OPENING !!!!!!! thank you, thank you
Thank you so much for the discount code! 😊🤗🌱
I took his advice two years ago but used a 50/50 soil mix (I ran out of compost).
It actually worked really well, just two containers sorted my family out for weeks.
I'm putting 4 containers out this year (because I couldn't convince my partner to let me rip up the lawn and replace it with a veg garden 😅
Fantastic video Tony. So much knowledge about growing potatoes you are the king of potatoes! 🥔 In containers is my favorite way of growing them and I'll always grow them that way 🧑🌾
Thanks so much. i appreciate that
Gonna try this!
great tips tony
This looks so nice and easy!
ill definately try it out next year
Hope you like it!
ITS april 5th 2024 in ireland, and the irish farmers cannot get their seed potatos out because of waterloged fields, more and more rain is the forecast , could Tonys idea be a good for householders to grow their own spuds , IV just started growing mine in large pots and sacks , Last year i got a great crop useing tonys methods , its well worth a try guys while its early , good luck.
Ireland and Wales have been slammed this year but containers allows you to stay on track
I'm loving this. The fact you can move them. Everything, I love Everything about this. I've just got to source some cheap pots now. I've already got my spuds planted in the ground bit I'm trying this too now.
Let me know how you get on
@@simplifygardening will do. Thanks . Appreciate the channel.
Thanks appreciate the support
I've been anxiously awaiting the time I can plant potatoes after watching your previous video. Thank you for breaking it down in more detailed steps. :) What do you think about using fabric grow bags? They seem to be the most economical in my area, in order to get containers the correct size. I'm in a pretty humid area.
Great technique for growing potatoes! I'm looking forward to your reference document on potatoes. Thanks.
Soon :)
Useful information
Glad you think so!
Brilliant guide, can't wait to see your full list once it's finished.
I've got 13 30l bags already out. But five of them I started in my living room greenhouse under lights at the beginning of feb. I'm so happy with how they've come along. They've been outside over two weeks and are thriving. I've been using tree covers at night when I know there might not be clouds to protect them and so far this has worked really well to avoid damage with them being out so early. Total experiment. But I'm having fun. Also in 🏴, sw.
Its been mild as far as temps this year. remember what might work this year might not next, but good luck on a fab crop
@@simplifygardening very true, especially in the sw, we've missed so much that the rest of the country has suffered so far. Every year is different as you say, too.
All we can do is work with what we have and what we know and adjust as we go
I’ve been able to get Oakland Garden containers through eBay in the US. Shipping is more than the cost of the container, but ends up being about $9.00 each. I’ve bought 30 at a time ( three times now!).
oh wow. that gets expensive like that. im still working on finding a supplier for the USA
I expect them to last many years.
Thank you for working on a potato guide. Can't wait.
Hope you enjoy!
I have been working with potatoes all my working life. All manual work for breeding work. I'm so glad this doesn't have to be in pots, I don't see any of those benefits. Increasing costs and much more work.
In Australia, I love the purple potatoes, purple inside and out. I purchased “Midnight Pearl” from the green grocer and waiting for them to grow chits then planted them. Thanks for your tips.
Your welcome. Purple Mash yup lol
Top bravo
A bientôt
Saw your video on this method 3 years ago, bought 10 of the containers you use , was impressed with the method & now have 40.
Growing medium is cheap commercial compost, mixed 50/50 with my own compost & I mix in either Growmore or blood, fish & bone, as there's no difference in results between them & potato fertiliser.
My first earlies (Swift) are just coming through & the last of my Charlotte went in yesterday.
I really like the 'spent' compost which comes at the end of potato growing, as it's more broken down & weed free, so I riddle off a couple of hundred litres & use it for next years seed & potting.
Perfect I am so glad your getting great results
Lots of great advice here and agreed far easier in containers, although I really need to copy your auto watering this year.
Go for it! Saves so much time
Great advice- I have been using the Oakland buckets for a while and keep adding to them each year- it is such a reliable method. My favourite spud Pink Fir Apple does particularly well. Looking forward to the data base- so difficult to obtain detailed info on many potatoes and a comparison guide is well overdue.
Yeah it is why I thought I would generate it. Its a ton of work but as soon as its complete i will make it available
great ...thankyou!
You are welcome!
Thanks Tony, love your channel. Any chance of a Short video on how to construct the irrigation system and what bits you need ?
See what I can do
Thanks for the discount code Tony... Grabbed myself another 10. :)
Thank you 😊 I ordered 10 buckets today love you can pay with PayPal. Thank you for the code you saved me £9 x
Hi Tony, What is the NPK ratio of the slow release fertilizer you use? Thank you for working on the database of potato types etc. I look forward to the download.
Disappointed this year, Swift and Rocket planted 4th feb in 30litre containers av. 1.2 kg. Aaron Pilot 1kg sown a bit later. Maybe lack of sun or harvested too early . Enjoyed growing them though
Another top video. I grow my potatoes in around 30 x 30ltr tubs. I saw in one of your previous videos that you were using straw on top of your pots as a protective measure. I was intending to do the same this year but I wondered if using cut grass would be just as effective, what do you think?.
Hello and many thanks for sharing.
You mention yielding around 10-15lbs of potatoes per container.
Is it a typical yield for first earlies or maincrop or both?
Many thanks again for sharing !
It is the only way many of us can grow potatoes and many other vegies when only have small gardens. It isn’t that expense be as you can re use the soil and just amend it as required the next year. I started by using 12inch buckets the first year thanks to another RUclips channel for all vegies now using same size buckets as you recommend and have raised beds. No I can’t produce as many as you but it’s exciting to produce some. Thank you as always Tony
You know what just producing a single meal is exciting if you never have done it before
@@simplifygardening my hubby was telling the lady where I buy my potting mix how excited I get when any seed implant grows and last week he thoroughly enjoyed the kale I harvested so much so he wanted more. That is a first time he made such a comment. To be honest I’m
Like a kid in a candy shop when my seeds all germinate. Have a good weekend I am awaking to a beaut autumn day.
Oh thats amazing especially as its a first time response
I like how you said you add one and a half ounces of fertilizer to 8 gallons twice plus 4 seed in 2 layers. But in the beginning you mentioned two fertilizers. So how much of each? You might have a good eye for one and a half ounces but the rest of us should probably measure! I wish you would mention the NPK ratio and other nutrients. Plus there's the unknown nutrient content of the compost. I love your recipe for success but I'm not able to replicate the results in the United States where we don't typically see blood fish and Bone or Vita x in the stores. I do get a similar yield per seed using the Mittleider method. Are you familiar with that? Thanks I love your videos.
That database is so lacking, you'll be doing the world a favor with it, thanks a lot for that.
Its a huge amount of work but I think it will be very useful for folks
@@simplifygardening Plus we can trust your database at that. I see conflicting info on determinate/indeterminate potatoes. Love your channel though. I'm in New Hampshire USA but still learn a lot and absorb your info. like a sponge. 👍🏻❤️
I'm going completely molehill soil and sharp sand 50 ,50 this year Tony.
Got even bigger yields than with compost and it's freeeeee!
Perfect let me know how that works for you I might have to try it next year f its good
HOW CAN I ELECTRIFY ZINC BOX TO KEEP SLUGS OUT OF RADSISHES GROWING IN BOX
Awesome video again, Tony. When it comes to mulch, what kind of straw can be used? My local home bargains sells bags of straw, but I don't know if it has to be a specific type. I am guessing that as long as there are nothing else added, then it would be ok to use. There is also a farmer that lives in my street, I could ask him if he would sell some to me if I can't get any from elsewhere.
if its straw you can use it, just dont use hay
Best method to use although would love to get a watering system in place. Might look into it would really help
Its been a game changer for me. It saves so much time
@@simplifygardening yea I love your set up, might watch a few videos on setting up a watering system. Also I've looked into a small solar panel but I'm not very mechanical.
Sold me Tony , I've got Charlotte's 2nd earlys waiting to go in my 30 litre pots , hopefully next week, thanks for the tips and for showing how it's done 👍
Fantastic! hope you have a great crop
@@simplifygardening hopefully so thanks once again Tony 👍
Your welcome
Tony what are you adding to your compost to help with water retention and where can i get it?
Tried both ways and i think potatoes grown in the soil taste better
Do you have a list for the irrigation system parts that you used?
Interested in recommendations/links for buckets in the US
Tony, my Lord of Potato Wisdom - gardening agony aunt😂 - how do I plant 'International Kidney' (bought because I'm a Kidney transplant recipient!😂) - Google says first Early/Second/Maincrop - so is it gonna grow on one level or all the way up? (30litre pots from Oakland😂❤).
Great video as usual, and I'm looking forward to your database. I'm finding 8 gal containers hard to find in the US since it seems 7 or 10 are most common. Given that which would you recommend? How much do you water your potatoes. Based on my research they need a LOT of water. Thanks, Tony.
Get a 10 then bud
can't wait for the database - dont forget kerrs pink and rooster!
They are in there
Hi Tony, wonderful video and information on your channel. This year I'll will start with container grown potatoes (Desiree) (also in cloth bags, around 26L sold as 30L though...). Besides my facination with the concept, I also try to combat annoying "mole crickets" in my garden. Do you also have experience with this devastating insect?
My main question: I'm a fan of the older Dutch varieties. Do you intend to include those in your database as well? I love the taste of "Eigenheimers" and my other Dutch favorites are "Bildstar", "Doré", "Bintje" and "Frieslander" I'd love to know your thoughts on those! Many gardeners in my communityplot don't cultivate these, many are quite phytophthora sensitive.
Im including everything I can find the info on. im at 724 varieties atm. If you want to send me their names I can check if they are in the database and if not get them included
Cheers Toni, another good video. I wish i had a poly or green house this year.. my spuds are getting hammered with rain and cold.. i dont have high hopes but ow well lol eventualy il afford a greenhouse or something to better protect against bad weather.. takes time and money.
Could you strap some short canes and plastic over them?
@@simplifygardening Yeah, that probably wouldnt cost much.. good idea.. il give it a try. Cheers!
Let me know how it goes
Great video, how many tubs of potatoes do you plant to be self sufficient all year? And how long will they store in the buckets? Thanks
Any time I planted Potatoes in a piece of ground behind my sheds thats too shaded and wet they never grew, but what should I plant there instead?
No diseased plants...can I reuse the potato container medium again for potatoes? I read today to plant another plant in rejuvenated medium.
Yes you can. as long as you give it extra feed say about 5 ounces total
@@simplifygardening thank you!
Those containers are hard to find and super expensive in Canada
For those of us that like to have a physical book would you publish that potato downliad on paper? There’s nothing better than picking up a book or manual.
As its a database I could make it a PDF file so you could print it yourself. Maybe I will include it into an Ebook we will see
That works! Thank you.
I have some 5 gallon pots that hold 5 gallons of soil and are rated for 3.7 gallons of water. Can I grow potatoes in these?
Can I use seaweed for mulch ?
Hi Tony, this will be the first year i attempt to grow potatoes in containers. Do you have any advice and recommendations on buying compost to fill the containers? As this is something new to me and the massive availability of store bought composts ,including garden centres, the large D.I.Y chains who all sell composts {although i know all composts are not equal having had many failures in various different brands.}
Any help , advice and recommendations are greatly appreciated, as your experiences growing vegetables and growing mediums is why you have gained the knowledge over many years experience.
I am on a very low budget, so anyway i can boost or enhance the compost is something i will consider. i just don't have the room to grow in the soil at site i am growing on.
Thanks for your reply to my previous comment, i know how busy you are, with work, your family life and your allotment, so thanks in advance mate.
If the pots are 30 quid for ten , its an absolute steal
I have just received my order of pots from Oakland last week and I am VERY pleased with them. So much so that I am about to order another 20 to grow soft fruit bushes carrots and a few beetroot and leeks in as I can no longer dig my plot due to arthritis.
Great job. Yeah they are a great product
Yeah and that includes delivery too
@@simplifygardening amazing I'm getting some
Awesome
Is it a good or bad idea to add coco coir to the compost when growing potatoes? If it is good, how much should I mix into each 30 litre pot?
What should I do if the blood fish and bone meal always goes mouldy when put into soil? I never get it right!
There's another great benefit to using containers. I'm a no till gardener so i don't have to disturb the vast carbon reservoir in my soil... good for the climate and good for me. And besides, my 80 year old back grumbles an awful lot when i go for the garden fork. 🤣🤣🤣
Im the same im 95% no till so perfect here too
Hi Tony, I've sown my earlies in a big container, at what point should i water later on, at the moment their in my conservatory because of a lot of rain, first time doing first earlies, Thanks
They will need moisture to really get going so give them an initial water then wait for the foiliage to pop
@@simplifygardening Thank you..
I wish we could buy those here in the U.S. for that cheap. The closest thing that I could find were Pro Cal 10 gallon nursery pots and I had to pay $185.61 for 20 of them after tax.
WOW! finding a distrubutor seems to be an issue along with import taxes. your government really don't like helping
"groundbreaking"! 🤣
The system over here is making me wait til April 18th to get coconuts coir. My potatoes has been sitting back in the cool room 2 weeks. They are really sprouting. Some has long sprouts. What should I do. They are going 20 gallon growing container. Should I go on and plant and for get about the coconut coir now I have two types butter ball and russet.
Dont wait for the coir they will be fine in just compost.
@@simplifygardening ok
I show advice about sprouting in my video today.
How many main crop can I grow in a 30L container?
Just 2 main crop in the lower third. 4 first and 2nd earlies as shown in the video
Have you tried bigger containers?
Oh, i forgot: Do you have a link to the drip feed system you're using?
I get it off Amazon just search drip feed and all the parts are there for you to select
@@simplifygardening Some links might be a good point of value though :D (remember, a lot of us are the guy's who don't know what we are looking for ..... or AT for that matter lol) .... Another question on the watering drip system. For those of us who don't have the space for lots of IBC totes... would it be ok to run this kind of setup from a water butt and fill the water butt with tap water (as opposed to rainwater).
I only have a 5m x 5m garden, but on the plus side it is south facing with 1.5m high brick walls, in effect a perfect growing area like a miniature walled garden. I want to maximise the space by using cold-frame-topped raised platforms and your bucket method and drip irrigation. (I was considering building a greenhouse covering the whole area and having plants grow in there for the whole season, but nobody seems to be able to give a definitive answer on whether this would be detrimental to the plants or tuber yield in the hotter part of the year)....
If you could answer any of those questions or have any hints or advice it would be most welcome.
Best Wishes
I agree. leave it with me and I will sort a list out and put it in the community page I wont add it here or it will throw the algorithm off and reset it. might be a day or two though as I am still unwell
@@simplifygardening Oh dear... sorry to hear that, hope you are feeling well again soon fella :D... Thank you for the response too :D
Cheers appreciate that
How many seed potatoes per 30L pot?
if they are a first early, second early or determinate potato then use 4 as shown in the video. if a main crop or indeterminate then just 2 in the bottom 3rd of the container
Can grow potatoes in bales of straw.nothing in ground
Yes u can
Yo Tony!! Question is do you like chips?
Who doesn't lol
Glad to see someone who is not full of shit
Thanks lol
Easy, very rarely is the most productive way in the garden. Been growing spuds for 60 years in the ground. Experimented several ways the last ten years with fiber bags, towers, boxes, even truck tires. I get between 25 to 35% the yield with these methods vs growing them in the ground. When ground grown and hilling with indeterminate less than 20%. I personally find these methods more work with the extra watering. Done experimenting these methods aren't practical or productive
Buying potatoes would be much cheaper than all those pots.
If you knew how to do math then you would know what he's doing is way cheaper over the course of time. He's been using those pots for 15 years and counting.
I tried to use your link in Amazon, it does state UK and US. I'm in Belfast which is UK but they won't deliver unless I change my address. It's infuriating tbh, we are part of the UK and use GBP and yet It won't accept it.
The link only works on the website and they only ship in the UK Belfast is still part of the EU and they have stopped the transfer of products without huge costs
How about pest control?
Ill have a video on it coming at the relevant time
38.95 per container @ oakland gardens? WTF?
