Thanks! Getting error messages on links though
So a big stopper ND1000 won't work? I already invested in one for my tele lens.
+Astrodamus not unless it's designed for solar work. It would be very dangerous to point it at the sun.
Tony, there seems to be a lot of interest for the Opteka telephoto you've mentioned. Would you mind elaborating on your recommendation?
Thanks. I'll get some solar film and be safe.
If the sun is in shadow, will flash help fill it in?
+Eric
I've talked to all those people in the stadium seats who enable flash during Olympic games, and they assure me your flash will help.
I get better results with a reflector placed on the opposite side of the planet
After reading on eclipse sites they all recommend NOT TO USE a flash during an eclipse. This is because a flash won't reach the sun and all it will do is ruin everyone's night vision which they will have gained during totality. They explicitly recommend turning off flash so there is no possible way to have it go off and have this happen. It should be mentioned the entire reason an eclipse is special is because the sun is in a shadow state while being blocked by the moon. Altering that wouldn't make any sense as you're specifically going to witness the shadow. So please be courteous and DO NOT ENABLE YOUR FLASH DURING A SOLAR ECLIPSE.
Awe somepandapig Woooosh!
I've already tested my rig with straight sun shots. I plan to set up a time lapse on the day, even though it will be only a partial from here. The tricky bit will be keeping it in the frame, but I'm only using a 300mm zoom. Can't wait to see what you guys shoot!
Good luck! :)
Hey Tony. Good stuff! You may want to consider backing down on that focal length. During totality there are faint corona visible that extend out quite a bit from the sun's disk, you will want to get those. I have found 500-800 to actually be a pretty good fl for shooting eclipse images. Good luck and don't forget to enjoy the view!
I was think of buying a telescope but now I can use the Opteka!!!!
Nice use of the Whilhelm Scream
It's handy that you're publishing these videos almost a month in advance, so people have time to buy what they want/need.
B&H prepared an entire photographer's catalog 2 months in advanced!
I laughed a little too loudly at that Wilhelm scream...
If you have a flip-out screen, then I don't see a reason to have the camera mounted so high. Looking down is a lot easier and safer too!! Also, the sun will likely be white if you are not somewhere near sunrise or sunset. Finally, if you are in the path of totality, then 2000mm may be too much if you want to get the corona and all the good stuff involved with that. Bracketing is a must, too. There is a lot of cool stuff going on. One other thing....getting the sun in the frame is a LOT easier if you use a zoom lens....zoom back during the partial phase...find and track the sun (the partial phase lasts a lot longer than totality, but the good stuff is during totality)...once totality nears and the light of the sun starts to diminish, make your final adjustments on getting the sun framed nicely in your LCD in LV as it won't move much during totality...then remove that filter and start your bracketing and shot sequence. Plan to watch some too if this is your first TSE.
No, the color of the sun has nothing to do with how much light is blocked, it is the filter is producing an orange color (if at midday). If those shots are at sunrise or sunset, then the color of the sun will be orange-ish, but if it midday or when the sun is high in the sky, the sun will be white, unless you use an orange-colored filter, to produce a fake-looking sun. I have a white filter and my midday suns are indeed white but the filter only shows an image when the camera is pointed at the sun. Get the sun out of the frame and you get a totally black image. The corona is really only possible if you are in the path of totality.
Gantcho Gantchev Me too. I'm in SC though so we have a good change of getting clouds, but I'm going to try anyway.
Thanks Anthony for this comment! Good common sense approach. This will be my first live viewing of an eclipse and attempt to capture an image. Whatever pics I manage to get, I'll be happy with - I am traveling to Totality. Can't wait
We've given up, huh? Emojii's in the titles of your videos. You guys are quality! It may seem minor...but is that what it takes these days to compel people to click on your videos?
I've been waiting for this video. Thanks!
This video was incredible. Thank you so much! I do have a question though. Would a welding hood work as a UV filter for my camera? I'm really wanting to capture the solar eclipse, but with the least amount of supplies possible.
Sorry, I don't know. I wouldn't risk it.
Forget the eclipse, I just want that lens! Almost spat out my drink when I saw the cost though...
I want one too. If you make money with it, as Tony did with his animal stock photography, it would be a no brainer.
What a great video.
Great video, you may want to check your redirect as /solar is throwing a 404 right now as it heads over to Pagely.
Also I did a few test shots with solar filter on, looking through the viewfinder, when the mirror kicks it is unpleasant, so 100% agree re: live view only.
Its case sensitive.
@ryan it looks like it is working now, I think it was just a timing thing :)
Im guessing this will be the same scenario for video capturing via telescope?
I have a 70-300 mm lens on my Nikon D5300. Do you think that it's worth to buy a Opteka 500mm / 1000mm f/6.3 just for the eclipse (I will be in the totality)? Thanks !!
get a star tracker for SLR. It will let you track the sun.
Trying to gear up for the 2024 eclipse and I have a question about the lens....is having a F4 lens critical or would a F5.6 lens produce very similar results?
You wanna shoot at f8 or higher so a f5.6 lens would be fine.
One cool bit of kit people who do astro or solar photography regularly is the ioptron skytracker. It is a tripod mount which follows celestial objects. Very useful .
Thank you for this! So much useful information.
A hint on getting your camera lens pointed at the sun, look at the shadow of the telescope/lens on the ground. The idea is to make the shadow as small as possible, this should bring the sun in the FOV.
Good tip!
Will a polarizer lens work as well? for the eclipse? cus i dont wanna damage anything Pls answer
any tips for photographing uranus?
Getting a Nikon mounting kit for my son's telescope.
+Bryon
A father spending time sciencing with his kid = awesomeness :)
This is all very good advice. There's an important thing to know about the Mylar solar filters which Tony didn't mention. Depending on your lens and its anti-reflection performance, you might get some really bad flare and fog from reflections. If that happens, make a cardboard sleeve to hold the Mylar sheet and allow you to position it a little farther from the front of the lens. That can often improve the reflections. If you're using it on a zoom lens, try zooming back a little from max.
Also, I wanted to point out to Tony that his lens + camera configuration yields an effective per-pixel resolution of 0.69 arc seconds. To resolve a feature it ideally has to span at least two pixels to be distinguished from noise, which is 1.38 arc seconds. Atmospheric stability that allows resolving features that small is only available at very few sites on Earth, like the summit of Mauna Kea. Most of the eclipse path crosses low terrain that is way down in the soup of the lower atmosphere. Also, it's going to be late August. Thermal turbulence is going to make the atmosphere boil, especially near urban areas. Then the further east you are, the lower in the sky the sun will be. I think your lens is probably overkill x2 or x3.
I'm using a small telescope 325mm focal length, f/7.2 with a 2x extender and EM-5 Mk II for the partial phases. Even that one is optimistic. But it will be on a tracking mount set to solar rate, so I can set it and forget it. I'm using an external interval timer to take hundreds of bracketed photos in the hopes that a few will by chance capture an image when the air is still(ish).
For totality I have a 2nd EM-5 Mk II with the Olympus 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO and Olympus 1.4x extender, giving me 210mm f/4 at full zoom. Depending on how the corona looks, I might back off of max a bit. Bracketing like crazy, of course, using external timer.
what HE said..... ;)
This is what I've been looking for. I'm lucky enough to be in the path of the total eclipse! Thank you so much for the tips! Can't wait!
What if i want to take a picture of the eclipse as part of a landscape? Would it be too small? I know I'd be easier to just add it in post but i perfer not to do that.
The sun has about the same angular diameter as the moon... about half a degree. So if you've shot the moon, you know how big the sun is going to be.
This is great information, thanks!
I've got a Celestron C8 which my Sony A7 attaches too. I have a solar filter for the C8. I'll have that lot on a Celestron AVX equatorial mount so I can track the sun. There's just one little problem. Where ever I intercept the path of totality, it will be overcast and even raining. It doesn't matter where. Nebraska. Tennessee. South Carolina. It will be raining or at least overcast.
I really want to catch the earthshine on the moon during that moment of totality.
The video was lagging and my ISP is Frontier (what was formerly Verizon FiOS)... I double check the video quality and- holy shit. 4k at 60fps!? What kind of camera records 4k at 60fps!?
THANK YOU!! Good to know!! I'll be observing in South Carolina! Woo hoo!!!! Don't know if it would be worth shooting it with my 105 mm macro, but I'm thinking not.
The mirror lens you recommended as budget option is really hard to focus in infinity, also, it's so light that the mirror and shutter motion will blur the image even with delay! It gets slightly better with mirror lockup, but an electronic shutter is the key here to getting a sharp image with a mirror lens on a tripod.
Svante Ekholm what's your alternative for a cheap telephoto...one of the longer optecka ones?
I'm not Svante, but if I were on a tight budget, I'd get a spotting scope and digiscope it.
I got myself an old Tokina 400mm f/6.3 manual focus conventional lens. Decent sharp at f/8-f/11 even on APS-C.
I have an old Nikkor 300mm/4.5 ai lens (circa 1979) and a x2 teleconverter of similar vintage. Do you think I'd be better off at 300mm and cropping more or using the converter?
Hey Tony, I bought some similar solar filter paper. I'm toying with making a more "permanent solution and wanted your thoughts. I typically put a cheap UV filter on the front of my lens specifically to protect it physically. (I know it doesn't do squat for anything else) and was thinking of gluing that filter to the paper. Thoughts?
One RUclips video I checked said I should invest in a Hydrogen-Alpha filter for the solar eclipse. Is that something should invest in? I know B&H sells them but has sold out of the filters because of the Solar eclipse. Also where would be the best place to get a hydrogen-Alpha filter? I hear that a Hydrogen Alpha filter helps take photos at night to brighten up stars.
Wait... I thought it was eye-so when talking about sensitivity to light and eye-ess-oh when talking about the International Standards Organization... TOOOOOOOOONNNNNYYYY!!!!!
This is still such a great and informative video, Opteka has some very affordable options I have a 650-1300mm that crops similarily to 2080mm on a crop body. It's an f8-16 manual focus lens and does suffer from some CA so it's not great for sports or wild life, but the utility offered with the magnification for Lunar or in this case Solar Photography or Video, might ballance out comparing to heavily cropping.
Do you have similar advice for film camera users? I.e. Looking through the viewfinder without permanent eye damage ...
Tony... MAJOR problem re the eclipse. I just got the Opteks f6.3 mirror lens. it came with a T-Mount for my Nikon DX7200 and a 2x multiplier. I can't focus on long range items like mountains that are 2-3 miles away. Not enough travel on the manual focus. This lens was supposed to be for the DX7200. Have I set the camera up wrong or something else? Going to Idaho in a week! Thanks, Mitch
why would you do all of that just to shoot a big black dot on the sky
Don't ever tape solar film in the way shown in this video. Buy a piece with a larger diameter than the lens aperture and wrap it over the barrel. Secure it with tape and rubber bands. Also, always hold it up in front of the Sun and inspect for pinholes or cracks prior to use. You recommended a very dangerous method. Not one major film dealer would suggest doing it the way you showed. I hope my message reaches folks. I'd hate for a heavy wind or loose tape to cause a gap. Goodbye camera equipment. Worse, your eyes.
Hello Sir, A big confusion.... whether to go for canon 6D mark ii or Nikon D750...??? Please help me choosing the worth..!!!
Why can't a person use viewfinder with solar filter at end of camera? Lets assume a person won't make the sun more than 20% of the frame and the filter is very secure?
I want to do this but with an Hydrogen alpha filter. The sun looks rather boring without a filter that can bring out the details in the corona.
Omg, thats so crazy that you melted right through the 52mm solar filter. Why do they even sell such a thing?? I drove from Rhode Island to Tennessee with my new 600 f/4 IS II, and sadly I wasn't able to get any filters for it before leaving, so I intended on only photographing the totality. Luckily someone at the rest stop I took the photos from had a solar filter massive enough to cover the front element on my 600 f/4
Can I use my g7 with 200mm eqv no fliter at f22 1/16000 iso 100 to shot the solar Eclipse ?
How do you white balance sun photos? Still have photos from the 2015 eclipse and can't decide whether to make them look like a mature gouda cheese ball (my girlfriend's words) or to leave it white (or b/w) altogether or something in between...
Good video. Some links are not working. Just a heads up. Cheers
I didn't watch this until after the eclipse, but if infrared and uv light are an issue through regular nd filters, why did i suffer no damage or even a perceptible effects short or long term from looking through the viewfinder of a dslr with a glass 500mm f8 with 2x teleconv using a plain old 10 stop nd? (With a slightly stopped down aperture, the sun doesn't even look bright through that setup, but i have looked through wide open too).
Next North American eclipse is April 08 2024 😁
I would recommend a remote trigger or wifi app. Using the shutter button invites too much movement to the shot.
If we're not directly in the path of the Total Solar Eclipse (I believe here it's right around 95% totality), can/should we still take the film off during the strongest point of the solar eclipse?
Hey Tony, I want to ask you that I have a Nikon D5300 and whenever I use the manual mode and set the shutter speed, the camera just automatically adjusts it shutter speed to a different. The same problem came when with aperture. What should I do to avoid such a problem?
Hey Tony. Thanks for the tutorial. I immediately purchased the opteka lens afterwards. Any tips or suggestions for working with this lens?
If you are still looking for a lens, you are LATE. The price for the lens you would need has jumped like crazy. The low-end telephoto lenses that are normally $70 have gone into triple digits. Don't wait anymore or else you will get hit harder in the wallet
I am having difficulty finding SDP.10 Solarfilm. Could you mention a dealer that handles this. Thanks
Hey, if getting that 500 mm lens you recommend do you also recommend getting a 2x teleconverter? What would get the best results on a full frame D750 if I change it to crop mode?
Question, could you use those solar eclipse glasses mounted on the front of a lens to take photos? it's not like the sun is going to fill the frame of a 200-500 mm lens and I think with some cardboard I could make a simple cover -- assuming that it wouldn't damage my sensor.
watching your video for the eclipse in 35 days!!!
Tony. great video....BUT has the Earth now become centre of the solar system ...The Sun Moves?
I told u before that that tripod is so much sturdier at 45 degree wide legs setting!, high and narrow angle like that much more wobbly, even if ur more comfy :p Try it ull definitely feel the huge difference when u try n shake it. Thanks about the solar film tho! i guess id better get it so i dont burn my sensor hmm :/
Total solar eclipse will happen today Dec 26, 2019
Hi Tony! Do you think the HI-res shot mode in Olympus cameras would work for taking pictures of the Sun?
Any tips for 10th June 2021 Solar eclipse
hey Chelsea !
you have a double ....French international women soccer player
check her profile pic out and tell me its not spooky
twitter.com/sakinakarchaoui
I personally would not recommend getting a tall tripod because in that case you will be looking up constantly almost into the sun and if not careful might damage yours eyes. The solar eclipse glasses are too dark and you might have to take them off when making tweaks on camera settings and exposing yours eyes to sun.
A good way to line up to camera to the sun is use the shadow of the camera on the ground so that it's dead square and you can only see the camera body silhouette exactly square on. Saves you risking looking towards the sun. Use this technique for my telescope as well works every time.
If I remove the solar filter during totality and am shooting in live view, will this not let the sun's harmful rays directly into the sensor? Will this damage the sensor?
I've been waiting for good tips on shooting the solar eclipse as this will be my first attempt at shooting one. Thanks for this video!
Interesting Video.Have you personally photographed a total solar eclipse before?
Keep Killing it!! Awesome video
AWESOME! what gimbal or stabilizer are you guys using like at 1:03?
Hey Tony, are you going to go elsewhere to see the total eclipse? the total is a lot more beautiful than the partial ;)
60p also looking ridiculous. That house looks green screened. Sorry to be so negative.
Tony & Chelsea, are you guys going to travel to an area with that is in the path of totality. I'm in Missouri and will have about 2 min of totality.
"The sun moves". No, it's actually the earth moving.🤣
You can easily aim your camera at the sun by looking at the shadow of the camera and lens. Adjust the aim until the shadow is as small as it gets. The sun should then be in the viewfinder.
I have shot a partial sun eclipse with a mirrorless camera. I have used f/32 which reduces significantly the amount of light entering the image sensor and two ND 1000 together filter which reduce 20 stops the light and are quite cheap. Also I selected ISO 50. I turned upward the display of the camera I didn't have to look directly the sun with my telephoto lens at all. I was looking down the display when the lens was pointing upwards.
The resulting photos were great.
where can I buy the film?
Seventy mile wide eclipse shadow on a planet thousands of miles wide..mmmmm.... science and then there’s nasa science lol
Hi thanks for the video... I will be in Florida do o still need a filter? I don't how strong the view it's going to he here.. Please let me know thanks
Where do I get some solar film? I'll be in totality. Your link isn't working.
You can us a chair to sit down. This way you can take off the cove with the filter still taped on the cover at a lower height.
Isaac Newton used to stare at the sun for hours and poke sticks in his eyes to see what happened.
I was hoping you two would do this! Thx before even watching video!
Seems like a lot of effort for just a couple minutes of a solar eclipse. I think I'll just let other people shoot it and enjoy their pics.
I would never rely on a piece of tape to save my eyesight.
The time on the map does not match the time on other sources. Do you know the exact time for Virginia Beach?
Can I attach this Opteka Telephoto lens to an A7rii or A6000? Thanks!
Thanks for the Video. A huge help. What is your feeling of the opteka?
I put black paper of my 300 mm lens and put s pinhole in the end it worked great
with a filter, do i have to use a mini telescope/ magnifier for my smartphone?
I made a Sun Gun to photo the eclipse. Cant wait, have my tickets and all .
Tony, you hooked me in to this hobby, spare rooms a studio, my gear head muscle is activated again, amazon prime hates me...yada yada yada...you two are fun to watch and learn from...Charlotte NC
I think if you have the solar filter properly secured (with absolutely no light leaks), you can look through the viewfinder with the solar film on the END of the telephoto lens. The same can be said about a telescope- and a telescope is essentially a giant telephoto lens with a fixed aperture.
What if you don't have a photographer camera I have a digital camera
What about shooting 4K video
Thanks Tony!! I was waiting for your video!
Do you recommend bracketing exposure?
Thanks - got me motivated. Made hotel reservations (hardly anything left available in Oregon - and I'll still have to drive over an hour that morning), bought the Optika, solar filter film and ISO shades. I already have a "tank of a tripod". Now practice
