  • Intercepting plastic in rivers is the single most efficient way to reduce inflow into the oceans - and now with Interceptor 007, we're tackling plastic in Los Angeles County, USA.
    Follow the journey from the start: from visiting the site and collaborating with local partners to constructing and shipping Interceptor 007 to its new home in Ballona Creek. Subscribe to our channel to stay updated: bit.ly/371k8sN

    To rid the oceans of plastic, we need to not only clean up the legacy plastic that is already out there, but also stop new plastic from entering the ocean: we need to close the tap.
    Rivers are the main source of ocean plastic pollution. They are the arteries that carry waste from land to the ocean. Working together with government leaders and private corporations around the world, our goal is prevent plastic from ever reaching the ocean via the world's rivers. How? By deploying Interceptors.
    The Interceptor is The Ocean Cleanup’s answer for river plastic waste. It is the first scalable solution to prevent plastic from entering the world’s oceans from rivers.

    This is GREAT! In order to help your huge effort WE need to curb the volume of trash that washes off the streets into our waterways. I take the trash out of a local creek that has been flagged as a major polluter to the lower Russian River here in Northern California. Most of it is surface trash mixed with some encampment trash here and there. Thank you, The Ocean Cleanup for the HUGE work you and your team are doing around the globe!!

      @@robertwoodpa6463 Heck! You are a good guy for picking a bag of roadside trash!! If we all pick up a little trash here and there it would make a sizable difference. The trash puzzle is big and there are many pieces to it, but clean streets and neighborhoods is a big piece of the puzzle and most people can participate in that part of the cleanup.

      Where I live (UK) there are volunteer groups who organise regular beach litter pick-ups on the Severn Estuary - lots of families with children take part. Big river, tiny area cleaned, but every effort is worthwhile!

      Except citizens are not really the problem. It’s large companies that have been allowed by our governments to use disposable plastics at such huge scales. ❤glad to see Coca Cola is helping fund the project but they are also one of the biggest contributors to the problem and if they really wanted to help they could do much more.

      @@lindaj5492 Yes! Volunteer groups are good for cleanup events and create a great sense of community. We have a couple monthly cleanup events in my area that make a big difference in our local waterways. When Covid started all our events came to a standstill for awhile, that is when I started my RUclips channel about trash removal.

      @@mastahfrederique1147Good catch! I agree with the statement that plastic wise, other rivers probably would be better to tackle.
      Also agree with the awareness point, more funding also accelerates their goal. I also think bureaucracy is probably a big part of the long launch window of an interceptor. The 007 was probably relatively easy to realise paperwork wise . Does not look to be in a busy boat route. And in an English speaking country where they have somewhat of a precense already. Our currency known as Ringgit has been in the downward trend since many years ago and improvement or recovery from the ongoing predicament seems to be bleak at least in the near future but who knows what's going to happen many years to come. The manpower cost to assemble the whole thing on site in Malaysia is therefore significantly lower in comparison to assemble it in LA or USA.

    every city i've ever been to has garbage all around, at least in certain areas of the city. the problem is that we consume SO much as a society, esp in cities, and so little of our waste is compostable. Even if 99% of people properly dispose of 99% of their waste, that still leaves enough waste to make places gross. e.g. LA has 4 million people with US avg of 6 pounds of trash per day. Even if it's just 40k people dumping 0.06 pounds per day, that's still 2.4 TONS of trash *every* *single* *day*.
    Communities shouldn't be shamed bc of their trash problems. Yes, we need to fix them, but we must realize the problems are more systemic: Our materials are killing the earth. We simply cannot expect that everything will always be disposed of properly. It doesn't happen and expecting it to is insane. As such, we need to push harder into sustainable materials, esp for one-use disposable objects like utensils and bags. Thankfully, a lot of r&d is happening, and some states are making move to ban certain materials, but there's a LOT further to go. however, that's going to be most of the solution in the long term. That said, love the interceptor for helping in the short term with our inherent, systemic packaging failure.
    I hope to see these across the US and the world. And hope to see a day when we no longer need them.

    Must be a poor waste management system in the LA since the waters are polluted with trash. It's good that there's an interceptor there, but it is absolutely essential to stop the trash to ever enter the rivers.

    i'm really concerned that coca cola is a partner AND the world's bigger polluter 3 years in a row. solving pollution also means reducing trash. you're an amazing company and deserve better than coca cola to help you cleaning what they are responsible for

      At least Coca-cola is aware that it needs to improve its green credentials. It’s a start: hope other big multinationals follow their example - and that they’re all prepared to have their entire production system scrutinised!

      @Josh Pence yeah buts its the coca cola bottles that they are throwing out which means its plastic as a whole. The worlds plastic pollution problems shouldnt have to be all on the individual consumer. These huge companies who contribute to the majority of the waste need to do their part as well. Im not saying by any means that people just throwing trash everywhere willy nilly are ok either but its a whole systematic change that needs to happen where we dont use so much plastic that we think that its ok to just throw it out on the side of the road

    • @Hennie1254
      @Hennie1254 Год назад +1

      @@JortsoftheJungle I am pretty sure (but I have no proof) that PepsiCo and CocaCola are pretty busy with trying to invent something that works just as good as plastic. Because to be real; Plastic is not the problem. Plastic is awesome. But plastic pollution is the worst! I don't think that CocaCola and Pepsi cola want to be responsible for the problem. But untill a good alternative is available, plastic will be used for the storage of food and drinks.
      My hope is that PepsiCo and CocaCola would have a big public battle about who gets to be the biggest sponsor of these cleanup situations. Deal with the pollution problem while working on a solution to prevent new pollution.

    Have fast food outlets in USA not yet been REQUIRED to stop using one-time plastics, and replace those items with biodegradable materials? For instance, bamboo cutlery; cups and food containers made from recycled paper & cardboard (without plastic lining).

      As a matter of principle I'm against government meddling in business, but this certainly is a tempting place to do it. The greasy paper bags and napkins thrown from car windows around here are still nasty, but at least they will decompose within a year or so if nobody cleans them up. Or faster if hit by a lawnmower. The soil is full of shreds of mowed plastic that will never go away.

    I am a cyclist, been riding for 42 years, everywhere I ride I see trash in the ditches on the sides of the roads and walking in town i see trash in the gutters, cigarette butts plastic straws, cups. Everything you see on the streets in your town end up in some waterway. In the coastal town I was born in in California, they just added a 25 cent charge if you use a throw away cup. Where ever I am at I pick up trash I see, just think if everyone did that. People are in the mindset that oh someone will pick that up, or clean that beach or? We cant always wait for a interceptor.

    • @lindaj5492
      @lindaj5492 Год назад

      25c charge for them to SUPPLY you with a throw-away cup?!? Back-to-front logic: the company should be charged or taxed with incentives of lower charges as they increase recycled & reusable materials, and reduce / eliminate single-use products.
