we need more representation of black girls in eco-conscious spaces... all of these women are beautiful!!!
Yes!! I so agree 👏🏾👏🏾
It would be better if the ladies would say their density, hair porosity, and texture. Hair type does not indicate the nature of the hair.
The hair type is important to what to expect for definition. That is the texture. Porosity is important for moisture retention and density is arbitrary because that is just volume. Clarification of hair type [texture] *and* porosity is important so people know what to expect and what may/maynot work for them.
Transparency leads to less "my hair didn't turn out like that" because we can be confident in our differences.
wait how do you find those things?
I agree. I feel like hair types is important but not important.
I agree
100% agree
Loved the video! I’ve written two science backed books on Natural hair care using natural products. Just have some thoughts:
1. ACV is great but please use it sparingly. If you need a good clarifying treatment use it like once a month. More than that. Is really too stripping😕
2. Honey is AMAZING because it’s a humectant. Coconut is a STRONG protein so if ur protein sensitive please be careful. 😳
3. Flaxseed is amazing! You can also add dried herbs like rosemary or sage will it’s boiling to infuse everything. 😍
4. You can’t use however much you want for tea tree essential oil. It’s VERY potent. Use like 2-3 drops or else you risk burning ur scalp 🥵
5. If you don’t like the smell of ACV, Aztec bentonite clay is AMAZING.
6. Andre Walker hair typing doesn’t matter tooo much. Focus on ur porosity, hair density, strand thickness, scalp oil levels, and curl circumference matter most. 😍
7. Shea butter is great but may suffocate certain hair types. It’s really best for think strand size. 😅
8. If you make ur flaxseed thick it will form a white cast. 😳
7. Do what works best for you!
This was so helpful! Thank you so much!
Yeah I was thinking the same thing about the ACV rinse and how stripping it can be if used too often. I don't usually think of a clay wash as *that* stripping but it does detoxify and that sounds like trouble if used constantly... right? Do you know of any diy cleansers that are safe for weekly use?
Sis is coming through with FACTS!
Great tips! Thank u !
yes, I can confirm that all you have said is true!. my thick hair hates shea butter too
Hey Energii didn’t expect to see you here, great tips as always tho 😅❤️
So... I've been no waste for years and didn't even know it.
Cool 😎 ✊🏾
🤭😂😂
It isnt necessarily no waste; it is a lot less than your typical shampoo and conditioner in theory.
But then there’s the plastic bottles of honey, cans of coconut milk, glass jars of coconut oil, and bags of flax seed.
@@SqueeshFeesh883yurz reuse the bottles for your own oil mixture. Honey is purchased in glass jars in my place, and those jars are used for either crafts or other food and drink purposes. I don't use any flaxseed or any other gel in my hair. I also don't use the coconut milk. So yeah, you can make this no waste.
@@missdaliesh eventually things get thrown away. 🤷♀️
I’m not trying to argue with you and I don’t know you so I don’t know what your specific routine is, all I could go off of was the fact that you said you were using a zero waste routine, I was just saying these routines aren’t 100% zero waste. Some of the products they’re items are held in take a long time to break down in nature.
Its low waste; that’s still better than not trying at all.
Tea tree oil is an essential oil. You don’t want to add “as much as you want” because it will dry your scalp out.
All essential oils dry you out?
I have a major problem with dry skin, so I want to keep track of this stuff.
@@recoil53 they are really un-necesary in hair care. so don't worry do it without adding them it will be allright. the hair need nutrition and moisture, essential oils are neither. you'll be good 👍
@@recoil53ps : we 100% don't need anti-fungal*anti-microbial if the scalp is healthy. it's not even helpful or something we want to do, because the scalp has it's own defense mechanism and it has to do with the natural flora living on the skin.
@@celinee.9562 Thank-you. So all that stuff is for show.
When using essential oils like tea tree, it’s suppose to be diluted with an oil ( coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, almond oil, etc)
Black women who care about the environment 😍. I love this already.
Fr
Once you know your holy grail, buy in bulk, this decreases delivery costs and can decrease packaging if a gallon bottle is purchased vs 8 oz if available
DIY is definitely a good LOW waste practice!
Unfortunately, until we can buy our butters, powders and oils from a Bulk, Refill or Zero Waste store these routines won’t truly be “ZERO Waste”. BUT, every small step we take counts so I’m all for it!
Please PLEASE, DO NOT tell people that they can put any amount of an essential oil into their mixes! You only need a few drops, too much could cause skin irritation.
Takes me back to the early days of natural hair youtube when everything was _meant_ to be environmentally conscious so it was full of DIYs. People have been moving farther and farther away from that side of the natural hair movement and it makes me sad to see more and more people hoarding single use product and using petroleum again because it seems convenient
I think it's similar to the vegan movement. It started out with more hippiesque people wanting to do right by nature & animals and such. Now it's all about being skinnier and better at the gym and people are out here buying meat replacements from Nestle and Unilever
These comments made me realize that the biggest culprit is consumerism. Instead of these movements being about the earth and creating a better environment, they became watered down into buying more or the wrong motivations
Vivian is the sun, the prettiest person ever.
This was very encouraging as a black zero waste warrior to see others making the same strides and bringing others on board. An thanx to the people who were willing to try knowing natural isn’t always (most often not) convenient
Thanks for the video. However, hair type doesn’t say much about what you hair does and is, especially when your hair looks different wet and dry. Porosity is a better indicator for what what your hair needs and how to manage it
Yes, I knew my hair type but the tips I was using from people I was following didn't help me at all. Until about two years ago I learned about porosity and that my hair is low and hates protein and the stuff I was using.
@@beckyp2944 sameee it’s the worst 🥺
FACTS
Both are helpful but when it comes to what to expect hair type is important but the retention of moisture is more about porosity.
The moisture/hydration level difference is visually noticeable in the before & afters!! All of those natural products are so beneficial, but with out all the unnecessary chemicals of a typical shampoo/conditioner brand.
I can't believe I've been doing zero waste hair care and I had no idea....love it
All these beautiful melanin shades 💕😃☺
There’s only like 3 shades lol
@@noirblanque5324 theres more than 3..
Hair typing became divisive because people turned it into that. It is a useful tool for beginner naturals and a handy info filter. Of course, there are more accurate ID factors to consider on top of general typing, but I wouldn't completely count it out.
This was so beautiful and they’re all black women 🥺 Idk it just made me happy
So many beautiful black women on this one video. Thanks for the motivation sis
It’s so nice to see black naturals being zero waste.
I used to go to church with Jhánneu. So happy to see that she is a zero waste content creator/influencer!
From a trichologist: "I don't believe in the porosity test"
"Porosity is a state in which the hair is with open cuticles, easily absorbing hair care products and losing their effects just as easily. Porous hair is recognizable to the touch because it feels hard and rough. It looks frizzy, rough, dry and unresponsive to grooming.
The hair begins to lose the intercellular cement responsible for the cohesion of each strand and from there the hair begins a porous state. It is much more than dry hair, it is a really serious matter that can result from chemical processes that leave the cuticle open (dyes, straightening, etc.) in general everything goes in easily and everything comes out easily.
Having clarified that point, let's talk about the porosity test. We all did it to understand how we should take care of our hair according to the need or not for protein products. I do not believe in this test because it lacks a scientific basis that proves that all the hair on your head are the same and that from just one you can properly treat all the rest of your hair. According to the test if your hair sank it is porous, in the middle it is medium porosity and if it floats it is low porosity. Actually this test does not work, several external agents can interfere with the result: the shampoo, the styling cream, the gelatin or the hair strand you choose can alter the results. If you have your hands with product remains. The type of products that you use more frequently and above all: hair cuticles are not waterproof, sooner or later that hair will sink.
That is why hair specialists identify the needs of hair by seeing it, touching it, feeling what it needs, without glasses of water.
The best thing you can do is to observe how your hair reacts to certain products and treatments, in order to understand its needs. Evaluate the hair as a whole, separating a section, touching the ends and feeling its texture. From an evaluation in general and not of a single strand of your hair to identify if it is porous or not. If it is, there is solution: 1- Treatments rich in proteins to rebuild the fiber, with acidic substances that seal and close the cuticles and 2. Haircut."
Thank you so much for this. I hope more people see this. Too many are taking about porosity and do not understand how it works.
My hair is low porosity and when I try to put water on it it just sits on top. Maybe high and mid porosity may not matter but knowing this info defo helped me.
Those last two are definitely looser than 3c 4a. they are like 3a 3b
I was thinking the same thing
Yes! I kept looking at them like either I don't know my hair type or their hair is a lot looser than mine. Cuz mine has some 3C behavior in the front but it's mostly 4a/4b and my curls aren't so big and loose.
@@lexilion16 Same! I’m like “huhh??”
That not 3a hair my hair close to there and lengths stretches curls
@@tomarasmith4459 We’re calling it by what we’re seeing. What we do know is that it’s not 3c/4a.
My hair would probably fight me if I were to try this
Lmao
I have been doing a low to zero waste hair routine for a while and honestly, it's great! there's also less build-up on my scalp and my curls are more defined too! I also make this avocado, banana, and coconut milk conditioner that is really moisturizing. I think it's a really great thing to try and there are so many things out there so you might have to try a lot before you find what works for you but once you do, it's totally worth it!
Wow! They are all so beautiful! This is what I can identify with! Not the one black model in an ad that is never allowed to have hair!
5:50 - Hyram is screaming!!!!
Thank you sooo much!! 😭😭 I was really wondering where all the girls are having curls and going zero waste with ALL the products we usually use. I thought it would be impossible. But its now 2 years with washing just natural with honey, rye flour and using oils as a mascara and thats it. My hair is so happy and even myself with my hair again.
Thanks for showing it to the world!! Our hair is not problematic, its beautiful!
I love Selorm, I think she's such a beauty.
I have been looking for low-no waste hair routines and I'm so happy to have stumbled on this video! I am so excited for this channel 😁
Love this cuz we r usually excluded from zero waste stuff. I appreciate this content (even though my hair is relaxed)!!
Hair typing is important bc it allows you to see what people with ur hair texture use and works for them. The media pushes type 3 hair when talking about natural hair and the products they use usually do not work on type 4 hair. When I first went natural, I payed attention to type 3 when I was type 4 and it was disheartening when my hair wouldn't look like theirs. It makes you think something is wrong with you, when that's not the case. Please, hair type if u are a new natural, that's how you get educated on what works for your hair. As you can see, the ones in this video preaching NOT to type it hair are type 3🙄
I think the most important thing is emphasizing that all parts are important. Porosity and density typically goes overlooked, which can lead to damaged hair if you get an overload
I agree
If someone has the same exact hair type as you, but is a different porosity, the products they use still likely won't work for you. The hair typing chart is not only inaccurate, but also barely useful at all. Once I started getting hair tips from people with the same porosity, instead of only looking at curl pattern, my hair started thriving. Also, there plenty of people who don't have type 3 hair, that think the hair chart is unnecessary.
hair typing is only necessary for styling. A sleek ponytail is going to be sleeker on a looser pattern than a tighter pattern. But in terms of health, porosity and density matter more.
@Markeli Upson I agree I don’t like the hair typing bc it just confuses ppl. Learn YOUR hair!
Love this!! The thing that changed my Low Waste hair routine was getting a Denman brush for definition and a wet brush for detangling. I know it’s plastic but they’re So sturdy, lasts forever and really distributes my product which can be a problem!
Also, slippery elm and marshmallow root added to flaxseed is the most amazing detangler and gel in one!!
Hair typing is only useful when styling, when washing/conditioning/etc hair porosity or protein sensitivity is more important
Omg I love this! I've been searching for girls like me who are eco friendly, into natural stuff. Eeep. I hope this continues
Subscribed!!
Simple, natural ingredients, already in your home. Loved this!!👏🏿👏🏿
Love seeing all of these Queens loving their natural hair. It warms my heart 🥰
That was so nice to watch, hope there is more to come.🙂.
I was really excited to see this video but I got really worried when they mention ACV for shampoo because the ACV water mix isn’t not shampoo. It is especially not strong enough to get rid of waxy build up of shea butter. I’m glad that there was a person talked about a shampoo bar and condition bar and flaxseed gel phew. But Hopefully more black owned brands get on the zero waste wave.
Yeah would be good to have some professional input to the videos. Might also help people find what might work for them rather than just using specific routines as examples.
I tried to low waste my hair routine and the detangling & good deep conditioning were impossible for me homemade so I bought from Obia Naturals. Someone mentioned that if you make your flaxseed gel too thick it will leave a film and flake which is what I experiences. And as a vegan I don’t use honey, so I’d probably purchase vegetable glycerin (usually coconut derived). But for me homemade stuff has been a struggle and time consuming. But, I’m atill working through a lot of old products so luckily I have options I’m more comfortable with and have had the best results with.
Can also use agave instead on honey and add in apple pectin
Loving this ❤️ your names make me so happy!!! Representation matters 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
The teams energy matched so well!!
this was so cool and i’m definitely going to try some of these!!!
I love this!! This video was I fun to be a part of!
this was amazing, please do more
Everyone looks soo beautiful.❤️❤️❤️❤️..I am jealouss....
I love this so much can’t wait to try this. I’ve been looking for some zero waste black girl yesss Queens.

I loooooove that this video exists this is beautiful!!!!
What a great video! Thanks for the upload. 😁
I learned so much from Jamie! I still use Shea butter all the time for my hair now.
Lol, I remember you from Small Business Entrepreneurship class at Howard. Did you ever accept that offer from Deloitte?
@@whitedaisez lol yep, and I accepted. Then a month before my start date I quit and moved to LA.
@@Viv_Nwe wow that’s interesting! I’m sure u’re doing very well now
Jhánneu def isnt 4A ..her curls look more wavy like a stretched “s” than a spiral
‼️‼️
Tree naturals has an ahhh-mazing shampoo bar and it's black owned. Gonna try the coconut mask though.
Awesome. Now to follow you all individually!
Thanks for this!
I love all the zero waste tips!!!!!!
A moisture mixture that I love is just some Greek yogurt for smoothness and some egg for protein with tea tree oil and boiled tea leaves
Honey is optional
For 4c hair try something more moisturizing like rose water mixed with equal parts vitamin e oil for a leave in conditioner (shake well) and greasing your scalp is very important. Acv can be striping and dry out the hair. Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. When you water your plants you don't water the leaves do you🤔
This was super dope !!
Yayyy! This was great 👍
Wow love this style of video 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Hair typing has nothing to do with the health of your hair and the products you should use. Your hair porosity is what determines what you should use. Using hair products for your hair because you saw another person with hair that looked like yours .. without knowing what your porosity is sometimes can do more harm then good. Not bashing anything I just think the focus here is on a vanity metric only..
also the hair typing system varies from post to post, like from what i’m seeing, those flaxseed girls (sorry i don’t remember their names) who says they were 3c/4a were NOT 4a at all and more 3a-3b
I NEEDED THIS.
Loved the video 💗
Omg I love their hair!! My dream merida-brave's hair hehe
I have that same plastic container of shea butter. I use it on my skin though not my hair.
I really love how they paired routines to hair textures! You can tell that the 4 b/c pair and one of the 3c/4a pairs were able to mimic the routines better. I think the one girl was fully 3c and didn’t have as much density of strands on her hair as the girl she was paired with. It’s cool to see side by side how routines work on different people and how each head of hair is so unique!! :)
The two girls with the loose 3b/3c hair said they were 3c/4a well dang y’all I must be 4z 🤣🤣🤣
Great tips❣️
might need to know the porosity too because I know that things like coconut can be good or bad depending on your porosity.
This was a really interesting video!
I suggest boiling the flax seeds longer and add a smidge of the solid Shea butter, not the soft kind.
I need to try that hair mask
Can you do something like this for males? My hair is such where im always confused on what to use for it.
I'm sure you can use the exact same routine! Cleaning and then conditioning is important for all hair types.
Men and women still have the same hair
🙃
green beauty is a chemist that does things on our type of hair i think shell be helpful for you
I do equal parts apple cider vinegar and aloe vera juice plus a couple of essential oil for my shampoo
Yess
they are so pretty
Can you do something like this for loc'd hair too please?
i love this ! everyone’s hair is so beautiful & natural😍🥰
I use to use shea butter when I use to do bantu knots. I shea butter!
I hope this challenge does some hair tutorial video to help people try new hairstyle or to learn how to their hair
I was looking for the conditioner for the 4c hair. My hair would dry out later with just the ACV wash.
A lot of people use honey in natural hair and skin care products although I can't. What are the best substitutes?
Beautiful names for beautiful ladies
Squeezing that flaxseed is difficult!! They make it look easy 😂
I re use those shea butter containers for my own products
Yes, who had tupperware growing up? We just re-used plastic tubs for leftovers and such.
@@recoil53 yes I even keep the really nice plastic to go plates with the lid for lunches and leftovers. "We" are the originators of reduce reuse recycle
Can we talk about the girl with the multicolored shirt and the melanin? She is BEAUTIFUL 😻 I was legit blown aback when I saw her. 🥰🥰🥰
Thanks India for creating natural shampoo ❤️
No offense but i feel like they were being dishonest. I know the vinegar DIDNT lather and thats so hard especially with curly hair and vinegar is very acidic and irritating to the skin so that will drip down their body and irritate the scalp and skin and body acne or eczema . 2 the shea butter is probably too dense for some peoples hair and although i do like the message the products aren’t efficient. 3 mask was great but hard to apply because its so runny 4 if you wanna reduce waste try going to ur local salon once a week for treatments or hair styles and use glass packaged / bar haircare ❤️❤️
So is the black version of like tasty? I’m so lost and why am I just hip love it
These women have such beautiful names
Yo I just seen this channel name, I just remembered I ain't seen or used that palmers cocoa butter in the white jar with an orange logo that smells mad good in a long ass time
I’m also a 3c-4a!
me: not knowing what type of hair i have
The only one I’ve tried is flaxseed but it flakes In my hair
My hair is 4b and I do majority of this
lmao....everything doesnt work for everybody.. just bc the number type is similar doesnt mean your hair will respond similarly.. Im low waste as well. my own oil mix. clay, apple cider vingear. Im working on finding a good leave in to replace my old one.
Finally!
I feel like the things that were used in this video, most wouldn't work for me, especially acv , that does nothing for me
You might be able to find low waste versions of what does work for you. I could not use a soap bar in my hair but have found shampoo bars that work (and can not no poo, my hair and scalp need washing, albeit gentle and ph balanced). I think the best thing for me was buying one product at a time to reduce waste.
It sucks because I’m allergic to coconut and it benefits you well
Don't use supermarket honey on your hair...Like refined coconut oil: it has been processed, the stuff you want to ac on your hair is no longer there.
Use honey straight from beekeepers.
