    Hey amigos, it's been over a week since my last video. And that's a very long time for me! So thank you for your patience. It's been a pretty crazy week. We experienced the eruption of the Volcan de Fuego, only 20KM away from Antigua. So after this happened it was a very sad time for Guatemala.... people have died and a town was completely destroyed... we are safe, don't worry, but it's still a very tough time for a lot of Guatemalans.
    If you check the description of this video I'm linking to a gofundme page where you can donate to the victims of the Volcan de Fuego tragedy. This isn't my link but it was recommended to me by a friend in Antigua, and it looks to be a good way to help. 🇬🇹

    I actually lived in Guatemala and I can say Guatemalans are super nice and warm. If you wanna have a great experience, go to Atitlan, it is very different from Antigua, the architecture isn't as old, but there is a lake surrounded by three volcanoes and bellow them you have at least fifteen different indigenous villages. You will not regret it. And when you come back to Mexico, please contact me, I live in Guadalajara, I'd love to show you some nice places ;)

      I was born in Guatemala. But now I live in Switzerland. I only can remember three visits in Guatemala with my parents. Antiga is a really beautiful city. You also have to go to the Lake Atitlán (Lago de Atitlán). Unfortunately I don't speak good Spanish. But I current learn it. One time I will go to Guatemala for a little longer time than only some weeks.

    Climbing Volcan Agua was the first adventure that I did after my arrival in Antigua in early 1989 driving my VW campervan from the top of Alaska to the bottom of Tierra del Fuego. And to watch the pyroclastic flow footage tumbling down the next volcano over at Volcan Fuego is amazing. Few tourists back then in Antigua. A stunningly beautiful Spanish Colonial town, one of dozens throughout Central and south America. Thanks for posting and bringing back the memories of this very beautiful place. My recommendation is that you continue your travels overland to Tierra del Fuego and soak in all the magnificence that is South America including not only the amazing history and culture and art but also the spectacular geology. My three years travel through there certainly has been one of my life's highlights.

    I never leave Mexico when I renew my visa. I think technically you are supposed to leave for 3 days and then you are allowed to return but, I just go directly to Immigration in Nuevo Laredo and renew without leaving. I've never had a problem.

  • @mariacelesteposadas8787
    @mariacelesteposadas8787 6 лет назад +2

    It makes me so happy that you had a great time here! If you come again, i recommend you go near to the church Nuestra Señora del Carmen. Drinking atol with tostadas or a rellenito in the afternoon is just so good. Or you can even go to the market of San Lucas to eat a lot , is a little bit closer to the city than Antigua, but it's amazing too!

  • @melissasueferrin3409
    @melissasueferrin3409 6 лет назад +48

    That church is not 800 years old. (The Spanish brought catholism to the new world.) But it's celebrating 800 years of the order of the virgen of the Merced.

    • @TheNewTravel
      @TheNewTravel  6 лет назад +8

      Ah, that's interesting! The signs are confusing then, I really thought they meant the age of the church. But of course you are right, there would have to be some time travel going on for a catholic church to be there 800 years ago haha 😅

      melissa For some reason. Your comment made me laugh. Well, I was taking my accounts with the church and the accounts did not come out. with the arrival of Catholics in America. and suddenly. I see your uncompromising comment. as if you were a great teacher. and do not allow a single error. Perhaps there is no Guatemalan here. Would you have noticed the discrepancy in the dates?

    • @MariaGarcia-zk1re
      @MariaGarcia-zk1re 6 лет назад +6

      dorianbelen Melissa is actually right. Just to share a fact, La Merced Church got constructed in the year 1749. The 800th anniversary is from the foundation of the Mercedarian Religious Order in the Old World (Europe), Antigua became founded in 1543 (475 years ago). I'm a Guatemalan tour guide and we are not "not allowing mistakes", we're just enriching the info!! :)

It's really sad that you had to experience that eruption but thank you for being understanding and so supportive with us.

  • @qualqui
    @qualqui 6 лет назад +14

    Yes Antigua is so BEAUTIFUL, really like the snapshot of that golden colored arch crossing over the street and seeing a double arch,...the reflection of the arch in the puddled water on the cobblestone street! Those tortillas looked a bit thick, for a second I thought they were gorditas, the food looked really good, but the price, hmm...back in the 80s/early 90s the quetzal was on par with the usd, but now 50 quetzales=6.70 usd? A slight depreciation in the quetzal, but doesn't affect the BEAUTY of La Hermana Republica de Quautemalan! :)

    When I saw the title and Nari on the thumbnail I thought I must have missed something. I didn't even know you were going to Guatemala, lol. But I understand now. I think you did great. It's a whole lot more fun to visit another place like Antigua than to go somewhere like Laredo and turn around and come back. It's beautiful. Love the yellow church and arch. Gorgeous. And the food looked great! I have family who has connections to Guatemala but I've never seen it. This is cool.

    Lived in Antigua 1994-96 just a couple blocks from the Parque Central and the Arco de Santa. Seems like another time, like a distant dream. One thing different I notice is the absence of hot food vendors around the park. It was dirt cheap and very good, but until you build up some immunity to the bacteria you can end up pretty miserable. Takes awhile. Watching your video brought back a lot of memories.

    I’m from Guatemala, and an architecture student. I think you didn’t see the best of Antigua. It’s a city that’s so rich in history an culture. The church that you visited is named La Merced and it’s only one of at least 20 churches that are maybe even older and more beautiful than that one. Hope you can come again and really get to know one of the best old cities in the world.

    A quick observation regarding indigenous people: our Mexican friends and neighbors have Aztec ancestry, while Guatemala has Mayan roots. Thank you and peace to all reading this. 👏💖

      I plan to spend 3 months snowbirding in the lake Chapala area, is it too long a stay, will I get bored in the end? I don't want to go sea level because my body can't stand the sweltering heat in tropical countries.

    In your plate, when you were eating fish and liked the side dish with the nice creamy sauce, that's called "Ensalada Rusa" it has cubed carrots, green beans, potatoes, peas, red bell pepper or green bell pepper raw and cubed, with mayonnaise, onions, and spices, I also may add tuna fish in small pieces, boiled egg in pieces, and half the mayonnaise and half plain yogurt to cut down the calories, add pepper and himalayan or sea salt to your taste!

      I am aware... They chose not to be part of mexico, I wonder what would happen if Simon Bolivar's dream came true and all the countries of Latin anerica were 1? ... We wouldn't depend on the kindness of monsters...

      But that will not happen. Too many divisions and differences. The Europeans hate one another despite the EU. Asians have their own prejudices. In Mesoamerica we have a vastly different history than in South America. After the Spanish arrived, we were both different viceroyalties. Quechua and the Inkas tended to dominate in South America and the Nahuatl and Maya language in Mexico/Central America.

    I just wanted to clarify that "La iglesia de la merced" in antigua guatemala is not 800 years old, I'm guessing that the order or "brotherhood" is 800 years old, the church was built in 1749. I made the same mistake when I saw that poster though,
    Being honest I was really impressed that you actually got the real experience, trying the real guatemalan food and of course getting some good coffee, I hope you have enjoyed your visit and we hope you comeback soon, greetings from Guatemala
