Years ago, before he passed, my grandad gave me a little paperback book to read about Lugs Brannigan because he was his first cousin. Amazing to come across a song about him. Great song too.

My cousin , female boxing referee, knew him. Said his prize possession was a Waterford glass set presented to him by The Ladies of the Night. He was probably the only one who looked out for them.

My late father who was a guard based in Store St. knew Lugs well and drank many a pint with him. It was street justice back in the 50's...the choice was do you want to go to court or take a beating? Most of the criminals back then took the beating though not harsh it was enough to stop them from misbehaving again. And if you beat up women or old folk or even worse fiddled with kids you would get a serious beating. Lugs had no time for feckers like that and he would find you and you would be lucky to find your balls intact afterwards. A great man but look at the cops we have now. Driving around in rainbow cars! FFS!! We need another Lugs and damn quick!

Lugs branigan was a brutal bully of travellers he bullied the wrong man when he gave my father Archie Nolan a choice he said if i beat you in a bare knuckle fight leave Dublin if you win i wont bother you anymore my father beat him in a fare fight and never had a problem with lugs again. True story
