Bill Staines - Sourdough/The Miner's Song

  • Bill Staines has been recording folk music for over 40 years. He writes most of the songs he sings, which are tales that he has woven of Americana adventures. I made this video for a medley of two of his songs, "Sourdough" and "The Miner's Song". It's about the 1899 Alaska Gold Rush. My cousin provided me with the beautiful pictures that I used during the instrumental parts at the beginning and end of the video.
This medley is from Bill's album "Wild, Wild, Heart" from 1985. The lonesome-sounding violin is played by Stuart Shulman.

Rest in peace, Bill. Died 5 December 2021. I live across the channel mentioned, over in old Juneau, where mines past and present still hold influence

One of my favorites by Bill. Today is a sad day as I learn of his passing. "One day you make two dollars, the next, you're glory bound." RIP, you wonderful folky.

I uploaded my video of this song almost two years ago. I haven't watched it since then, but I just did watch it again, and I have to say that I pretty much outdid myself, if I do say so myself. This is pretty good! OK, I'll stop patting myself on the back.

Years ago I learned this song on my banjo, from a anonymous cassette copy. It was - erroneously - attributed to Guy Clark. Due to this misapprehension, and not knowing the title of the song or Bill Staines, I never located it online. Just stumbled on it here by accident here after 25 years. What a pleasure to hear it again!

@@bbjorkyt ~ Funny because I had the same experience with hearing Bill sing 'Rooty toot toot for the moon' as a kid and it took me a 1/4 century to find the lyrics/chords and discover that it was written by Greg Brown :)

Seeing comments about his passing saddens me deeply as I just recently found his music. I live halfway across the world. And his music makes me feel like I've been to the places he sings about.
    RIP Sir.

I love this song! I couldn't find lyrics on line so I had to write them out myself, old-school. Figured out how to play the melody "Sourdough" well enough - so simple and sweet. Peaceful even. And "The Miner's Song" is a great ballad. Used to listen to Bill Staines live often when I was at Cornell, then I moved west. Miss that.

I listen to this when i view the silent mountains outisde the small, hand-drifted mine I work in. Nothin to see but snowy peaks and a small village. I love the view, and the silence when we shut down the machinery.. it's a nice thought to bear in mind when you enter the mines once again.
Blood, sweat and tears... that is how we feel the years.

You're welcome, ***** ! I even struck up an online conversation with Bill Staines to get his permission to use the music. He's a cool guy. Here's another "story" song he recorded that you might like. He didn't write this one, it was written by the legendary Tom Russell: Bill Staines - Alkali. I contacted Tom Russell, too, before making the video, to get permission and also to get the story behind the song. He shared the story, but I no longer have his message, and I've forgotten the story.

Thanks for the kind words, @Jim. This is one of the more difficult videos I have made. I was thinking "where am I going to find a picture of gold miners on the beach in Nome?" But I did. Just takes a little perseverance and ingenuity (and luck).

Awesome, Bob!! Love Bill's voice, & the story he told! Your photos of miners are incredible, where ever did you find them? You must have searched for hours on end! And loved all your color photos of Alaska, especially the Polar Bear and the 2 Caribou with the Aurora Borealis, & the mountains with lakes
& trees, wow wee! And the log cabin in the snow @ night, so cold & pristine.
Thank you for making this old timey video, the music & solos were so fine!!

There's strange things done 'neath the midnight sun by the men who moil for gold, but the strangest thing that I ever did see was that night on the marge of lake lafarge when they cremated Sam Mcgee. Now Sam Mcgee was from Tennasee...

In my youth, I memorized numerous Robert Service poems; they're such fabulous stories! If you get an opportunity- read "the Ballad of the Northern Lights". It's nearly 10 pages- but it's incredible what a storyline- as well as what a wordsmith Service was in his un-matched ability to describe the lights and the scenes!

+Larry Games Ooh, sonically those two songs go together wonderfully. Thematically, though, they don't match. But I do love "Tecumseh Valley"; I may take that one into consideration for a video. I've also got a few Kate Campbell songs lined up for videos; her songs have such imagery.
