Late in the game but figuring out the rules...and as you say, "there are no rules! " After 59 years of 6 string I bought a 3 string summer of 2019.I got a Puckett next and now I have my first 4 string as of today. You have been with me through this journey. I thank you for this!!I do want a slide and a couple of shirts but I need my wife's help in this as I am visually impared and numbers are difficult (and she has the bank card. ) This should happen soon. 4 string lessons have me playing the blues! Thanks again.
thank you for this, and your contribution to "Cigar Box Guitars" by David Sutton. I recently finished my fifth build, a 4 string, 26 inch scale, resonator plectrum banjo made from my dogs dish from when he was a pup. Yet tonight, i was asked to jam with some old friends and could only reply "i'm a drummer, i just build these things." then i recognized your name and read the article in the aforementioned book. it was precisely what i needed to hear. i will destroy the rules. thank you again.
Wow, thank you! I just pull of the first and the sixsth string from my guitar, and tuned her on G-D-G-B, sounds awesome. I think i gonna buy the Cigar Box =)
Shane, I used this simple little G-C-D chord progression of yours to demo a 4-string cbg on RUclips and it sounds great. Thanks for the on-going mentoring you do.
I have been agonizing over whether to build a 4 string Bariton-ish Ukelele Cigar Box or straight up guitar - your demo here has me leaning more toward the guitar. I am assuming the open G tuning and chording would be the same on either one? AWESOME Tutorial - thanks for helping people out - its much appreciated on various levels Im sure.
I'm not completely finished with my second 3 string guitar. I've got ideas for about 4 more, and now I want to build a 4 string. I can't really play anything that even sounds like a song yet.
hey Shane could you do a 4 string lesson on a grungy sound ? i built a 4 stringer but it just sounds too pretty . Im getting fed up and about to rip the 4 string off .
I found the musice stores sell 6 sting sets with a wound G string, these sets are great for 4 string guitar. Just ask for a jazz guitar string set with 4 wound strings.
shane I noticed that you call the lowest string "the last string". I understood that in all stringed instruments the "FIRST STRING" is always the LOWEST or the string closest to the palm of your hand. please correct me if I`m wrong. good video.
elpayin1 Can't say which way is arbitrarily "correct " , but vertical guitarists number their strings opposite from dobro and steel players . And then to further mix it up , dobro and steel plays refer to their tunings in opposite directions . ( Dobroists will always refer low to high , steelers usually high to low .)
Thanks for all the cool videos you have put up. Do you know where I can find a chart on chords for a 4 string guitar. Trying to learn chords on a 4 string cbg tuned to open G. Thanks bud!
If you are putting them on a guitar with magnetic pick-ups it's better to use electric strings, though I have used acoustic in a pinch and they work okay as long as your gauges are what you want. Using electric strings on an acoustic is fine as long as your gauges are right as well. As far as gauges go it depends on your scale length and personal preference. If you like low tension or have a long scale length you might want to use smaller gauges. If you like more tension or have a short scale length you might want to use larger gauges. Here's a string tension calculator that I like to use. wahiduddin.net/calc/calc_guitar_string.htm The confusion doesn't end there though. There are also different materials that strings are made from, each provide variations on tone.
Depends was string you used. They are intended to be EADGBE. So if you are using the Lowest 4 you are using EADG tuned to GDGB. Changing a D to a G shouldn't be that hard.
I am confused by your none standard numbering. The strings are normally numbers 4G 3D 2G 1B 4321 you seem to use 1234. Ok when you suss it out but really none standard.
Del Puckett has done a lot to popularize open E tunings. All of this is good. People are finding their own voice, their own style and their own identities in the instruments they've built
@@ShaneSpeal thanks for the reply Shane I appreciate that and yes I totally agree im a little late to the party I only discovered cbgs last year so still getting used to gdg tuning im on my 3rd build already and having so much fun btw iv learnt so much of of your video keep doing what u do
Yes, then you have a baritone uke tuning and use its cords shapes. If you lower the E to D then you have a five string banjo tuning without the fifth short string and it will be in a open G tuning.

Thank you Shane I’ve just got my first CBG four string and I’m loving it 👍
Thank you for this, I play tenor guitar tuned GDAE. Was real easy to go to GDGB and try this out. First thing I learned in the new year:-)
Funny....I tuned my CBG to tenor! Totally new sounds for me.
Great tips, finishing my first cbg, 4-string "tele" style. We'll keep in touch.

Hi Shane I’m building a 4 string guitar with 20 inch scale which are best strings of the 6 to use for open G regards Steve

What are the 3 chords in the run down if you are playing with a slide? I'm a beginner, with an open D 4 string, but can transpose easily.
great, made me pick up one of my four stringers which get a bit neglected : -)
Thanks, that was what I was looking for!
Excellent
Thank you! Just got a 4-string
I went DGBE on mine like a baritone uke

Very thanks for your videos. One question, Type of string, acoustic or electric? What is the best option and why?

inspirational to a primitive like me...Thx SS!
What's the 3rd chord ? It's not a D the single tones G-D-a'-c' or not ???
Hi, i cant get 3rd string to be a G. Is it a really loose G or is it going to be waaaaay tense?

Nice thrxss , I'll have to try !

uke tuning ?
+Imade Pawitra Uke is generally tuned to GCEA rather than GDgb
Seem to be alot more videos of 4 string cbgs and every one going over to ebe tuning on 3 strings
