It was accused of racism. Okieriete Onaodowan (better known as Oak), the guy who was in Hamilton, replaced Josh Groban as Pierre on July 11, 2017 (I think this was to drive up ticket sales). When the show began to struggle with finances, celebrity Mandy Patinkin was planned to replace Oak in August. Now, fans were upset about this announcement because the arrival of Mandy (a white actor) would have forced Oak (a black actor) to cut his run a lot shorter. Mandy left the casting two days after the announcement caused controversy (he left before he got to play Pierre). I think Oak left too as a result of the controversy but I don't know. Dave Malloy (the creator of this musical and the original Pierre before the show opened on Broadway) assumed and finished the role for its final set of performances until it closed in September of that year. He originated the role of Pierre and he also finished it. So to sum it all up, this show closed because people thought it was racist since a white actor was replacing a black actor. The controversy started on July 26 (when Mandy replacing Oak was announced) and the show closed a little over a month later on September 3.
To everyone who caused this show close, those who caused multiple actors and actresses of color to be put out of work, those who killed a groundbreaking show: *_DISHONOR ON YOU, DISHONOR ON YOUR COW..._* (I’m just gonna stop here. Mushu didn’t have time to curse anyone else.)
In a perfect world, this, “Dear Evan Hansen” and “Come From Away” (both are in my top ten favorite musicals) would have all tied for Best Musical. But alas, we do not live in a perfect world.
i got to see this show in march and my god......the cast album and the small clips don't even come CLOSE to doing the show justice. the show is so interactive and you feel like you're part of the show rather than just watching it.
Petition to bring this show back to Broadway with the original staging and set and lighting design, and perhaps give Mandy Patinkin his fair shot at playing Pierre... ↓
I traveled by 11 hours by car from Michigan to New York to see this two weeks ago and it was absolutely stunning! I'm already dying to go back and see it again. It was hands down the most incredible theatrical experience I have ever had. I saw Hamilton last June, and I liked this show more. I cannot praise it highly enough!!
I saw this when I visited New York and it was absolutely astonishing. Honestly so amazed by the cast and crew, you all made this elaborate show so magical.
Please, just promise me, WHEN you guys go on tour, you'll come to Southwest Florida so I can see this. Please, I need this more than Hamilton, Paramour, and Tuck Everlasting COMBINED. I already know I'll spring for the on stage seats.
So glad I got to see the show when it came to Berkeley a week ago. I've waited so long for it to appear again. Here's hoping this sparks a revival of some sort!
Coffee Jaytee Are you Coconuts Both Shows are done by the Same Director Rachel Chavkin ( I Was Referring To Her) . She deserved the Tony for Directing the Comet and She Lost So Hadestown Which is also Directed by her I hope she wins the Tony this time #RachelChavkinfortheTony
It's an insult to theatre how quick this shut down
I am going to SELL MY SOUL for this blessed show to come back
Me TOO
And now I'm crying because this show was full of promise and was just shut down for awful reasons. Just...crap man Comet deserved better
Why was it shut down?

Marya D has the perfect lyrics to describe everyone who boycotted and defamed the show: “gossips and crybabies.”

@@jakegriffin6360 I hate to make this political, but it was leftists and cancel culture. It's a shame a show this good was prematurely cancelled.

this is literally the best show
Is it wrong if I'm obsessed with those 3 Russian words Lucas Steele speaks in the beginning.
hun that's not lucas
That is Josh Groban counting 1,2,3 in Russian, my dude
I think it's the conductor, it doesn't sound like josh

Ahhh...The good old days where people stood together in the same room...
If this doesnt win best musical im done with the tonys
zack I'm done with Broadway and it's people if it doesn't. Except for Phillipa Soo. Shes acceptable
I'm certain Dear Evan Hansen will win
It's either Dear Evan Hansen or The Great Comet of 1812
This has high chances of winning though
Thats Amore i think DEH deserves best actor and best book, but score, director and overall musical should all go to comet 💫
Rip Great comet, you were robbed, I hope for a revival

#GreatCometfortheGrammyAward
im going to say it.... THE GREAT COMET OF 1812 IS BETTER THAN HAMILTON AND IS THE BEST MUSICAL
Baguettei In my opinion they are equal. They are both amazing in different ways. To each their own though.
They also share a lot of elements
