The bitter irony is that both supersonic airliners met their fate in the vicinity of Le Bourget. Tu-144 in Goussainville in 1973 and Concorde in Gonesse in 2000. Only 2 km apart from each other.
To be accurate, the 144 'met its fate' when it crashed again in Moscow in 1978. The final straw for Corcordski's protectors. Also, in reality, 9/11 was the final straw for Concorde, not the DC-10 induced crash of the Air France Concorde in 2000.

@@stuartmiller7419 To be even more accurate, if you look at the details (which Air France largely successfully kept out of the crash report) Air France itself and the actions of the flight crew on that fateful day were probably as much a factor in the Concorde crash as the metal strip left on the runway by the DC-10. John Hutchinson's examination of the accident is probably the most detailed, knowledgeable, impartial and trustworthy account available.

Robin Olds is an impressive exception which is why he's famous. While serving in the USMC I taught a motorcycle defense driving course. A well known adage is "You've either gone down or you're going down". Obviously it is meant to inspire alertness, sobriety, and respect for the vulnerability and conditions while riding.

Many, seemingly, just forget details while under stress and perform otherwise proper actions out of order. Those who survive most usually learn from the mistakes of others.
Yea. I used to want to be a fighter pilot or a test pilot or an astronaut growing up, always wanting to be on the pushing edge. Then life got in the way.
Then youtube comes out.
Then I watch things like Adam Air 574 CVR.
The realization of "ok these are man made things prone to stress and repetitive use" starts to sink in.
Then i realize, I'm really really glad I didn't follow my childhood dreams. Should still get back into general aviation though, I miss flying.

There was a bug in the software that caused the sudden dive, because they had never tested the plane without the 5 degree limitation in place. Poor management was the issue, not the flying.... probably.
Fun Fact: both the Tupolev and the Concord are displayed behind each other on the roof of the "Technik Museum" Sinsheim, Germany. As seen in 13:34, an actual photo from the said Tupolev, you are able to go inside said aircrafts.

Soviet/Russian pilots have been providing high drama and spectacle to the air show circuit for years with their over-the-top display routines. I personally witnessed an An-32 crew perform a touch and go with one engine feathered-downwind at that, and an An-72 crew roll their wings well past vertical pulling out of a low pass. The Su-27 display that followed, flown by no less than Viktor Pugachev, was spectacular but those two transport category aircraft routines were downright scary. The Soviets can blame the French Mirage all they want but this Tu-144 crash was another case of a hold-my-beer moment going terribly sideways.

What was wrong with that? You're talking as if the west didn't harbour that kind of mentality of beating USSR at all cost - if you still think the Mirage jet fighter was chasing Russian TU-144 concordisk for simply taking photo of the canard, you better think twice - the rivalry between French/
British built Concorde and Russian TU-144 were so great - west would have attempted anything under the SUN to sabotage Russian built TU-144 - mirage fighter jet crossing suddenly in front of TU-144 flight path was deliberate done to cause an accident.
This wasn't just during the cold war, it was pretty much always like this with Russians.
The problem isn't that those Soviets died trying, but that they maimed and killed innocent civilians on the ground when they crashed their plane. They were demonstrating all the maturity of teenage boys given the keys to a high-performance car, and the results were predictable. The story about the Mirage fighter somehow being to blame is a smokescreen - the Soviets own this tragedy.
You know what's funnier? Boeing could only Bill us for the 2707. It never left the ground.

6 years after that crash I started going to junior high school. One of my classmates there told me that his father was a volunteer fireman and that he was called of this particular day of 1973 to assist the wounded. What he saw wasn't pretty but he never told much.
Probably seen some gnarly burnt up body parts 🤮 that's why I can never do first responder work.

I was there. I was a child and my father and I were unfortunately able to experience this tragedy live.
I even recovered a small piece of metal, it was everywhere because it disintegrated in flight.
So sorry you had to witness that.

and it's not like it's 2 companies.. it's the East vs. West in the middle of the Cold War... They should have both agreed to fly a similar, fun yet tame pre-agreed upon flight route to avoid any issues like this.

I wish I’d travelled on Concorde before it went out of service. Where I lived in the UK we would get the sonic boom rattle the windows twice a day. Some people even lost roof tiles! Amazing aircraft 🖤

I didn't even know this plane disentegrated in mid-air, horrifying... At least only 6 people perished (and 8 on the ground), because, if it crashed into a more populated area and had passengers, the casulties could've been *much worse* .

sadly the flight channel did not due their true to form video depiction of the mid air disintegration but instead inaccurately showed the Tu nosing into the ground. Very disappointing and not their usual manner of truly representing an aircraft failure, crash or collision.

My respects to the people of Goussainville. I live near Shoreham, Sussex which saw its own (avoidable) air crash disaster.
Also sadly a Concorde crashed at Paris CDG in 2000. Air France 4590.

1) Aircraft crash has to be extinguished and searched for survivors.
2) Multiple houses on fire that need to be extinguished and searched for victims.
3) Medical treatment and transport for all those on the ground injured as well
4) Weeks long on scene investigating what happened and what went wrong.

They lived directly next to an airport hosting an air show, I would suspect that anyone in the town who was not at work would have been sitting in their gardens watching a free air show with a glass of wine. Of all of the people in towns and cities that have had planes crash into and kill them the occupants of Goussainville were likely the least surprised in history to watch that aircraft coming towards them...

I mean there were people severely injured on the ground.
I live very close to Heathrow, and remember as a teenager in 1981, observing the Concorde coming in to land at Heathrow, with a low pass over our buildings. The windows and doors used to shake; but what an amazing sight to behold as it passed over.

There are a TU 144 and a Concorde at the Sinsheim Technical Museum, Germany. Both well mounted to show their elegance. You can see both planes from the motorway. Good old memories, dear TFC! Thanks for another brilliant video.

Peter, that is a fantastic museum! We really enjoyed visiting, and my primary reason was to see the TU-144. Ah, but there was so much more. We spent hours there, and wished we had more time!

I hope people will recall that the members of the flight crew were human beings and had families, friends and loved ones. This was hardly the first, and likely not the last plane to go down in an airshow, so, as the Aviation industry is so fond of saying, "We learn from our mistakes."
Soviet or Western, the Concorde/TU-144 were both beautiful planes, and there's as much to be learned in how they did things differently, as there is in their similarities.

Seeing those vids reassures me. Everything you see here is a mistake / oversight that will not repeat (or is, at least, extremely unlikely to). The current high level of safety of air travel is built on these mishaps.

The video failed to mention that the French shortened the performance time of the Tu-144 in order to reduce its presence compared to the Concorde.

I knew about the Concorde but somehow never knew about the existence of Tupolev TU-144, so I am really glad to have seen this video and learn about this heartbreaking tragedy. Both planes were of stunning design and magnificently beautiful. It truly is very sad to see that beautiful plane crash. It doesn't matter what country it belonged to, it was quite an achievement for aviation in general. Yes, maybe there was cockiness and arrogance that day but let us not forget human lives were lost and many others injured. Thank you Flight Channel for bringing this story to us. A bit of history I didn't know about.
It's sad that the Concorde isn't around anymore. I can't imagine going from the US to London in a couple of hours.

@Mike Gervasi I can’t imagine who would NEED to go from the US to London in 2 hours…except maybe the rich and famous for whom money is no problem and who love to flaunt their wealth. “Hey look at me, I’m a movie star and I can afford to spend several thousand dollars to get to London a few hours faster.” I love airplanes just as much as the next guy…but supersonic air travel proved itself to be impractical and unaffordable except for the one-percenters.
With a price of a car or even a house by today's money. We are still hoping the next gen supersonic flight with more reasonable fuel consumption so the fare would not be too high and still affordable by the majority not only from a jetset club of people

One of the rare few 144's is right outside my window - a monument in the front yard of the Kazan Aviation Institute. I look at it everyday - its truly magnificent.

You just can't fly an airliner--any airliner--like a fighter plane.
The simpler wing design made the aircraft less stable at slow speed. The cannards were designed to compensate, but a technical glitch caused them to incorrectly deploy after the angle limiter was disengaged.
If the Soviets hadn't disabled the 5 degree cannard limiter, and the pilot hadn't tried to fly the airliner like a MiG, the crash wouldn't have happened. 🤦
To the soviets, they must be bigger, tougher, bolder and stronger, and if they die, they do so with the honor Mother Russia

Technically we now know what really happened,it wasn't a design flaw - Russian Pilots and Engineers were very eager to impress the spectators consequently they disabled a very critical mechanism controlling canard angle ending up exceeding allowable angle which resulted the plane to stall.
Tell that to the Soviets, who had a habit of turning their bombers into airliners (including the TU-95 itself) and generally acting like Kerbals (An-225, anybody?)

The TU-144 did however serve successfully as an air mail aircraft for some time, and one was leased for use by NASA to research super sonic properties in the twilight of it's service history.

@@naulahka1 He means survived. The thing was noisy, thirsty and i think generally disliked. I bet the wing design records were at Bristol,so didn't fall into spy hands. Russia had to second guess the wing design. Shows by adding the canard and couldn't super cruise.

Pilot error is the most common cause of crashes both being cocky in risky conditions, forcing a plane beyond its design, or just being complacent.
Never be complacent and know your conditions as limitations.

Good idea. I remember that there once was on RUclips a video of the actual aircraft a few minutes after it crashed. It was still smoking a lot. Appaeared some gruesome sights : I remember there was, in the grass, a woman's forearm, without the rest. In what was the fuselage, you could see a male (?) passenger, still strapped in his seat, entirely incinerated, only his teeth were shining under the sun after his whole flesh was charred to pitch black. Man, that was painful to watch. Of course, RUclips has removed this footage since. I guess it was shot by locals on VHS cassettes.

Cpt Eric Winkle Brown, arguably greatest UK pilot, died aged 97. Look him up, his life is the stuff of legend

@Arc Anon Drum quit whining like a B1TCH on every post. There never was a Boeing 2707. No taxpayer money was spent on it either. Both prototypes were canceled before completion . Only a mockup was ever built. Funding was withdrawn and the prototype work remained unfunded.

My father was at the Paris air show that year and knew the crew of the TU-144 quite well. He was scheduled to be on the demo flight during the show.
The day before the flight, they told him they were having some problems and had to cancel his being on that flight. He had a brochure of the TU-144 signed by the entire crew the day before they died.
That's sad, scarey, and ultimately a remarkable twist of fate for your father, you, and your family. Wow!

Wow, another great video, thanks. Eventually the Concorde also crashed after taking off in France,very sad day, and although the Concorde flew again, its days were numbered.
The frontal video of the Concorde in flight looks like a giant bird of prey.
Sadly I never got to fly Concorde, but I did at least board one, it was tiny inside compared with modern day long haul wide body planes.
I take it they went out of business because passengers got spooked from taking flights on it from the crash or because of general business failings? I would assume the latter.
@@IntrovertedOreo There were many reasons why the fleet was taken out of service, but it was still popular with those who could afford it. I recall that Virgin wanted to take over the fleet from BA, but BA declined.
The planes wer quite old, very expensive to operate, fuel and maintenance. They were also very noisy, which limited their routes, and they were very limited in the seats.
For many years the US refused the Concorde permission to fly because of the noise.

What's more, I bet the Concorde crew knew what was likely going to happen. They understood what a jet like this could reasonably withstand. An absolute tragedy out of the Soviets' pure recklessness and desire to outperform.

@@oogie493 but the concept was stolen from Concorde. The soviets used cheaper materials to make this aircraft just so that they would come first in making the first supersonic passenger jet.

Read repeatedly that the Concord never made money and in fact always operated at a loss but was kept in service courtesy of Fench/UK subsidies.
Towards end operated at profit, but the airlines were given the aircraft.

Live footage of this incident is pretty widespread. Just look up "TU-144 Crash" should find several examples, even if a lot of it is the SAME footage.

A controversial caption indeed. By whose criteria was it "mediocre"? Perhaps it was just 'normal' and 'within safety parameters'.
Concorde’s flight might have been “mediocre” but those pilots lived to see another day. It’s mind numbing how many pilots throughout the history of aviation have pushed large aircraft beyond their performance parameters and crashed as a result. “Just wait until you see us fly. Then you’ll see something”. That’s a hold my beer moment and those never end well.

A classic case of the pilot saying, "Hey, watch this!" Quickly followed by "Oh SHIT!!!"
Never knew that those little wings were retractable.
Sadly, the pilots broke their aircraft due to excessive mechanical constraints. Some remarks:
First: unlike what it's said in the video the presentation of the Concorde was "fighter style" and not that bad according to specialists.
Second: there was for sure a tremendous pressure on the Tupolev pilot to impress everybody.
Third: I know the story of the Mirage chasing the Tu144: it seems that a Mirage was indeed in the area, according to radar recordings, but not that close to trigger a violent reaction from the Tupolev which would have caused the crash. The witnesses have never seen any Mirage: if it was a near-miss event, it would have been visible, even on the films showing the crash. At last "photographing the plane's canards" doesn't make any sense: this chase plane should have been very close which was not the case and why photographing something that was even visible at close range and during the presentation using a telephoto lens? Anyway R.I.P for all crew members and the fatalities on the ground

The crash had shocked 250,000 people including Aleksei Tupolev, the man responsible for designing the supersonic aircraft!!!

Only thing I can think of was that something about the design or deployment of the canards that could only be seen when the TU-144 was airborne. Otherwise the French Mirage had no reason to be up there.
@@deanladue3151 You're right but nobody said that the Mirage were there "because of the Tupolev" ... and even though, to see something "interesting" about the canards he would have been obliged to fly in close formation and that's not what happened. That's the main point: I obviously don't know all the cold war dirty tricks but I really don't see what information could have been obtained from a fighter in the middle of an airshow, including with regards to the canards which were not a national secret.
Note that there are some airbases not that far from Paris from which a Mirage could have just flown a mission without any relation with the Paris Air Show. There was also a Test Centre in Brétigny, not very far from Le Bourget where the operations were not frozen: the country doesn't stop every two years because of this event.
Last but least: the Soviets were spying the Concorde, not the other way around. Regarding the canards they have not even been contemplated for the Concorde which didn't need them due to a better design of the wings. Indeed the aim of the canards was to compensate the bad behaviour of the Tupolev wings at low speeds since they were optimized for supersonic flight. This was not the case at all on the Concorde.
Last assumption: a mistake from "a" Mirage unaware that he was on a collision course with the Tupolev ... Well: military operations were not stopped in France but even the stupidest man in the area would have been aware of the Paris Airshow and ... not a fighter pilot?
Anyway I'm just very sceptical about the idea that, should a Mirage have flown in the area, it would have been so close to the Tupolev to be the cause of the accident, nothing more.
By the way, ask yourself the question: who had the most interest in this "Mirage hypothesis"?
@@patolt1628 it's also a good bet that intelligence agencies from other countries (CIA, MI-6) were in attendance at the demonstration, and were also seeking information on the TU-144s canards. Another possible reason the Mirage was in the area. It's also interesting that both French and Soviet governments worked in conjunction to keep any additional information being made public.
Vision of the Tu-144 flying reminds me of the old adage " just because you can doesn't mean you should", the consequences show that vividly.

Them Soviets had gotten a bit over-confident in their structural processes. The TU-144 sure had some cockpit window blockages. Something always looked off about this plane to me (must be those mustache things). I bet the Russian designer in the crowd knew the pilots were over-stressing the airframe. Damn shame.

Another one bites the dust - hubris got him. It was the height of the cold War and the Soviets were in a bruising competition with the west especially in the defence and space fields. The Russians beat the Americans with the Sputnik but the Americans overtook them eventually to the moon. The Concordski was a compromised version of the Anglo-French aircraft. The noise level inside the plane was so high you had to write notes to communicate with your co-passengers. The aircraft was bigger and heavier because of the heavier components due to inferior Russian metallurgy.
Quite. The Russian 'design' had none of the finesse of the Anglo-French aircraft. Relying more on brute force and power to get it through the air quickly (as was often the case with Russian military aircraft of the period, MiG-25 for example). It was more hammer, compared to Concorde's knife.
The Flight Channel is the only responsible and educated channel for accident and crash reports . The rest of those which I have seen , are amateur by comparison and irresponsible. IMO . I am very grateful to TFC and hugely appreciate the detailed work, time and effort which clearly goes into the videos. A very big …thank you.

The way that rear landing gear comes down on the 144 is interesting, that can’t have been the initial design so I wonder what problem was solved by designing it like that.
Prototype 144 had all four engines together in a single fairing with the landing gear outboard IIRC. Not sure why the landing gear couldn't have been moved further outboard when the engines were split. Outer wing not strong enough maybe? Or just not thick enough to house the gear?
