- This essay by Langston Hughes explains, in great detail, the atmosphere of black society and culture at that time and provided an important rallying cry for the beginning of what became known as the Harlem Renaissance. Hughes was one of the most important figures in the Harlem Renaissance, and while he was known mostly for his poetry, he was also an intellectual who wrote essays even from a pretty early age. When he wrote this essay, he was 25 years old.
Note: I censored the use of a certain N-word that is in the original text because I didn't want any possibility of RUclips to taking down this video. So I replaced it with "Negro," which I think is an acceptable substitute since it was very commonly used at that time by black intellectuals to describe their own race.
I've only heard Langston Hughes in the past few years courtesy of the LBGTQ movement and his struggle. What power, what words, and what strength can be found through this amazing man. Finding him on your channel has been a blessing to my day. Thank you
Powerful words about assimilation and identity. Langston Hughes was a brilliant man.
Langston-Timeless. Thank you for presenting this!
I'm in a grad program for writing studies in an upper middle class lib environment. I feel like Mr. Hughes was addressing me directly. Thanks for the great reading 💖
I honestly am thankful I'm playing in a call of cthulu campaign, set in the 1920s. Because if I wasn't, i wouldnt have found this channel.
I'm absolutely fascinated with Langston Hughes. I just saw a good play/ musical about him. An amazing fellow Aquarian.
"Father is often dark, but he has married the lightest woman he can find"
Now, tell me that is not what is still going on.
ikr! black men still be getting lighter skinned/biracial girls if they not with White girls altogether! So true 96 years later...

Well Read. Powerful words.
It’s hard to believe that
Langston had such a jaundiced view of his own class…how many of them did he know personally?
He saw them for what they were.

Very interesting! I wanted to ask whether the final image has anything to do with the straw hat riot? They all seem to be wearing them, was that in defiance or is it just coincidence?
