As soon as I heard the name Simon Wessley my heart sank. He has far too much power and is unable and unwilling to change his opinions in relation to new information and research. His (and others) research study in to ME/CFS formed what were the NICE guidelines for the disease. In the last few years he has been discredited and proven to have changed the parameters of the study to get the results he and others wanted, causing harm to thousands of people in the process.
As regards to your conversation and as someone who works with children with additional needs some of whom also have an ADHD diagnosis, I think it’s important to raise awareness, understanding and reduce the stigma and misunderstanding that still exists. Thank you for continuing to talk about this and other important issues on your channel ❤

ADHD presents differently in females and that is why so many people have been missed. As usual when women come forward, armed with the knowledge and recognition of symptoms, exactly the same as with the menopause, there aren't the resources or medication to help them. I understand the NHS is under pressure but this is peoples lives and it's not fair that it always seems to fall short for women. Personally, I am very grateful to these brave celebrities who shine a light on important issues.

My grandson has ADHD. We could see how differently he acted at home school as well as being out playing from as little as 2 years old. He was diagnosed 3 years ago with ADHD aged 6. You are Spot on Nadia & Mark when you say it's a day drug, his lasts for 8 hours and bless him when it wears off, You can see the agony in his face as he struggles to contain himself. People, schools are not aware of the pain ADHD causes children along with their families. You see people judging children who are energetic, distracted and over chatty with complete strangers. He often cries saying how stupid he is. He is the most loving, caring straight talking little boy I've ever known. So people please don't jump to conclusions and judgements without knowing the facts. Of ADHD, it's real!
Thank you Nadia & Mark for getting information out there. Keep going please

Thanks for making the point about self diagnosis...I've been in the system for 8 months and probably have another 18 months to go before my ADHD/autism assessment. I hope that never changes.

Of course ADHD exists, as Nadia says -if someone who is neuro typical takes ADHD meds the effect will be the opposite to those experienced by someone with ADHD. Surely that’s scientific proof ADHD is real! Its depressing that this is even still being debated! ADHD meds changed my son’s life and I have no doubt the cost to society of undiagnosed ADHD is huge! Thanks for speaking about this - I wish more people approached this topic with the same compassion that you both do. I agree about privilege playing a role - it's always the privileged people who are the ones who will moan about the awareness but the ones who aren't are the ones who are told to just get on with their life 🤷‍♀ The brain needs the same attention and help as the body and I think awareness about ADHD will always be so important and life-changing. It would be considered an outrage if this article was written regarding physical health problems and I feel concerned with the fact that it was written by a psychiatrist!

Ellie Middleton summed it up very well in her video about this article, it shouldn't be a case of 'wow look at how many people are being diagnosed' it should be a case of 'wow look at how many people have been failed'. There's such a stigma for women and girls when talking about neurodiversity, there's a lack of resources and research for women and girls, hence a number of them receiving a late diagnosis. People talking about conditions on social media is something that is accessible, self diagnosis is sometimes all some people have. Waiting times for assessments can be a number of years, and in that time they can struggle immensely, accessing an assessment, diagnosis and treatment is a privilege! In the meantime, the communities that have been created online are all some people have, and sometimes that can be reassuring. I could go on and on about this!

My therapist said it’s highly like I have trauma based ADHD (basically, trauma based ADHD presents most often as having to constantly have an onslaught of thinking, thinking, thinking… because any silence in your head leads to being deeply uncomfortable) this also causes me to find multiple tasks to do every time I go to sit down and “relax” 🤣 I have it in addition to OCD and cPTSD… it’s a nightmare 🤣 my therapist absolutely didn’t diagnose anything to push pills because she knows I don’t want to take any, she just very clearly wants to help me in a way that works for me :)

It’s an emotional dystregulation disorder where we get overwhelm. Adhd minds will seek dopamine- therefore if it’s not substituted with prescribed medication the person will get it from other addictions be it sex, stealing things, drink, drugs food etc.
A big percentage of undiagnosed ADHD people end up in prison for these addictions with their kids in care. So yes it’s cheaper and safer in the long run to be diagnosed and given medication.

I agree with what you have said however, sadly I do know of some people who actively seek labels and diagnosis who haven't got the MH issue. These individuals have admitted they have done it to fit in, be part of something, get out of something and in some instances receive benefits. I'm hopeful that these individuals are in the minority but it's frustrating that people do this as it minimises those who do have the issue and can takes away the severity of it.

I think what you said Mark, people are looking and striving with great stress for some explanation for why they’re feeling like they’re feeling and doing what they’re doing, a lot of people are quite vulnerable to what they hear and take to heart everything that is said, which starts a whole load of extra worries for them, when really that’s not what’s wrong with them at all, sometimes too much information is a bad thing, we need to watch what we say and who we are saying it to, it’s a vicious cycle, and then there’s the ones that really aren’t well and need the help.....

Wesley has done so much damage and caused so much suffering... By choosing to disbelieve thousands of ME sufferers' accounts of their illnesses he's pressurised them - espec children, many v weak and bed-ridden - to partake in unsuitable, often dangerous, treatments eg. exercise therapy, resulting in many people's condition worsening, some becoming permanently disabled and having to deal with sev pain. I, myself, was told to follow Wesley's treatment method by a GP years ago - thankfully NICE have banned it now - and the suffering over the years has/still is indescribable... Wesley is someone who seems to think he knows more about how the patient feels than the patient themselves do. And of course he has a lot of power and when he abuses this power the consequences can be devastating..... I'm just sorry he's now doing his best to trivialise the real and distressing mental health symptoms so many people with ADHD are experiencing.

The reality is that professions such as psychiatry and psychology are only around 150 years old. That’s nothing compared to the age of mainstream western medicine. These people are very far from experts on mental health. In the not too distant past they where lobotomising women who weren’t submissive to their husbands or applying electric shock
Therapy or scalding hot baths as treatment for homosexuality. Freud the Godfather of psychoanalysis was an opium addict who, rather than believe the victims incestous abuse - which his female clients where disclosing to him, Freud formulated an entire theory to suggest these women where suffering from envy of the male penis. Psychiatry and Psychology are relatively young professions with little
Clue at all concerning what they are doing to people. There is NO science behind most psychiatric diagnoses. None whatsoever. Ten psychiatrists could in theory, diagnosis one person with ten different diagnoses and there are studies to
Show this. There is no scientific rigour whatsoever behind the subjective criteria for psychiatric illnesses. I am not saying that mental illnesses do not exist. I am myself an OCD sufferer. I diagnosed myself before the professionals because the professionals where not up-to-date with their understanding of the condition. It’s important to remember that just because someone got good grades at aged 18 in their science A-Levels and slogged through a medical degree in their early twenties, this does not mean that they have any critical thinking skills or empathy whatsoever and aren’t infact a robot advocating whatever the profession says they should do at that time. Recent history shows us, these actions have often been barbaric. We need to remember this.
