  • Discover the story of the Sycamore Gap tree, a cherished landmark nestled beside Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland. Planted in the late 1800s, this iconic tree became famous after its stunning photography and appearance in the film "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves," earning it the nickname the Robin Hood Tree. However, in September 2023, tragedy struck as the tree was deliberately chopped down, devastating the community and sparking an outpouring of emotion.
Despite the loss, hope prevails as the National Trust, along with the Northumberland National Park Authority, has taken action. Seeds and cuttings collected from the tree are being used to grow new saplings, with new life already sprouting. Plans are in place to display the largest section of the tree at The Sill, a nearby visitor attraction, in September 2024. Additionally, efforts are underway to rejuvenate the area around the stump, with funds raised for improvements.
Though the loss of the Sycamore Gap tree is felt deeply, the resilience of the community and the dedication of the National Trust ensure that its legacy will endure for generations to come.

How could someone be that cruel to cut down a tree out of pure spite, i mean i understand using nature to survive but this was senseless and just to cause maximum misery to people for nothing more than self gratification
I despair of individuals sometimes, just why 🤬
To everyone involved in the team to plant new siblings i say thank you and im looking forward to seeing the monument and new attraction that replaces the tree it any 👍🙂

I could almost understand if someone who just didn't know what it was got lost and needed firewood or something, but people really are nonsensical sometimes. To destroy something special simply because it's special is something I can't wrap my head around.

The root system of this tree will still be very much alive and capable of supporting very rapid regrowth - it is by no means dead. What is required is careful management to select and encourage regrowth of a single trunk (left to its own devices it will throw up many trunks from the stump and root system.) Many of our oldest trees have been coppiced (cut down close to the ground) or polarded (cut off higher up the trunk) many time in the past.

Hi Colin, you're absolutely right! We're doing all we can to protect the Sycamore Gap stump to give it the best chance of re-growth and we are optimistic we will see some re-growth.

@@nationaltrustcharity Many thanks for the reply! I'm glad to hear you are protecting the stump. I'm sure lots of people will be interested to hear how this is progressing. Please keep us all posted.

A senseless act but these sound like positive moves towards the future

I had been a member of the NT for over 30 years, sadly no more. 'National Trust" is more concerned with a Globalist agenda. I would encourage anyone still contributing to withdraw your support now.

      Very convincing, what globalist agenda?
If you want to be taken seriously then be serious! Articulate yoyr concerns rather than bellowing into an abyss...
