I live in Japan and I think the opening song is a dark one, so when it played at the end of episode 17 I didn't think anything of it, but I didn't know that some people thought it was a light-hearted song.
Nah, It's not about the song being light-hearted or dark. It's the ridiculousness of the phrase "you're my special" being uttered at the specific moment where Yuji was admonishing himself is what makes it a meme. It was so funny the first time around I watched it.
However, in the scene where Riko is killed, they added a song to make it seem like a moving scene, but she was shot at the line that said "head flight."
Idk abt you guys, but I always let just the OP and ED play in the background for series I haven't read the manga yet for fear of spoilers, up until around ep9 or ep10. 1 OP usually stays for 12 episodes so by ep9 its fairly safe now to view potential spoilers in opening song.
