Here in South Africa, we could only pick up Solid Gold on a station called Bop TV. Tried to never miss an episode!! My favourite was when Laura Branigan helped present!! Those were great days, and the dancing and choreography were superb and just got better each year!! Well done to everyone involved.
Really enjoying these S5 episodes, most of which I missed because I was away at college. This was a great episode. The dancers got huge screen time; 9 of 10 countdowns, dance-along with Peter Brown, and the 1975 song. Thanks so much!
never knew he was singin until this the last song i remember him doing in the 80's was crank it up and do that to me one mo time..but i do crank up his throwback song do u wanna get funky wit me and dance wit me
It seems like everyone always looked to Pam when they forget the choreography... Jamilah at 2:40 forgot about five seconds of movement, saw Pam and got back in the groove. Pam was working out the fist rolls double time at 5:16 and everyone else were moving at normal speed. Count on Pam to make the choreography really pop!
@bmayer00 - actually, for a period of about a year and a half (during which this video was uploaded) WMG was muting ALL videos that had any music from their artists or licensees. It wasn't just Prince that got muted.
@jayjames5 Unfortunately, no. Everything about a TV show is copyrighted and owned by various folks. And with music it get more convoluted since each song is owned by a label and if that song was a cover then there's more than one label involved
I'm surprised that you were able to get "Along Comes A Woman" from Chicago, and "Just Another Night" from Mick Jagger, as Chicago was on Warner Brothers at the time, and Mick's song is now released by Atlantic Records, a subsidiary of Warner.
Question: How accurate were Solid Gold's charts to R&R's? Reason I ask is: "Along Comes a Woman" is at #10 on this episode. However, going by the April 5, 1985 chart, it's at #8. The week before (3/29/85), it was at #9. Solid Gold vs. R&R (4/5/85): #10: "Along Comes a Woman" (#8) #9: "Material Girl" (#4) #8: "Somebody" (#13, it did peak at #8 the week before) #7: "Lovergirl" (#11) #6: "Just Another Night" (#18, peaked at #9 on 3/15/85 and 3/22/85) #5: "Nightshift" (#6, it would hit #5 on 4/12/85) #4 on R&R (since it's missing here): "Material Girl" by Madonna #3: "Take Me With U" (#35, would peak at #17 on 3/15/85 and 3/22/85, nowhere near #3) #2: "Crazy for You" (#3) #1: "One More Night" (#2) Actual #1 on R&R: "We Are the World" by USA for Africa
Love the ripped short shorts on the dancers. Must be an illusion since actually the standard dance attire shows more but is not as alluring. What do others think? Thanks for the upload.
Of course at the time, Mick was signed to Columbia Records, so that may be why it was okay to show, but I know that "Chicago 17" was on Full Moon/Warner Brothers Records, and even today, they are on Rhino, which is another subsidiary of the dreaded WB...
I know. I almost feel guilty that I get to enjoy it the way it aired back in the day . (Notice I said "almost") But I do feel bad that I have to mute all that great 80's music!!
Shhhhhh! Actually Chicago was on Full Moon Records and they had agreements with different companies. Maybe Warner only got the movie soundtrack stuff, idk. As for Mick, I don't know why it hasn't been caught but I am not saying nothing!!
@lbCharmed1 Prince had a major beef with Warner's if there is any payback on the part of Warner's to not play his music or else for fear of lawsuit with Prince again would be why his music is not heard here.
This season actually was the best...until Lezlie left. Then Darcel came back, Cooley stayed around......then it went from the best to "mmmm.....great, but....."
It's a good thing Solid Gold put the names of the songs on the bottom of the screen so you know what's being censored. Prince. And I always thought "Material Girl" was a stupid song too.
Another great compilation...sadly ruined by WB's censorship. I have a feeling that it's only going to get worse. Further proof that Warners is run by idiots. I suppose, however, we can "listen" to the muted songs in our heads...
Haha... yeah, well after Darcel left for most of this season, the smart thing to do would have been to highlight Pam as the lead dancer like they did with Deborah in Solid Gold Hits or Jamilah in the final seasons. But I don't think the ship sunk until Solid Gold '87 and Solid Gold In Concert ... doing away with the countdown and then the new crop of girls .. ughhh!
Sherrie Lynn - I acquired some personal dvds from poeple that transferred them from vcr tapes. And probably not because the music rights are too expensive.
I have to mute the song because certain record labels want to be paid in order to let the music be played. Otherwise they will mute the entire video. So certain songs get muted. Especially Warner Music Group songs.

This video is in extremely good quality, I'm thoroughly impressed.

Same with me. Many of these I saw for the 1st time this year!
Well this show just ROCKS!! ;-)
@OldskolFan - Darcel left SOLID GOLD for most of season 5. She returned to the show on June 29, 1984 in episode 39.
7:29 wow, sexy outfits from the solid gold dancers!
I thought the #10 song was gonna get the video muted. For some reason it didn't. Thank goodness for small miracles.

NICE!
Merci pour ta commentaire!

Why is it not cool to wear socks with sandals, but apparently it's totally rad to wear body stockings with high heels?
1:45 Its the typical 'bad' '80s song you'd hear in a bad 80s movie. Just before the main characters get chased by the police, lol
pantyhose and heels i'm rising to the ocasion

Solid Gold vs. R&R (4/5/85):
#10: "Along Comes a Woman" (#8)
#9: "Material Girl" (#4)
#8: "Somebody" (#13, it did peak at #8 the week before)
#7: "Lovergirl" (#11)
#6: "Just Another Night" (#18, peaked at #9 on 3/15/85 and 3/22/85)
#5: "Nightshift" (#6, it would hit #5 on 4/12/85)
#4 on R&R (since it's missing here): "Material Girl" by Madonna
#3: "Take Me With U" (#35, would peak at #17 on 3/15/85 and 3/22/85, nowhere near #3)
#2: "Crazy for You" (#3)
#1: "One More Night" (#2)
Actual #1 on R&R: "We Are the World" by USA for Africa
The shows were shot 2 weeks before airing so they kind of had to guess the rankings based on charts and radio play during the week they were taping.
@@lbCharmed1 Well, in many cases, they were inaccurate.
#4 missing song on this episode was "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" Don Henley

You had to go and say something. The very next post got muted because of that Chicago song and I have now had to re-edit the thing for posting!!
Wow, the Top 3 songs all muted (not counting the Solid Gold theme song inserted in the #1 song). That must be a first!
I know. I almost feel guilty that I get to enjoy it the way it aired back in the day . (Notice I said "almost")
But I do feel bad that I have to mute all that great 80's music!!
"Li-Li-Long Comes a Woman!"
Shhhhhh! Actually Chicago was on Full Moon Records and they had agreements with different companies. Maybe Warner only got the movie soundtrack stuff, idk. As for Mick, I don't know why it hasn't been caught but I am not saying nothing!!

@lbCharmed1 Wasn't this broadcast on public airwaves, doesn't that make it public domain?
Music and TV shows are copyrighted. Some labels want royalties payed for use of music released on their labels

Is it possible to find all the solid gold series on dvd?
Sherrie Lynn - not avaiable as a set on dvd.
lbCharmed1 how did you find these clips I wonder if these will ever be on dvd someday
Sherrie Lynn - I acquired some personal dvds from poeple that transferred them from vcr tapes. And probably not because the music rights are too expensive.
Where's Darcel? This is towards the end of this show's success...
Crystal Gayle was wrong- this was not Peter Brown's first hit record. That was 7 years before. "Zie Zie" was his worst as far as I'm concerned.
Darcel was the best she was not fat.
What the hell do u have to mute during a song
I have to mute the song because certain record labels want to be paid in order to let the music be played. Otherwise they will mute the entire video. So certain songs get muted. Especially Warner Music Group songs.
that darcel chick could never really dance that great and she was always thirty pounds over weight, none of the other girls were
Toddster2012 You sounds delicious dumb! Darcel was the finest and sexiest dancer ever to be a Solid Gold dancers!
