My Malibu has the protech name and cpm20cv on the spine but no serial number on it is this legit or do just some of them not have the number on the spine? Thanks
Just grabbed one in-person to replace the one I bought at 13 years old. Definitely was exactly what I wanted without knowing it when I went into the store. Love the flipping action!
Love this knife. Malibu has taken place over my Bugouts, osbornes, I also just got a Sonora and have trouble deciding which to carry for the day. I have 5 Malibus and 1 Sonora. I still like my Osborne 945 on gym short days but mainly Loving the Sonora from machine wise since I got it.
I got the blue wharncliffe version from River’s Edge Cutlery 2 weeks ago. Mine is PR1 #166. For a button lock flipper the detent is very impressive. My first Protech and certainly not my last. Thanks for the reviews.
Beautiful knife and a great review MC. I would love to see this stay fairly sterile. This price is way in the high side of my budget but very tempting. I always thought the first Pro-Tech I might buy was the TR3 but this is very nice. Thanks!
Thanks for yet another excellent review, MC! As someone who has yet to own either a Pro-Tech or a Benchmade EDC, I was wondering what your thoughts are on the build quality and fit&finish between these two "Premium" companies. Thanks again!
I was finally able to order one a couple of days ago, with purple scales and the reverse tanto. I was hoping to find one with the standard wharncliffe style of blade, but my favorite color is purple (dont judge lol) and I've rarely come across any other colors other than black or blue, so i had to grab it. They were also already sold out by that evening, so im glad i did. i have several other auto protechs and they're probably my favorite knife manufacturer at this point.
I think I have one coming as a birthday/anniversary gift next month. I’ve been beating on my cqc7 for about 3 years now and have only broken one spring the entire life of it. I’m excited to see how the action is on their button lock flippers.
It is spectacular. This knife will be sold for as long as Protech is a functional company. “Instant classic” is the term that comes to mind. I just got a Blue reverse tanto on the Nov.17 BladeHQ drop. Instantly onto my top 3 all time favorite list. They need to make these 24 hours a day for 2 months straight to try and appease people. So many people are intensely irritated they can’t get them. I was one of them until A few days ago.
Been trying to get one of these suckers for months! Got the notification for the last drop on BHQ and it was out of stock in less than 3 min lol. Some day...😁
Unrelated...MC, you happen to know of anyone that's done HRC testing on Hinderer's gen 6 m390? I got my first one a weekish ago and it seems a bit softer than other m390/20cv knives I've sharpened
@@jagpilotohio Yeah they all have sold out really fast. You are going to have to make an account and add it to your wishlist and it will notify you via email when it comes back in stock.
I realize this is an older video but I'm gonna clarify: The STOP PIN & POCKET CLIP screws are T6. The PIVOT & REAR BODY screws are hex 1/16 in or 1.5 mm hex. I love this knife, I've owned 14 of them! #13 just got here, #14 is on the way. I promised myself I'd finally keep these two, haha.
I bought one but ended up returning it. I am punching myself right now. I want that thing back but there literally isn't anywhere to buy them. I've checked everywhere I can think of and all out of stock.
Why do you have 14 Malibu's? Protech only makes a few special ones to collect. Unless you're getting custom work done to them. Great collection though. I'm lucky to own just one. It's coming in a week.
@@P.W.R. What I mean is that at different times I've owned a total of 14 different Malibus. The most I ever owned at one time was three. I had one Ti version, a blue aluminum Wharncliffe & a black reverse tanto. 😀
I have the Wharncliffe version and there is no writing on the blade, it is on the spine exactly like the one you are showing. There is a quite a lot of lock stick on the button on mine.
Thats great to know! The ones on BHQ (reverse tanto) have the logo on the blade face though. Edit, talked with protech and they will actually be mostly sterile like this 👍👍
I have the same wharncliffe version and I have no issues with lock stick. I did however have to send it in for RMA as shutting it the blade was digging into the inside of the "back spacer"
Nate Printz I thought I saw 1 review where they said pro-tech had built into the knife just the slightest amount of button stick for some reason. It works, but it is not as smooth as the Mordax and I have 2 of those for comparison. Anyway it works, and I am not going to give it up..... that’s for sure.
@@paulziems1433 agreed! It's awesome and so smooth. I actually liked it so much I went and purchased the Mordax as well and love them both. I might have to get the reverse tanto version as well 😅
Mine has some up and down play, it's funny how @protech told you that there isn't any vertical play. Because I sent a email and asked about this and the response I got was that some vertical play is normal and should get better over time.🤔 I have #293 so not sure about 250, and my blade is exactly the same.
@@itsme5279 Yes. I emailed them like you did, and they told me some play was "normal" in a button lock. With so many other people saying they have solid lock ups, I explained that I wasn't happy and they offered to look at it. I had to pay shipping to them, but they are covering the return shipping
I have almost the same one, just instead of the blade shape and name Protech Malibu, my one is a drop point and named Real Steel Griffin 😅😂 Thank you for showing MC!
I like that there isn't a lanyard hole and more importantly not a lanyard hole with priority over a deep carry clip. They really know how to make a knife how people want it to be right out the box. Spyderco should take notes.
If you had to pick between this or the spyderco smock which would you recommend. I am looking for a button flipper that has a high fidget factor. I would love to hear your opinion.
I know your post is older, but I just got a blue reverse Tanto last week and it is spectacular. My current most carried knife happens to be the smock but the Malibu will now be challenging that. I love both of them. You can’t go wrong with either but the Smock does have the extra spydie hole deployment option for a tiny bit higher fidget factor.
Have you had a chance to handle the Textured model yet? Just got mine yesterday and I love it but seems to have some very noticeable detent lash which is kind of a bummer!
Is the handle slippery to you? The finish of the handle on mine is so slippery that its turning me off from the knife , falls out of my hand like a bar of soap :/
If only they’d make one of these in a less than 4” closed length, I’d buy one today and stop looking for an every day pocketknife forever. My all-time favorite is the Para 3, of which I own three, and I think they’re the most useful everyday knife of all time. For a couple years, they’re all I carried. Then I started carrying a Leatherman Free P4 every day, which meant that I needed a smaller knife to compliment it that would fit comfortably in my watch pocket, which I found in the Pro-Tech Sprint, but it could be a little bigger and still do what I need it to and I honestly don’t really prefer its blade grind or autos in general, though it is an absolutely amazing knife. This knife, in a 3.5-4” closed length, would be the most perfect possible knife for me, and I bet I’m not alone. I hope they make both a smaller version and a larger version of this knife, I can’t imagine they wouldn’t sell, and I’d buy at least one without question.
