Kudos to this video for promoting civil engineering as a branch. It is a bit concerning that this field in itself seems to have few takers but does have a lot of demand for personnel across the world in terms of job. I have to appreciate Prof.Patra for enlightening the future students of this field about the expectations. I agree with him that the curriculum of civil engineering in India is focused more on structural engineering however most of the students completing civil engineering would be working in construction. Three key areas which are required in this is 1.construction management which will include site management and stakeholder management, 2.planning and 3.quantity surveying and contracts. Next, the perception of people is that civil engineering is purely site work, but it is not true in today’s scenario. It is probably one of the most balanced field which gives equal opportunity for both indoor and outdoor works. There is a lot of office work which is required before the actual construction can begin. Also with technology being adopted, more and more work is being automated and works are monitored from air conditioned rooms 😊. He is also right in pointing out that though the initial salaries may not be high as compared to IT, the growth could be exponential once you progress in your career. Also, it gives you ample opportunities to start your own business, not just as a contractor or consultant but also in establishing subsidiary businesses such as laboratories and surveying. It might seem hard but if one puts their mind to it, it can be achieved. And finally, yes, civil engineers need to improve their soft skills and be updated with technology. They will be making a lot of presentations on projects. This comes from a person who has been in this industry for a substantial duration.
Sir, the way each of the professors explain about their particular departments is very intriguing. I also got to know how each and every branch is so interdisciplinary. It makes me feel like studying all these branches.😂 Thanks again for this great initiative.🙏🏾
