I bought an Ergatta in September of 2021 and really started using it in December of 2021. I use it 4 to 5 times a week, mostly for interval workouts and races. I have also done a few of the Push Programs. I love it! I have owned a Peloton and a treadmill, and this is the only piece of exercise equipment where I am motivated to use it. I am 6-feet tall, and when I started using the Ergatta I weighed 185 pounds. I knew I could probably stand to lose a few pounds, but I was not overweight or anything. Now I weigh 170 pounds and feel like I am at the weight I am supposed to be. More than that, my stomach is flat, my arms are more toned, and my legs are getting nicely shaped. One other thing about using the Ergatta consistently is it has changed my desire to eat a bunch of carbs and fatty foods (likely getting into shape through any exercise would do this). The data with the Ergatta is a huge motivator. Knowing what my average split is, how much time I spend rowing on average, trying to complete the monthly challenges, working through Push Programs, monitoring strokes per minute, etc., all act as motivators for getting on the Ergatta. Best money I've ever spent on a consumer-type item.
Thanks for doing this review. I have had my Ergatta rower for about a month and I love it. One of the new features they just implemented is every 10 workouts it automatically recalibrates based on those 10 workouts. Did research on all the different rowers and really glad I bought this one. Great review, can't wait to hear your insights in the future.
How's it going for you now? I just sold my Peloton and was looking at the Hydrow but didn't love it, and then came across the Ergatta but thought I would get the WaterRower but am now considering the Ergatta again and would love to hear from some owners who've had it for a while.

While contemplating which version Ergatta to get I came upon this old but very useful review. For me the valuable part was seeing you row on the Lite and literally tweak the frame on each stroke. I am 280lbs and built like a middle linebacker and have been rowing on a Concept 2 regularly for 18 years. Seeing that demo, I just knew I would eventually destroy the Lite. So it will be the original model for which I will retire my Concept 2. Nothing wrong with it (parts are readily available to keep it going forever) and I know there is now an Ergatta add-on for the Concept 2 but I want to try the water style resistance.
Thank you for your review, I ordered the Ergatta last month and am waiting on my delivery. Your First Impressions review is exactly why I ordered this rower instead of the Hydrow, that and I do love the WaterRower. I am excited to get my rower soon. Update - my rower is being delivered on Friday, can't wait to start rowing.

Really finding your videos so helpful. Thank you for the time and expertise you put into them. This review pushed me over the edge and I got the upgrade for my WaterRower. Looking forward to installing it and improving as a rower.
I've been watching all of your review videos to help me find my first rower. Really helped me make a more informed choice. I think I've got a decent one in my price range, looks a lot like this Ergatta. One thing I've really been paying attention to is the monitors, something I would not have done without your videos. Thank you!
Wow! It was easy to see that you were excited about the Ergatta’s software and gamification of Erg training. I particularly like the idea of personal calibration. As compared to the Hydrow, I would prefer this as it is geared towards a more data based and personalized training program, as opposed to a group/class style oriented one. Then again, I have never liked screaming coaches that think they can goad you on. This is likely an introvert thing, but over lifetime of training, I have not found this style of coaching to be either constructive, let alone useful to me. I skew to a more analytical performance based approach, which is what this seems to be. As a longtime C2 Model D owner, I hope that we will see some of this innovation make its way to the C2 platform, either as software and/or hardware modifications with future PMs, ErgData or third party apps. I looked at the Hydrow at Best Buy last night and then came across the Ergatta today, which I think is really nice. But I think I'm going back to my first choice, the WaterRower, and will watch rowing classes on my tablet or TV.
I’ve been researching forever and am so grateful for this and the other comparison video where you stack ranked a bunch of rowers. I bought the Nordictrack s22i bike and love the outdoor virtual rides..I thought I would like their rower too for the same reason but have kept coming back to the water rower type rowers for quality concerns on the Nordictrack rower…plus who doesn’t want that peaceful water sound and gorgeous wood machine instead? I’ve compromised and bought just the Water Rower machine and will buy the Ergatta package to add the arm and tablet later. For now I’ll use the iFIT rowing on my tablet and make plans for the Ergatta add on in a few months after recovering from Christmas spending. This also let me choose the club Rowe version in ash wood that I thought would go better with my office decor where it will live, rather than the cherry wood. Super excited!! I was just looking at the CityRow Go earlier. And checked out the rowing classes on Apple Fitness +. I think I will get a regular WaterRower and watch the classes on my TV or tablet. They are really good and I get the gym environment feel with the motivating dance music that I like.
Hi Austin, I'm a highschool senior and I recently discovered your channel. I got a concept 2 rowing machine last week and I decided to take up rowing since unfortunately my wrestling season just got cancelled. I just got a PR yesterday of 6:48 for a 2k which was a huge improvement over my first try of 7:12. I am about 155 pounds, 5 '10 and I have a 36 on the ACT and good grades. I think I would like to row in college if possible but I have no actual experience on the water. I know I have a super late start but do you this is a realistic goal? Should I contact college coaches or try to drop my time by a bit more first? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated since your videos have already helped me so much. Thanks and keep up the great content! :D
I recently did the Hydrow feedback questionnaire and said it would be better to "gamify" the workouts. Little did I know I could've said, "be more like Ergatta." It would be great to have both the coach and game type of workouts on one machine!
This is actually the cheaper option. A Waterrower Club is 1295USD, the upgrade is 549USD ... so 1844USD vs Ergatta's 2199USD .. so you're saving over 350USD before any taxes.
I wanted to find a video with a lot of reviews to post my purchase experience. I had some issues. I am pleased to say that the company worked with me until the issue was resolved. That is all I expect from a company. I don't expect a perfect product when I order it. I know that there can be issues. I judge them on how they respond to the issues, and they were very helpful and made it right. Hopefully your machine will arrive in perfect condition, but if doesn't, know that they will make it right. They won't just take your money and ignore you if you have issues. Now my machine is working. I can't give a full review yet, but I just wanted to praise them on their customer support. They resolved my issue and if you are apprehensions about choosing this rower because it is a new company, don't be. They stand by their product and will work hard to satisfy any issues you have. I commend them for that. Any good company will do that.
Wishy my new hydrow had gamified workout routines. I think they would help me out. Love the hydrow, but this video leaves me wanting for the game aspects and "accountability". Id be very interested in a true comparison of the hydrow vs ergatta.
if you do the live workouts on hydrow you should have some kinda of "competition" effect. The footplate on the ergatta is going to actually be a killer, the closer foot placing actually leads to less power as you ideally want your feet inline with your hips and not brought in narrow. Its a very old design for a foot plate compared to what is available today for on water rowers. You made the better choice with the Hydrow
Hello, I have never rowed before and I am looking to improve my health. I don't have any intentions of actually getting out on the water, but who knows. Peloton has their bikes and their treadmills. I don't like the bikes, but the treadmill is appealing. So it this. What I do like about this is that the hardware is cheaper, looks beautiful, and the membership is actually a lot cheaper. Many of the things you shared in the video make sense as well and are appealing. I have run on a treadmill before, but it wasn't all that exciting. My question is this, how would you compare this experience to running on a treadmill? Is this more of a complete workout because you use your legs and your arms? Is this considered aerobic exercise?
Would you recommend this rower for a guy like me? I'm 6'1" 375lbs and I just need a change. I want to lose weight. I NEED to get to a healthy weight so I can live to see my children grow up and, God willing, see my grandchildren someday. I'm not sure my wife would ever let me spend this much money to begin with but there are NO other experiences like what Ergatta offers. I love the "gamified" aspect of Ergatta and truly believe it would motivate me and keep me accountable. I'd appreciate any words of wisdom you may have! Thanks for this video and all your other ones too!

Yes - it is fantastic for beginners, however, technique-specific training is best to do with a coach that can actually review your form (like me - check my website for form reviews!)
Does this machine link up with Strava or Garmin? I know with the C2 you can port over your workouts but I’m wondering if it’s possible with this setup as well. I’m thinking this type of gaming type of program for my workouts would work better for in than the C2 type. Thanks for all your videos too👍
@@Geminikittnz I purchased water rower machine at the early start of COVID February. I cancelled my OT orange theory membership. I purchased the added upgrade monitor and have been using it everyday since late July. The Software is like no other. Worth it in my opinion and works very well. This is out of the box training compared to others at this time.
I haven't been on a rowing machine for over 20 years, but I will get one again soon. I am doing it for fitness. I like to find out what you think of rowing with the hands facing up ( an arm curl ), in addition to the regular grip.
Any idea if you can get the screen and use these features by purchasing the SmartRow or Ergatta’s WaterRower Upgrade Package and installing on an knockoff water rower? (I have "Mr. Right", haha)
Looks like a pretty nice package for a quite hefty price. I got myself a Waterrower Performance Ergometer a week ago, as I needed something quiet and with a smaller footprint than the C2. Its fitted with the SmartRow pulley from the factory. The provided additional information and better comparable statistics versus the S4 monitor, really gets me motivated. I think the waterrower only lacks a decent monitor, which is provided by the smartrow app features. Allegedly its even more accurate than the Concept 2… but you never know ;)
That's the next video I've got coming out! And to be VERY honest, they are just two extremely different "experiences". Hydrow is much more geared towards those who enjoy fitness classes/coaches while Ergatta is much more "personally driven", but in a very fun and interactive way. So, it really comes down to what motivates you!
Training Tall oh yay I can’t wait for next vid! I inherited an Ergatta but I don’t know what version I don’t have the screen but that Hydrow community has me so hyped up! But then this vid got me hyped on this machine. Hoping if my rower isn’t too old of a model I can buy the screen! Love your channel !
@@trainingtall I'm currently making a pro/con list between the Ergatta and Hydrow and your videos are so helpful. I can't wait for the comparison video!
Next video should be ergatta vs. Hydrow. Seems to me ergatta is better for actual training. Ergatta would be good for competitive rowers and people looking to actually get faster at rowing. Hydrow is like Pelton as many people compare it to. Hydrow seems more like a spin class on a rower. Where ergatta gives you tailored workouts and paces based on your fitness level. Wish they choose a c2 model d as the base unit instead of the water tower though. I would definitely purchase it if that was the case.
Can you have more than one user for the machine? Looking at this for my partner and I but we have varying fitness levels. Wouldn’t want my workouts to recalibrate their workouts and vice versa..
Can someone tell me if the Ergatta can be ordered in another kind of wood besides cherry? I don't like the look of cherry wood. Waterrower has different woods, like walnut. Is it best to order a walnut wood Waterrower and then purchase the Ergatta upgrade package in walnut?
I totally agree, I found the difference is the Hydrow interface is basically watching people row with motivation thrown in. The Ergatta has interactive levels. I was able to purchase a water rower and then purchase the Ergatta upgrade. Saved me over $1,000. I love that Ergatta can be stored upright, much smaller and has soothing water sound.🤷🏽
@@blakeives5509 it was really expensive (not that this machine isn’t) for limited functionality. I felt like at that price point, there should be nothing that a c2 can do that the non subscription model can’t do, but especially with the subscription, the fact that you can’t just hop on and do 3x10’ or a 2k I feel is insane. If you have the money and are rowing recreationally, then it seems great, but not for me, or anyone rowing to race. (That’s at least how I feel)
Looks good, price is high but there’s nothing like this on the market. 33 years ago the gym I went to had rowing machines with a screen that had a Nintendo looking game. You could race other people in the gym. If you went too slow a shark appeared and unless you started to haul it would eat you and that was game over. I use to always run use it. Ergatta should add a retro version of the game.
But is it worth the extra money? Does it row like a concept 2, which is what I have always trained on. I have tried other water towers and they have never felt like a concept 2
It does not "feel like a Concept 2" - a bit less "heavy" feeling per stroke on this compared to concept 2, but it rows very well in my opinion, gets the job done, can be filled with more water as necessary. Not quite comparable split/500m times as Concept 2, but again it all comes down to your goals! If you are looking to be a competitive, on the water rowing athlete, stick with Concept 2. If you're just looking to get fit in a very personalized-to-you way, this is a much more effective/reliable option than concept 2, I think
@@trainingtall That makes sense. Thanks. As someone who rowed in college, just can't imagine anything else! (I have a concept 2 at home, but the wife hates how ugly it is - so I was "ergatta curious"! :)
Awesome video! I hope that they open up the platform for Concept2 owners as well (and couple it with the PM5 via bluetooth or USB). Or even better, Concept2 up their game as well. While the PM5 is great, the Ergatta platform does seem like it provides a lot of the stuff that I'd really like to have for my Concept2.
Have you experienced any issues with errors during rowing? I have had the rower for a week and twice it has error'd with "usb connection or other issues" mid row. If an open row, it logs the data of the row, but if a push program, you lose all data.
Michael, I am an Ergatta owner your second issue I am pretty sure Ergatta has acknowledged and are working on a fix currently. I have not experienced the connection error while rowing. I did when I turned it on the first week I had it. There was a support article on their website on how to resolve it.
Please review this handle..."Trak Fitness Sportrower (Indoor Rowing Machine Handle)"...it is $129 and I am wondering if it is worth it for full-body workout training on the rower...thanks!
@@trainingtall I got fit enough to where I could tie my shoes and squat down low and decided to pick up the machine last month after enjoying the rowing machine at work. I still decided to return it because the foot resting position was too close for me to use comfortably.
How many profiles can you have per subscription.? I have two other adults that would be interested in this. Would they need to have their own subscription?
Hello Justin, great review again. If I may have a suggestion, can you test a 'water rower' from First Degree Fitness ? I bought the one named Viking 3V roughly a two months ago. I believe that the biggest gain in those is the patent FDF company is using, they have a double tank where you can adjust resistance without pouring water in and out. It's just a knob turn ... I have to say, I'm watching all your videos, I have not row before and simply jumped into it. Still working my way up, 2000 meter is 9 minutes for me still ... once I push it below seven I'm looking forward to ROW-20 with you. I did quiet reserch before buying one, but there is no general knowledge about them ... you might be the spark and we will get rid of those boring Concept 2 :D
@@trainingtall Oh good, I am glad WaterRower did not get ripped off! Any thoughts on doing a review on the City Go Row platform? I have a water rower and love using it with my ipad and city row.
I still have yet to check it out! But I will at some point!
Yo man! Looks like I got to your question on my other vid!
Getting our Ergatta delivered tomorrow, and we are pretty excited!
Very exciting!!
this dude is crazy and i think i like him a lot. good vibes Austin! great video!
Thanks haha!
I recently did the Hydrow feedback questionnaire and said it would be better to "gamify" the workouts. Little did I know I could've said, "be more like Ergatta."
It would be great to have both the coach and game type of workouts on one machine!
Wonder if they’ll sell the monitor (and whatever extras) so we can upgrade the WaterRower we have at home.
Just checked their website and they do! 549$
I might have just found my Xmas present 😆
Pretty sweet, huh?
@@trainingtall yes!! Now I hope they ship to Europe 😬
Just sent them a message.
This is actually the cheaper option. A Waterrower Club is 1295USD, the upgrade is 549USD ... so 1844USD vs Ergatta's 2199USD .. so you're saving over 350USD before any taxes.
@dexterie which WaterRower do you have?
I hope you get any answer soon, I want to know as well. Thank you for elaborate that question.
Loving the funky avocado socks ahhhh!! I swear they make you row faster 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Haha you're the best, Gracie :) Thank you!!!
Im a 6'2 and 360 garbage man and yes it does good with my weight . i used my friends at his house and getting ready to order my own soon . his didnt have the screen on it . when i get home from work my knees and back hurt alot . i do about 1200 homes a day in an mack f.e.l. with a tipper .this machine makes it easier for me without have high impact on my joints . iv lost 35lbs in 4 months . once i get mine i can use it more often .
Good review. What shoes are you wearing?
Austin, FYI, you have the seat backwards on that rower, the dimple goes to the rear to protect your coccyx. Check the installation instructions.
I actually put the seat like that as I prefer it in the front! Helps me get a better lean forward!
@@trainingtall Ok man, whatever floats your...er....boat.
Just ordered one and hoping there's not toooooooo much of a delay. Looking forward to using it at home.. Glad I found your channel.
Would you recommend Ergatta for a first-time rower? Are there any beginner workouts that focus specifically on perfecting technique?
Yes - it is fantastic for beginners, however, technique-specific training is best to do with a coach that can actually review your form (like me - check my website for form reviews!)
@@trainingtall Thank you!
Does this machine link up with Strava or Garmin? I know with the C2 you can port over your workouts but I’m wondering if it’s possible with this setup as well.
I’m thinking this type of gaming type of program for my workouts would work better for in than the C2 type.
Thanks for all your videos too👍
Yes, Strava integration is there.
Do you have a video that shows what the scenic rows look like and perhaps the water sound of the Ergatta experience?
Hey would you be able to do a video on the CityRow Go Classic and/or Max? Would love to hear how they compare to Water Rower and Ergratta, thank you!
I have this machine and love it. You hit everything about this machine and experience on point!! No other machine has this at the moment.
How long have you owned the machine?
@@Geminikittnz I purchased water rower machine at the early start of COVID February. I cancelled my OT orange theory membership. I purchased the added upgrade monitor and have been using it everyday since late July. The Software is like no other. Worth it in my opinion and works very well. This is out of the box training compared to others at this time.
@@cyclingmc this machine definitely has my attention.
They say the resistance is not choppy and can be as difficult as you'd like it to be on the C2. Is the Ergatta the same way?
Correct for the most part!
How does one increase the resistance on the Ergatta?
@@JA-ym4bg you row faster
I haven't been on a rowing machine for over 20 years, but I will get one again soon. I am doing it for fitness. I like to find out what you think of rowing with the hands facing up ( an arm curl ), in addition to the regular grip.
Loving the avocado socks. ❤️ Oh, and thanks for all of the info too!
My wife and I would like to row, how many users can the Ergatta take?
As many profiles as you want under one subscription!
Allegedly its even more accurate than the Concept 2… but you never know ;)
How much function does this have without a subscription? I don’t want a monthly subscription model.
How would you compare this with Hydrow? And if choosing between the two ?
I want to buy a rower but having trouble deciding between Nordic Ergatta and Hydrow. I’m new to rowing and need motivation
Do you have to have a monthly subscription to use the Ergatta or can you use the Ergatta without the monthly subscriptions?
Are there also regular coaching workouts?
Never heard of this thing before. It’s beautiful. Gonna get one. Thanks.
Its new and on the rise for sure!
Don’t do it…no customer service
Infinite accounts on one machine for one subscription!
Can someone tell me if the Ergatta can be ordered in another kind of wood besides cherry? I don't like the look of cherry wood. Waterrower has different woods, like walnut. Is it best to order a walnut wood Waterrower and then purchase the Ergatta upgrade package in walnut?
I have a xeno rower 11-12yrs old, it looks like I can get ergatta will it work?
Can different people use the same machine? My son, husband and I all want to do this!!
Besides the Ergatta part, how do these rowers compare to the water rower A1 that has a single track glide frame?
What shorts are you wearing? Saw links for the shoes, among many things but not the lycra/spandex 😔
Check out JL racing!
The only thing that worries me is the instability when you are rowing it moves a little... would you say that's not an issue at all?
What’s the difference between the echelon rower and the ergatta.
i own a water rower can i like have the app and put it on an ipad or sth
You can buy the Ergatta tech separately!
@@trainingtall thats good was looking for smth to keep me occupied while rowing sth like the hydrow ...thanks man appreciate it
Great video. Do you happen to know the weight before the water is added?
Thank you! I don’t - but it’s a damn light machine!
I am a 70 yrs old male and my primary goal is to lose weight and get rid of the fat in my belly. Would you recommend this machine for me.
Is there an accepted conversion rate between Concept 2 splits and WaterRower splits?
No "accepted" conversion rate yet
Should the seat be reverted?
Do you think you could do a reveiw of the Biorower?
I was excited about the Hydrow, but a few things really bothered me. I think this is perfect for me, and a lot of people rowing for fitness
What bothered you about the Hydrow? And do you think this machine does better?
Looking for a good quality water rower or regular rower for around $500. Im 6'2 and 250lbs. Any suggestions?
Can it be calibrated for more than one person?
Yup! Infinite accounts on one machine!
@Giuseppe Shmo every 10 workouts on the machine it will automatically calibrate so your progress keeps being challenged. Awesome machine.
@@trainingtall I think it’s based on subscription level. Monthly vs yearly. I have the yearly and it does allow multiple user profiles
What do you think of the Hydrow in comparison?
Does it scoot when you power
Thank you for your AWESOME videos! New subscriber here. Any updates on your use with Ergatta?
Awesome video! I hope that they open up the platform for Concept2 owners as well (and couple it with the PM5 via bluetooth or USB). Or even better, Concept2 up their game as well. While the PM5 is great, the Ergatta platform does seem like it provides a lot of the stuff that I'd really like to have for my Concept2.
I suppose you have heard but 3 years after your post they just announced a Concept 2 integration.
Can the Ergatta Rower calibrate to more than one user?
Can the machine be calibrated to multiple people? Or just one person?
Have you experienced any issues with errors during rowing? I have had the rower for a week and twice it has error'd with "usb connection or other issues" mid row. If an open row, it logs the data of the row, but if a push program, you lose all data.
Michael, I am an Ergatta owner your second issue I am pretty sure Ergatta has acknowledged and are working on a fix currently. I have not experienced the connection error while rowing. I did when I turned it on the first week I had it. There was a support article on their website on how to resolve it.
Hi Michael - we will connect with you to solve this!
Please review this handle..."Trak Fitness Sportrower (Indoor Rowing Machine Handle)"...it is $129 and I am wondering if it is worth it for full-body workout training on the rower...thanks!
what should i buy ? waterrower or ergatta rower ? which one is better? i fear that ergatta will need repair work faster idk .
Thank you, I am about to try mine today!!!
If I don't currently have the mobility to tie my shoes (wear slip-ons), can I still strap my shoes into the foot rest?
Don't get this machine - will be too uncomfortable
@@trainingtall I got fit enough to where I could tie my shoes and squat down low and decided to pick up the machine last month after enjoying the rowing machine at work. I still decided to return it because the foot resting position was too close for me to use comfortably.
That was a great review!
How many profiles can you have per subscription.? I have two other adults that would be interested in this. Would they need to have their own subscription?
Can this rower accommodate multi-users?
How is the monitor powered?
👚 👕🩳 👖 🧺 I wish they built in a larger hatch so I could do my laundry while I work out.
LOL!
Love the Pearl Jam tattoo. I have the same on the inside of my ankle. And for that reason alone, I'm buying this rower!
I will check it out if I get a chance to use it! Keep up the great work my friend!
What are the benefits of rowing? I’m a cyclist and do a lot of yoga. Thanks?!
Does WaterRower make the actual machine, or did they just sorta copy the design ?
WaterRower makes the machine! Ergatta makes the tech!
@@trainingtall Oh good, I am glad WaterRower did not get ripped off! Does it use the pully as a sensor or the same sensor modality as the water rowers orignal S4 sensor (which from what I hear is not as reliable). And a large thanks for all your content, such a great resource for everyone, your channel is my go to place for becoming at rowing.
Did you say 5:25 2k? Wouldn’t that be like a world record?
WaterRowers calibrate differently, more like 6:25 on C2
@@trainingtall ooo ok thank you didn’t know that.
Hope that Ergatta or Waterrower might sell one day the monitor as an upgrade for the Waterrower machine. Don't want to just sell brand new rowing machine just to get the screen.
They have it on their site!!
@@trainingtall thanks for answering. But I went to both companies website and couldn't find the screen as stand-alone or upgrade. But anyway, might be later then.
@@andreacaminiti1588 Give a google for "ergatta upgrade". Forgot where the link is on the main site, but that should get you there!
