Living Abroad Changed My Mindset

- I have never felt at home when I am in my hometown; ironic, I know. I am the kind of person who prefers travelling, meeting new people and opening my horizons. Being a GenZ, this is actually normal as we feel less of a need to stay in the nest, or stay in the same job for our whole life. I believe that modern technology has allowed us to stay connected more than ever, so the feeling of homesickness is only a facetime away. In this video, I discuss why I believe everyone should take the chance to live abroad for even a short period of time.

There's a quote that goes something like, 'how can you expect to be creative when all you can see is four walls' - would love to travel, think it'd open my mind so much!
This is awesome! where did you hear that? :)
@@LucyAlllan I read it in Austin Kleon's book Show Your Work! Would defo recommend reading it if you haven't read it already (especially as a content creator).
yeah not when you're from an arab country sadly lol
My dream is to move to Japan for a year💚. I love hearing about your experience. Traveling abroad opens your mind to so many new e ideologies. Great video! ☺️
that's great!! i just moved back to Japan for a 3rd and probably final time. i really love it here!! what interests you about it?
@@DrJustininJapan very cool! And honestly I love everything about Japan! I love their fashion, food and culture but I want to experience it for myself
"Traveling abroad opens your mind" Maybe you're right, but hapiness depends on our inner state of mind and emotions not on the outer world around us : whoever is well with themselves can be happy wherever they are, no matter where; but it's natural to seek natural places.
Ohh hey Dr Justin that's so cool !! What do you love about it ?
I’ve just moved to Malta for an Erasmus internship and I love watching your videos as they are so relatable! Definitely agree with everything you said 🥰🥰
Omg how is Malta?? That sounds incredible 😌
thats so cool! i had the chance to visit malta too, hope you like this little piece of paradise.
I'm from Slovakia and I'm currently living abroad in Scotland (well, it's because of uni so I'm not properly adulting yet) and it's..interesting to say the least. I love the job opportunities within my sector (although London holds most of them) but I absolutely don't feel at home here. For example I'm staying in halls for third!! year purely because I didn't have a UK guarantor to be able to rent a flat (why is that even a thing though, what if I'm a millionaire in my home country?🤣), plus, and I cannot stress this enough, it's all about people! If you don't find the right ones (which I haven't), the experience is less enjoyable. Nevertheless, I'm craving to move somewhere else, either within the UK or Ireland or Spain (because I also speak Spanish) or Australia or New Zealand 😁
omg i'm from Scotland, and I am sorry you're not enjoying it! I would always suggest going to the uni bars and joining a society to be able to make friends. I know in Glasgow there are language cafés where you can meet (hopefully) some great people. I personally don't feel at home there either because the weather depresses me and I don't tend to connect with the locals that much, but I would always say that Scottish people are super kind and helpful :)
@@LucyAlllan oh yeah definitely! Everyone I met that was Scottish was suuuuper lovely and sometimes those small interactions make my day. It’s probably the uni culture I’m not enjoying hahaha
It's the same with getting a visa for an internship in the UK. You need sponsoring to enter the UK but like you could be a millionaire and would not be able to do it? Like I saved for years to be able to do an internship program in the UK and now it's not possible anymore 🥲
I've lived 1 year in the Czech Republic and now curretly in Ireland... Of course living abroad changed definitly my mindset and helped me to be open minded !
Thank you so much for this video! My only real experience abroad was one month in Dubai but then I lived with family so I was not fully alone. Next academic year I will *hopefully* move abroad for an internship, but I am also a bit scared to go abroad all by myself. Your video really made me remember that the positives will outweigh the negatives 🥰
Wow I just discovered your channel and... wow. I love your mindset and how you perceive language learning, the world... I am half french half german, having lived in both countries and speaking both fluently. I think it's so true that your really get more open to new cultures and languages when you speak 2 languages or more. It has (as you say) so much advantages in every way, everyone should do it! You are so inspiring, I'm sure a lot of people will want to be like you after watching your video;) I don't know yet what I'll do later, but your video really motivated me to discover other countries and cultures...
Ciao!
I'll do an internship abroad this spring and I'm happy and scared at the same time. This video comes at the perfect time! 💖
I love this video! Not moving abroad, but i'm taking a month long trip to Europe for the first time this spring. This gave me some encouragement.
it's all so true! I liked when you talked about the problems related to the bank account while living abroad: the fact that simply yes, for me, we are still young, but travelling, it can help us grow and cope with these little problems, in addition to broadening our minds...
What i'd say is actually:"growth is a process" and "the world is like a book, if you don't travel you read only a page", just to quote some of my favourites, all linked to your interesting video!🥰🥰
Hi Lucy! Totally agree with you, I lived in Canada and for me is like home...Experiences abroad are a must! I love it and I'm just looking forward to my next one :)
Also I'm from Valencia, I hope the city is what you were looking for!
Ah a fellow Valencian, girl I love this city. Everything and everyone is so welcoming and I am loving the slow vibes of the place :) I hope you can stay in Canada for longer then, Me alegra saber que has encontrado una ciudad a la que llamar 'mi lugar'.
I've been living for a few days now in Valencia, too 😁 the weather is so niiice! So much serotonin ☀️ I really love it here, but I cannot tell if it feels like home yet (for sure this needs some time) 🏡 thanks for your video!! 😊
I'm glad your having fun and have a great year 😄😄😄😁😁😁😁
I've actually lived where I'm at currently longer than I have in any other dwelling since moving out of my parent's house. I've noticed how increasingly uncomfortable with leaving my comfort zone I've become as a result. I got comfy, and appreciated being able to solidify and improve my living my situation, but now I feel a little calcified in place. A long time ago I lived in Japan for a few months, and it was amazing. I had a lot of things go haywire in my life before going (unrelated to the trip) and I wish I'd recovered from that more before going. But I still had a really rich experience - it was the first time I left my hometown for more than a week, and I'm super stoked that it wasn't just moving within my state or country, but it was international :D I'd love to do something like that again. I feel ready, but I have things that keeping me where I am (the worldwide hurdle aside). Time to get creative without jet-setting, for now!
Love your sweater 😍
Sooo inspiring video... Actually next week Im flying to Valencia for a semester abroad and I'm hoping that will be the start full of travel and adventures!
Omg Eva welcome to Valencia. I hope you have the best time here, it's such an amazing city:)
@@LucyAlllan thank you sweetie 🌈
Oh very interesting Lucy, really inspiring
Thank you my friend :)
Hi everyone!
I'm Christian, i'm 20 and i'm from Italy🇮🇹
I absolutely agree to what she Is saying.
When i finished my secondary school I didn't want to go to university immediately, but travel a bit so i decided to go to germany, where i spent a year.
I suggest to everyone to do experiences like this because they really help you in everything and you have the opportunity to meet a lot of beautiful and different humans to share all your love, passions and dreams.
This experience really helped me to choose what i wanted to study and so now i'm at university enjoing this new life and meeting new people.
I can't wait to finish uni to travel again discovering new places and sides of me that i don't know yet:)
I’ll be living abroad in the Netherlands hopefully later this year! Sometimes it feels scary and crazy but I think it’s gonna be great : )
Sounds like so much fun, I hope you have the best time :)
Wow beautiful video 👌 enjoyed your take
Great video! I always love hearing your perspective on things. For me, I'd love to travel but I struggle w/ tourettes which makes things a little difficult. So instead, I mostly try learning about other cultures from home!
Also curious, where did you stay when you visited the US??
I am from İstanbul/Turkey. After high school i took gap year and moved to Germany. It was literally the best decision i have ever made. By the way if u get a chance to visit Istanbul ( i think u should visit haha İstanbul is magical) let me know. I would love to meet u and show u some beautiful places.
So are you doing your undergrad in germany?
I am from the UK and also living in Spain at the moment! In the province of Almeria, I actually visited Valencia in the December puente
Ahh how good! I hope you’re enjoying Almeria🥳
👍💕Good luck and everlasting brilliance
I've lived on the south coast of the UK for a while and i've learned so much from doing so. It wasn't necessarily the best time in my life, but i couldn't wish for a better learning experience
Wow, the south coast of England is beautiful, I bet with covid it hasn't been too great though. Sometimes any experience is better than no experience, although I hope your situation improves :)
@@LucyAlllan it definitely is! I actually had to leave because of covid. It just wasn't as great as it could be because of my mindset back then. Much better mindset now tho! :)
Great video. I agree don’t live in a place just because you were born there or your parents lived there. I can’t wait to move to live abroad (even if it is later on in life eh hmm). Keep up the good work Lucy and your hair looks fab
Thanks lol, cut it myself :)
Btw, I really like your hairstyle 😊
you're too kind, thank you!!!
Hello. You've seen everything, except the far East. I haven't seen the Far East either. A friend of mine used to say that he had seen the world without seeing the far east. Thanks. for this beautiful video.
I dont think there is anything on this world that can enrich your life as much as travelling does!
could not agree more, I have learned so much from living abroad :)
After having traveled to over 60 countries and lived on 5 continents over the last 20 years, I COULD NOT AGREE WITH YOU MORE HOW TRAVELING CHANGES ONES PERSPECTIVE IN LIFE!!! you definitely have the travel bug bad now 😉
excellent! What cool life experience you must have :)
the bath in budapest 😍
omg so fun!!
Can you make a video about finding a job in Spain? I'm very curious also what are you doing and how earning money, because sometimes finding a job in your home country can be difficult, so I can't even imagine how it is in different place ;D
Well for most Asians, I've noticed indulging into more than 2 languages making the life bit complex when talking to others, mixing all at once... It sounds crazy
I totally agree! It can be hard to manage for sure, you have to have separate parts of the brain for separate languages I feel’
I’m going to move to Swiss in about a month for at least three years. I’m moving to French part of the country and I’m not speaking French yet at all. How do you find a jod when you have language limits as you spoke about? Are there any tips and tricks where to begin? :)
I have to ask, what is the process like post-brexit now? I was travelling and working abroad pre-brexit so it was a breeze but something like doing another ski season, most if not all applications are saying EU passports only. How do you find getting work/visas and everything in europe?
I dream of living in the UK and Austria. I was born in Switzerland, but my parents are from AT and UK so I would love to have family near me.
You have the advantage that you might have family there to give you a room to stay in for a bit! So cool :)
@@LucyAlllan Thing is I have a husband that does not want to move. If I leave, I leave him in another country 😔
Nice! 😉
ur pretty nice :)
@@LucyAlllan i know right?
I'm only 18, but I know I don't want to stay in the UK for the rest of my life. If anyone has any inspiration I'd love to hear it; excited to see where I'll end up.
Valencia is a great city for young Brits! Theres lots of us here, but it's very easy to integrate with the Spanish community too
@@LucyAlllan It's so kind of you to respond, thank you for the advice. I'm planning on doing interrail this spring, so in that case I may give Valencia a visit to check it out.
I managed to go on international exchange through my studies. Not sure if you're looking at doing uni or anything like that, but if you are and see a chance like that, take it!
Really like your accent Nice video
did you learn all of the different languages? if you did how into depth did you learn them? love ur channel ❤️🩹
I am actually doing a language video next week so stay tunes, but yes I already recommend learning the language when you travel by taking evening classes, lingoda and going to language exchanges :)
I wonder, do you think it is especially needed to be abroad?
I don't know if it's because the UK doesn't have too many big cities to decide from so you want to go abroad or is it because you need it to be massively different?
Things like learning how the banking system of another country works seems not so interesting too me, of course learning another language is a big bonus of abroad, I just wanna ask if just moving cities would satisfy you. For example, if you had to move again, would you go to another city in Spain now? Or does it need to be another country again?
Sometimes it's even 4 kisses with the old generation in France! Well, it was..
Which is just too much contact for me Haahah!
Ever been to The Netherlands?
Yes twice ! Rotterdam and Amsterdam
@@LucyAlllan That's nice!
