Used this maneuver consistently since i was taught at the age of 18. The lady was impatient and reckless which put them in way more danger than his lane straddling.
No they arent though, They are never once in the left lane to start with. They should of remained in the right lane all the way down. All this does is make it look like hes turning into the left lane after clearing the parked cars on the road. it was totally pointless to drive into the middle of the lanes to begin with.
@Hoos the video starts with them already half way down the road and they don't get a chance to pull back into the left because she starts driving like a knob so it becomes about staying safe at that point. If they were in the right lane as you say then why would she have attempted to pass on the right side and nearly cause an accident? It's drivers like you that help build confidence for learners (like myself). Example of this: first time I drove on a road of 80km an hour, there was a very sharp right turn, and my foot slipped off the break (as I was feathering it to slow down) and slapped the gas. Without losing control of the car, I was able to fix my footing in time to navigate the sharp turn without further problems, and had it not been for the drivers behind me keeping a safe distance, we all would've been in trouble. (They understood that I was a new driver and gave me plenty of space to make mistakes without putting themselves at risk).
I’m sure the guy gets into it with a lot of psychos riding with his students. People have no patience on the road especially for new drivers who make tiny mistakes

Does anyone know where lane straddling is advised? AFAIK, you should drive in a predictable way, driving in middle of two lanes is unpredictable, whereas being in lane 2 to pass obstacles in lane 1 is very predictable. Lane straddling would be limited to very brief obstacles (e.g., one parked car).
There's always multiple parked cars in left hand lane on these 2 lane roads in Liverpool as they don't have yellow lines. Straddling shows that you want to move back into lane 1 when it's clear to the cars behind. She's just the type of person that carnt drive with somone infront of her

When i took my final test, he argued with the inspector who was watching both of us and marking the instructor. They hated each other. I'll never forget that he passed me despite the instructor saying he couldn't do the test because there were bald tyres. Dude took a house key with enough tread, also taught me about wear marks in the tyre's and how to tell if they were bald or not. I hope he had a good life that dude, over 30 years ago now. Glad he taught me enough to stay alive!
Straddling lanes on a dual carriageway can be considered defensive behavior because it creates a buffer zone around your vehicle, providing more space and reaction time to avoid potential hazards. By positioning your vehicle between lanes, you increase your visibility to other drivers and reduce the risk of being side-swiped or forced off the road by vehicles merging or changing lanes abruptly. Additionally, straddling lanes can discourage aggressive drivers from attempting dangerous maneuvers such as squeezing into tight spaces or tailgating, as they perceive less room for error. Overall, straddling lanes on a dual carriageway is a defensive strategy aimed at maximizing safety and minimizing the likelihood of accidents.
@@EDSDrive this don't make sense amigo I'm all ears to a better explanation. It provides more space for them to think they can squeeze through, you said the opposite.

They were driving between lanes by the instructors admission. The only time that's allowed is when you're making a lane change or driving an oversized vehicle that literally won't fit in one lane. Instructor should be sacked for this upload.
You are supposed to straddle the middle lane when passing parked vehicles in the left hand lane that do not completely block the left hand lane but do not leave enough room to pass safely by. The reason being that if you go completely in to the right hand lane then someone might try to pass you on the left because they misjudge how much space they have and then cause an accident. By straddling both lanes you block both lanes and prevent anyone from passing you.
@jimmydesouza4375 It is not your place to drive in a way that would 'block' or 'prevent' another road user doing anything. A driver instructor shouldn't teach that, an examiner wouldn't expect you to do that on your test, it is not advised in the Highway code - it's not a should and definitely not a must.
Lane straddling is reserved for large vehicles typically on approach of a tight turn. If you're in a car, lane straddling is not a common or necessary practice. You need to choose a lane; you cant occupy both. Lady is right, but she reacted terribly, and should learn some patience.

@@muddyboy999 No, there are cars parked in the left lane so you drive in the right lane. You do not swerve between lanes and get angry at someone else who you almost crashed into.
Theres no chance there's enough room to pass the red parked red car and stay in the left lane. Straddling the lanes would indicate to the cars behind that you intend to pull back into the left lane as soon as its clear, learner driver might take couple extra seconds to do this as there not as quick checking there mirrors and blind spot. She then slows when past them till they catch up and cut across infont, making a learner break to avoid a crash. Come on, we've all been a learner few seconds patience and she would have been past him!
I'm confused though, If the left hand lane is obstructed, why wouldn't you just put your car in the right hand lane, giving the left even more room for safety? I give learners loads of room, and I don't agree with how she drove, but I can't understand why they was "Straddling lanes" when at no point even at the end of the clip, they even entered the "left hand lane".
@kinkaito5433 if you were intending to take a left turn but couldn't be in left lane due to obstructions, straddling then indicating would be the correct thing to do rather than coming across from the right lane as people behind would assume you were just indicating to pull into the left lane and not expect you to slow down. Also, if the obstructions are only brief, i.e., a couple of seconds to pass it, you don't have to worry about someone moving into you blind spot as its clear what you are intending to do. I can see what your saying this isnt happening in this video, and I think they pulled in the right hand lane at the traffic lights just to get next to the offending car as they knew it would be good content for the channel...

As a retired driving instructor, I can tell you that an "L" plate is a red rag to a bull for some people. Or should I say bully! Someone commented above that teaching how to deal with these situations is just as important as any other driving skill, and it really is.
Yes, but he's not teaching very well in terms of practical driving. There is NO EXCUSE for straddling lanes. Being in the OUTSIDE lane due to upcoming obstructions, yes. But by straddling that's making intentions unclear and were this a driving test the poor learner would have failed for that.

Driver and instructor are spot on. Left lane is blocked by parked cars, you are allowed to straddle the lane until it is safe to return. Been driving for 20 years, no accidents, no tickets, no fines.
In the end it doesn't matter who's right or not, it becomes a matter of safety and clearly that girl has never been taught patience and understanding. He's a learner, how is he meant to learn if not out on the road. People just have no empathy or consideration for others these days and it's sad to see. Everyone's just in a rush to get to their destination regardless of others.
@@markmiller330 The video starts with them moving from the right lane into the middle of the road where the parked cars are "Supposedly because this is the safe thing to do"?
When he gets into the middle of the lanes, it looks like he is either coming to stop in the left lane or trying to take a chance and squeeze through the lane with the parked cars. it even opens up a cars width where the woman initally tried to overtake "yes to early but got a cars width through". Even at the end of the video they never once pull into the left lane and move back into the right. The entire thing was pointless and dangerous in its self. All it achieved was. "Oh look hes moving into the left lane, Im going to try and squeeze through..."
I agree with the Woman here. Completely bizare to just sit in the middle of the lanes. When he started in the right and finished there.
If you did that here in the USA the police would pull you over and accuse you of being drunk or high on drugs. I can't believe such crazy behavior is taught on your side of the pond. Pick a lane and allow faster cars to pass.

No matter who’s at fault, it’s a low act cutting off and menacing someone who is just learning to drive.
As a driver I remember being under instruction and how nervous I was. As a result I now give learners wide berth and extra patience so they have room to make mistakes without endangering me or themselves. We all started somewhere.
Same, I found learning to drive tough, so if there's a learner, I try and give them more space and time (as really you should...)
This youngman just got a real driving lesson it even included the types of people that you deal with in everyday drives!😂
And a great example of keeping your cool by the instructor ❤
I’m sure the guy gets into it with a lot of psychos riding with his students. People have no patience on the road especially for new drivers who make tiny mistakes

But what the woman did beggars belief especially with it being a learner driver
Learners can be frustrating on the road, but everyone had to learn. To do that to someone learning to drive is an absolute disgrace to that horrible woman.
Why are they frustrating they are in a car with big red L signs giving other road users information to hold bad and show respect, not too much to ask.
Whilst I don't like being stuck behind a learner in the sense that it's holding me up I have no issue with them and have never got annoyed with them. Sometimes I do think to myself "really? The instructor has asked them to parallel park on this busy road?" - but again I wouldn't take it out on the learner.
Fully qualified drivers however are fair game. I don't look for trouble but I'll inform somebody if I think they're driving like a knobjockey.

@Leidolfrnah that’s a shit answer
There's always multiple parked cars in left hand lane on these 2 lane roads in Liverpool as they don't have yellow lines. Straddling shows that you want to move back into lane 1 when it's clear to the cars behind. She's just the type of person that carnt drive with somone infront of her
@@robertmather7696 indicating to move over once it's clear would indicate you want to move back. Straddling lanes makes it less clear which lane you intend to drive in, and serves to obscure the obstruction in lane 1. Also, in the event the traffic flow stops, straddling lane 1 would make it less safe for bikes in lane 1 to make progress.
Your meant to stay in the left lane. When cars are parked on the left you are meant to straddle the lane until your able to go back to the left lane.
@@j1a2h3 my original question: where did you get the advice. I can't find it in the highway code

I've never heard this straddling lanes deal, that I can remember, except as a HGV driver. Doesn't seem entirely logical.

@@SineN0mine3They were in the left lane, but moved out to pass parked vehicles.
“No” killed me
Poor kid. That would make me never want to get back on the road
Lane straddling is reserved for large vehicles typically on approach of a tight turn. If you're in a car, lane straddling is not a common or necessary practice. You need to choose a lane; you cant occupy both. Lady is right, but she reacted terribly, and should learn some patience.

I give learners loads of room, and I don't agree with how she drove,
but I can't understand why they was "Straddling lanes" when at no point even at the end of the clip, they even entered the "left hand lane".
