My whole low waste journey started when I got pregnant with my first kiddo. I decided to cloth diaper due to the finances I would save... and it opened my eyes to a whole new world lol! When I made the decision to cloth diaper my baby, I thought well I'll just buy postpartum pads too... and so started my zero waste period routine.
It's funny how all the things you mentioned (breastfeeding, diy purees etc) I just did because it was more cost effective.
Also, I have a 4, 3 and 2yr old. My 2yr old just potty trained, and my set if diapers I bought for my first lasted all the way to him. 4yrs later and my cloth diapers (and cloth pads for that matter) are still going strong and saving me money!

There are so many ways low waste living saves money! I feel that, so much of my childhood was "low waste" but really I just had a frugal mom. So cool how you were able to last the set of diapers through 3 kiddos!

We just use wash cloths as wipes. It's what my grandma and mom did. Works great! Also, I wouldn't recommend period underwear for the first couple days of postpartum bleeding. PP blood can have a very unpleasant smell to it. I used disposables during my heavy days at first then switched to my cloth pads once the odor went away. Also, if the silicone milk storage bags don't work for you and you have to go with disposables, go with Kiinde. You can pump directly into them, freeze them and then they pop into a bottle attachment. You can get 1 bottle attachment (which takes a lot less energy to produce than multiple bottles) and pop the bags in! Then you can clean them out and use them for puree pouches!
You can also get reusable breast pads. Trust me. If you leak, get them!
And one last thing: save the recieving blankets and burp rags and use them as your kids get older as reusable napkins and tissues. You can also reuse cloth diaper inserts to clean up potty messes when they're potty training.

Agreed! I did all these things too, but only used disposable pads for postpartum because I love my menstrual cup and didn’t want to invest in reusable pads just for postpartum. Cotton breast pads for the win too, but I needed to put some olive oil on my nipples so they didn’t get stuck to the pads, lol!

YES! I was just thinking about how there aren't many eco-minimalists who have children. Let's be honest, minimalism with children is a little different from minimalism without children. Thank you so much for this! I already use cloth diapers ❤️

Cloth diaper advice: I'd recommend buying your cloth diapers used instead of new. I've bought all of mine on Mercari and Facebook Marketplace, and I've only spent $300 total on diapers, wipes, and wet bags for TWO KIDS because they were secondhand. Cloth diapers really last a long time, so you'll mostly get a durable product.

I spent less and bought my cloth diapers/wet bags/washcloths all new from eBay. No, they weren’t locally made, but they were really good quality with really cute patterns and worked really well. I still have them in case I decide to have a third... Cloth diapering doesn’t have to cost a lot upfront :)

The biggest waste of money and resources is buying new clothing for kids, my kid is now 13 and I have only had to buy him new clothing "maybe" 10 times in his life. Bringing your kids along on the zero waste journey is the best thing you can do, they pick up the information so fast.

Great video! So helpful as a mom. My kiddo loves picking out toys from the thrift store. Another perk is that the toys are usually not packaged so he can spend time playing with them to see what kinds he likes. Another thing I do since he is still young, and might stop working when he hits 8 and older, is instead of getting rid of a toy he has lost interest in, I store it for a while and reintroduce it. He usually doesn’t remember it and thinks it’s new, or enjoys a dose of nostalgia at playing with it again.

Great video! One of the lovely things about becoming a parent is the sharing and community that comes along with it- we were given so many second-hand clothes for my daughter that we didn't have to buy a thing for her until she turned one! Now that she's older, I'm trying to pay it forward by passing on her baby things to friends who are expecting.
Just a note on maternity pads- in the UK at least, you're advised to use maternity pads initially so that you can monitor levels of blood loss in case of postpartum haemorrhage. There's a company here called Natracare that make plastic-free maternity pads- there might be something similar in the US.

👏👏👏👏 I have tried to be zero waste as a parent, my daughter is now 7 years old and I think that we are doing pretty well. If you need baby car seat, pram, cot, high chair, carrier etc ask family and friends if they have one that you can borrow. Our pram and car seat came from my sister, our cot and high chair from family, we borrowed 3 different baby carriers and only liked one of them. Cloth diapers in a dry bag when you are out of the house keep smells locked in, no problems. I breast feed and then when she started solids I would make my own pureed baby food, it was easy. Steam fruit and vegetables and use an emersion blender then use ice cube trays to freeze the food, when you need them defrost and you are good to go. We also got given stainless steel baby cutlery set, we only had one and it's still going. We also had a little veggie garden and my daughter loved picking gooseberries off the bush and eating them, she would help water and harvest cherry tomatoes and lettuce and passion fruit 😁. I think that your list was very comprehensive 👍😊, don't forget that you can also buy second hand furniture for them as well as sporting gear, especially bicycles, we are on the 4th one in 4 years 🤦🙄🙄🙄, kids grow fast, 2 have been sold and one was given to a younger cousin. Don't forget to also try to buy baby toiletries that are as natural and organic as possible. It's totally doable you just have to be committed 😉

    • @TheSimpleEnvironmentalist
      @TheSimpleEnvironmentalist  2 года назад +3

love the idea of borrowing since things like prams and car seats aren't a forever item. SECOND HAND EVERYTHING!!! Thanks so much, Ana :)

Another great idea for breast milk storage thats more cost effective are these one ounce ice cube like trays made for hreast milk. You fill it up, freeze it, then put it in a reused zip lock or stasher bag. You can keep track of the ounces easier, and you can reuse the trays as ice cube trays when you're done feeding!
    Love this video!

  • @bethn2836

There are also baby stores where you can exchange your old baby gear/clothes for cash or credit, and then shop from their selection of second hand baby items. One where I live is called Kid to Kid. We're thrift store/Facebook marketplace people though. 😂
Mostly I've found that a lot of "essential" baby items really aren't all that essential. Before making a purchase, I try to think of how many stages of our child's growth an item will continue to be useful. I've found this has helped us make wiser choices.

    • @TheSimpleEnvironmentalist

Woah, that is so cool! Love that idea, thanks for sharing! So true, there are so many baby products out there and as someone who has never had a baby, I don't understand half of them, they seem wasteful to me (I'm thinking of the lotion spatula????).

Love that you mentioned re-play! My 4, 2, and 1 year old drink from their sippy cups and they are the best because they're actually leak proof! I don't recommend the cutlery because my boys were able to bend them too easily, but the plates are great, too.
I loved the idea of asking each guest to buy one cloth diaper. My issue is that people don't listen! We did not even have a shower for any of our kids because we had everything we needed, and people still gave me random stuff from the store.

Also I'm teaching a sustainability unit (focusing on composting) to my students with the goal that my students will teach the other students of the school on how to compost their school lunches. Obviously the parent would know their kid(s) best in this area, but don’t be too quick to dismiss the "weird" swaps too. My niece and nephew use the bidet at home, and were very disappointed to learn that the school bathrooms did not come equipped with "butt sprayers" 😅
