Do I dare to eat a peach? Hahaha 🍑 Really looking forward to your content coming this new year. I’m only buying myself something when I do something really good. I’m binning buying when I’m stressed or sad… which is a HUGE thing for me. I loved your three truths. Especially three. Wow. Here’s to 2022.

I've just been here etherized upon a table. I can totally respect these goals, I experienced the same exact thing (spending), in ABSURD amounts, and last year my only goal was to just stop it, make it come to a halt. This year I just want to use the things I have, including art supplies, and just DO more things rather than squirrel things, and make the reading more quality rather than trying to read new just because.

Like other people in the comments, my major goal this year to continue reducing my unread owned books. One night in 2020 -and on a complete whim- I added the books I owned to a spreadsheet. By the time I was done, I realized I had over 200 unread books. It was absolutely ridiculous. Even if I exclusively read from my pile, it would take me 6-10 years to read them all at my current pace. That stopped my book buying almost completely. I'm curious to see how the short-term book buying ban works for you. Reading is insignificant in the scale of things, but it does bring joy and, like you said, it can be as simple as that.

This is the first year where I'm putting limits on book buying---only quarterly and based on my own weird mathematical equation and I gotta say I already feel better. ☺️

I remember that last year you also decided not to buy books until you had finished reading your TBR ? or was it the year before ? As for the second goal (keep reading) it's a great goal ! Reading makes us happy and during this period of time, it's definitely one of the best goals. As for books as "essential items" well, in France, they were declared essentials after the first lockdown, people were craving reading books so now the bookstores and libraries always stay open and this year the book sales have (as last year) augmented as far as +20 to 30% - our bookstores are still open and new ones are opening - which means that people need this escapism, need books to remain sane during this pandemic. As for your expenses, I don't have extra lipstick, or shampoo - I buy clothes maybe twice a year - I don't spend much - my only expense is books. I have bought a few because I got some money at Christmas and because I have a few challenges coming up and I need these books. My goals are to read Dostoyevsky's books, read two classics a month, read my TBR and keep my own challenges (read an Indigenous author every month and in May read short stories collections). Nothing else. Oh, read less best-sellers or hyped books too.Looking forward to watching your next video !

I'm right there with you. My goal is to do what I can, but quiet my mind from things I cannot change, to simplify & find some peace, to concentrate on joy for myself & where I can bring it to others.

I definitely need to work on divorcing buying things with good/bad life events! I’m also focusing on reading what’s on my shelves this year, I have another move coming up this year and no way do I want to be carting this many books around with me again 😅

I've been trying to do a 5 read 1 in book buying quota. But honestly I haven't been keeping myself to it because I am weak. So I need to find a way to keep myself accountable, but I haven't yet found a way to make myself keep to the goal.

Love your goals and am also currently not buying new books to read my own. I think art especially in this time has value. What would we all have done at home without at least the comfort of movies, games, books, music etc.? Books are considered essential goods here in Germany during the pandemic and therefore bookshops have less restrictions than some other shops, which to me seems alright although of course I also get your point. :)

hi, i so rarely comment but had to, to tell you that i decided to not buy books for a set period of time this year. i've never done this before but the consumerism and acquiring of certain material things like books just needs to slow down in my life. it's a relief to have made the decision. thank goodness for libraries! also i have non celiac gluten intolerance, was tested by endoscopy and all the rest of it. it gets easier to adapt as time goes on even though the learning curve was sharp at first, and i barely think about it now years later except when traveling which isn't happening anytime soon for obvious reasons.

"Keep reading". I've been struggling with exactly that during the last 2 years. It seems I'm unable to be distracted from the current state of things for long enough to become absorbed in other thoughts. I continue to purchase books, but read less than ever. I think I'll join you in the 3 month no book buy. My TBR shelves are already full to bursting. Thank you!

My goal for this year is to read the books I already have. 2021 was a big book buying year and I have enough to keep me going for a while. I want to continue reading classics (started Anna Karenina New Years Eve and am enjoying it), non-fiction, and books in translation especially by Croatian and Japanese authors.

I’m sending you all the good vibes and I hope your plans for 2022 come to fruition!
My plan for this year (as far as my reading life goes) is to worry less about the # of books I read, and more about the quality of the experience. I don’t have the confidence to start a RUclips channel but I also decided to write at least a little review for myself after finishing each book: I love going back to those after a while and see what my fresh impressions were, and it also allows me to spend some time reflecting on what I read, rather than jumping to the next book on the list as if I had a deadline to meet. Oh! And my last goal is to read more Central/Eastern European authors! I’ve been living in Hungary for years but my knowledge of local literature is far too basic. I’ve been making a list of the books you recommend and I think I have a pretty good year of European writing ahead of me ☺️

I related to so much of what you said in this video from wanting to simplify goals, looking to find ways to stop the treat yourself cycle, to being unsure of what my relationship is with books. I often find that I take it very seriously and get very upset when life gets challenging, uncertain, or scary and I suddenly feel like reading is futile and books are ultimately meaningless in comparison to real world challenges. It's hard to feel that when on the flip-side reading and books bring me so much joy and can be so fun and fulfilling. I have found that this cycle of being obsessive about books and reading and projecting more meaning on to them than they contain to make myself feel better always ultimately fails and I end up feeling like you said, how small books really are. This cycle always leads to reading slumps because I end up feeling that I just need a break from reading. But I've been grappling with how to take my relationship with books less seriously so that I can ultimately actually read more and also be more okay with books not being able to save the world but continue to love and enjoy them anyways.

Love the blouse. I’m only going to try to read 52 books this year. One book a week. Use the library as I can’t afford to buy. I’m not going to make loads of plans as we’re still in midst of a pandemic. Happy New Year 🥳☘️👋🍀🎉

I really enjoy the goal "keep reading"-its something I've definitely struggled with over the past couple years.
My only "true" bookish goal for this year is to end the year with fewer unread books that I own than I've began it with. Which means if I end the year with even one fewer unread owned book that will be a success, but I anticipate even that being difficult. Last year I "acquired" over 100 books (most of them digital) and read fewer than 40 books total. That ratio is doubly broken by the fact the majority of books I read were either rereads or not owned. My strategy is to try an end each month with fewer unread owned books than I began, marking audible/Kindle emails as spam, turning off sales notifications, and avoiding bookstores in general ☹️. I have to do this because I know myself and know I can argue around any limitation I set for myself when confronted with a sale.
I would also ~like~ to complete the 52 Book Challenge, but I'm not considering that a goal

My main reading goal is along the same lines as yours. I haven’t finished anything since even before the pandemic, I’ve tried to, but… and I have forgotten how much joy books can bring. So, my only goal is to get back to reading.
Let all our hopes for 2022 come true🌺

my biggest goal for this year is to stoppp buying books just because i hear people talk highly of them. in 2020/2021 i got very sucked into booktube influencing and bought & read (or just unhauled) so many books that were just ok. i want to be more intentional with my time and money and seek out things i know i will love wholeheartedly, not things other people have enjoyed. also, to read more nonfiction and poetry

Great video! One of my goals for 2022 is to stop buying novels. I don’t enjoy them or hold on to them as much as poetry and non-fiction so I will resist the urge to keep up with what’s trending in fiction!

Super excited for any tbr content! I have around 50 unread books but I also work at a library so I get distracted by shiny new things. I hoard both purchases and library books like I’m never going to have anything to read ever again. I would love to be the kind of person who only has five-ten unread books.

I agree: 2020 2021 has been challenging to thinking people. It's been an assault on reason. With each successively bizarre event there is the possibility that everything upon which we built ourselves is turned to jelly. Yet there remain those of us who insist they can make sense of things. On the other hand, the weather here in sunny south Florida has been absolutely glorious the past few days, and that's really helped me stay sane.
