      I remember when Emmerdale used to have the word "Farm" on the end and was only on 2 nights a week, so we'd get more variety on the telly than bleeding soaps!

    Iconic - just every ounce of it...Bruce, the intro graphics - the LWT intro graphics and jingles, back then the landscape of ITV in its old form really was dynamic and it showed!

    The mrs is in the living room watching the new one with Alan Carr and celebrities. I'm in the kitchen watching the original and best, this is true british weekend television the way it should be done 😊

    Just seeing the new LWT ident, it was the beginning of a new era for itv. This was the final series from 1987, and didn't return until 1994, with a complete make over. Bruce was a tv quiz legend

    Great show, one of my faves when I was a kid growing up in the 80s - had a slight stop in my heart when the opening titles were on; I'm sure this was screened back in it's heyday on a Friday Night (could be wrong).
    Remember a younger version of my dad who enjoyed this show opening a beer and a packet of peanuts :-)

      I agree, this is when TV was good, but I think Play your cards was also shown on Saturdays before or after being shown on Fridays, either way, good quality TV, not like now with the X factor, BGT and reality shows.

    Trip down memory lane, I have seen a lot of game show host's here in the US
    except for maybe Merv who might come close to Bruce there's no one who was
    as fun and entertaining I did not even care for the prizes it was just his nonstop
    zingers and cheerful banter.....and lol at that waterproof camera as a prize but
    it was a pretty cool thing in 1987.... Good Times in the UK

    I think the 87 series was aired the same year Nicolas Lyndhurst starred in The Two Of Us ITV sitcom on a Friday night, which was another LWT production.

      The Thames set remained the same all the way through albeit some very minor lighting/colour changes. Around this time Strike it Lucky was massive so I'd imagine viewing figures on this were beginning to fall and hence the last season.

    For decades I have been annoyed when Bruce says a Jack is a good card (like he did in this game) but a 5 is a bad card (as he did in this game). They’re both the same! A five has 2-3-4 lower than it and a Jack has a Q-K-A higher than it! Same mathematical probability of losing!

      Laura Kruk Lol, no there's no dubbing for movies in Britain. We get exactly the same as you. There's not a huge amount of difference between American English and British English. Just the way some words are said. Like in the US, for tomato you say To-may-toe but we say To-mah-to. For some US documentaries that are shown in the UK the original narrator is replaced by a British voice. Deadliest Catch is one such example

      No, you're right. There's at least one episode on RUclips from 1980 (first series, with single contestants and Brucie with a handheld mic) where Brucie goes into the audience and got two people to play a quick question worth a tenner before the credits rolled.

    I wish they were given 50 pounds for the match & start the bonus round with 50 pounds & 3 cards. Then on the next level the winning couple gets another 50 pounds & 3 more cards. And make the minimum bet 10 pounds until the last card on the last level when they risk at least half of their betting money.

      If you're going to 'give someone some stick' it means you're going to criticise them (often to their face) or talk to them in a disiplinary (however you spell it) way. It's generally done after they've done something that personally offends you.

      You could not be farther from the truth Kevin. I had the pleasure of meeting Bruce on a number of occasions, and you are so wrong. The man was so kind and considerate, which may not translate to what you see on screen, but he always cared about the audience and contestants.
