Just a thought for the important info, perhaps because I have ongoing health problems and am paranoid of accidents/incidents happening when I'm away from home lol, but it may be worth adding in the contact details for an English speaking medical centre 'just in case' of course hoping that it is never needed. I'm one of those people who would rather have the info and not need it, than need it and not have it.
I can only imagine how emotional your family's trip to Japan is going to be, but I know you will all do everything within your power to honour Michael's memory and visit the places he would have done, although I believe he will be there with you. I hope you all have a wonderful trip and it is everything that you hope it will be.

In Tokyo I loved the Tokyo skytree which is the 2nd tallest building in the world. I spent 3 days at Tokyo Disney and Tokyo Sea. Nakamise Dori was an incredible shopping street on the way to Senso ji Temple. We spent 7 days in Tokyo of our month long trip to Japan. The best part though was seeing our son who has lived there for 9 years now. He is married to a Japanese girl and they are expecting their first baby.

I just got back from 3 weeks in Japan on Thursday. It was a wonderful trip. Would be happy to give you some pointers on things if you want ( IC cards, hand towels, google maps and google translate vs Apple Maps/ translate,etc). I loved Kyoto which is an easy Shinkansen trip. In Tokyo, I like Team Labs in Odaiba, bonus is that it’s outside of the “city” part and you can see the skyline and all the lights. The unicorn gundam is there and he puts on a little show every hour or so. The best part of the trip was definitely the food- everything we ate was wonderful! Go to Loft (there are several) for stationery supplies, pens, stickers, washi, Post it’s, etc. Finally, one last piece of advice, Tokyo is an enormous city. Be flexible with your plans and if you can’t see everything you want to see, be easy on yourself. FOMO will be real and you just need to lean into not being able to do it all.There are 1000 distractions that will pull you in 1000 directions. Bring excellent walking shoes! Have fun!!!
I've been to Japan many many times! Take the train to Kamakura and see the Great Buddha. Go shopping at Daiso and 100 Yen Shops such cool stuff! Shibuya Crossing, Harajuku, Yoyogi Park, Shinjuko Gyoen National Garden, Senso-Ji Shrine. I could just keep listing places. In the spring, when the Sakura are in bloom it "snows" pink petals. Breathtakingly beautiful. Enjoy your trip!

Mary Ellen, I hope this trip is everything you dreamed it to be. I have a suggestion for the meal plan pages. On the front, date the days and write in the restaurant name and location you visited. On the back you can put what you ate there and rate the meals! I really like your ideas for this! Thanks for sharing! ❤❤

I am so sorry to hear about your son. It's so hard to lose someone, especially for someone so young.
Hope this trip turns out to be much more meaningful & rewarding than what you had even imagined it to be. Such a long flight can be overwhelming, just don't over-think it. I've survived many many 22 & 24-hr trips with 2 toddlers. You will be proud of yourself when you look back at it.

I think your trip to Japan is so beautiful in honor of your son. This video gave me an idea for a memory keeping mini journal for storing memories, photos, doodles, etc. of my mother. I used to buy her Japanese Cherry Blossom lotion from Bath and Body Works. My friend is going to order the Southern Peppy notebook for my birthday so I can use it for that purpose. The cover does look like cherry blossoms. Thank you for the idea and inspiration.
Oh my gosh, I love this & all the pages. I wish I could say I've been to Japan. I worked for Sony in San Diego yrs ago. I loved the people that I worked with that was from all different parts of Japan.

So touched by the meaning behind your trip to Japan. I have traveled there many times over the past thirty years and yes it is a wonderful culture. Your life will be changed forever in so many ways. Beyond the tribute to Michael (and without making light of it) there will be so much to enjoy. In fact "enjoy" is an English word in almost constant use by Japanese! I smile to imagine your Planner's Heart and eyes as you step into Itoya Ginza! The first time I did I swore I would get married there but ended up marrying someone whose mother had worked there. Stationary everyplace from bookstores to dollar stores. I encourage you to look into a rail pass. It is not such a long way to Kyoto and worth it. Onigiri (spicy tuna is my favorite) and cold bottled tea from 7/11 or a supermarket will fill you up and save you some money on the go. A bento box on the train to Kyoto is also a treat and experience you should not deny yourself. Ueno zoo is great also and if you fall in love with Japanese prints the National Museum is right there too. What else...Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara, Tokyo is a fun rabbit hole of an electronics store but one where children's toys and beautiful bikes are also sold. The bikes in Japan will steal your heart as surely as the paper goods, fabrics, menu sets and clean subways will. I just know it!
When my husband ( a serious scientist) and I experienced the loss of our parents I asked him if he, as a Buddhist, actually believed in reincarnation. His reply brought me comfort and peace. He said "I believe so. The energy must still be here." I pass this sentiment on to you and your family.

Sometimes when we travel I include a meal plan sheet to write down any fun meals, restaurants, or unique dishes that we tried.

I am watching this while we're in Mexico City. We'll be here till the end of July. I made a travel planner, too. Mine is classic size. Like you, I started off with my itinerary, then my packing list. Next I made "At A Glance" pages, with all the dates listed down the side. My goal is to journal each day, but I know that somedays I'll be too tired, so if I at least list where we went that day, then later I'll remember and will know what to write about for that day. Then, I used the guided journal pages to do daily entries. Some pages have entries for more than one day on them. Other, busier days, take up the full page, (along with stickers). I decorated the pages before we left, but brought extra stickers to use as needed. I love having it here with me. I hope your trip is both fun and healing. ❤
This was a great project to do for your trip! I hope you and your family enjoy visiting Tokyo. You've already received a lot of great ideas of places to visit in and around Tokyo, but try not to do too much in a day. As you said, it will be hot - pace yourself and drink lots! Can't wait to see how your trip goes! Hope you bring back some cool Japanese stationery stuff (washi, stickers, pens, etc.)!

Muji and Daiso for Stationary haul.
I've lived in Okinawa but have never been to mainland Japan. I would say go to the ocean for sure and snorkle if you can. The water is so clear and the sea life is gorgeous. Go to as many 100 yen stores as you can. They call them Daiso in the states but when i lived there it was 100 yen stores. Also, from what i hear even the grocery stores have beautiful paper products. Plus it's fun to see the different fruits and other products they sell.

This looks like a fun planner and I am sure you will have a great time. Never been to Japan but just watching you plan makes me want to plan a trip! I have a question. I made a classic undated, and used stickers for my dates that I printed on the Avery file folder stickers and now there is a huge difference between the top and bottom. I am talking the top where I placed my stickers is an entire 0.5 inch thicker than the bottom of my planner! 🙄 is there a way to even out the pages???

On a trip to Europe with my family I bought a beer in JFK airport while we waited.

Just a general tip for international travel. Know the culture before you go and do your best to abide by their customs and way of life. Oh! Do NOT wear sneakers. It pegs you as an American, which isn't always good.
They definitely wear sneakers in Japan! And I do need proper footwear 😊
Japanese people are well known to be sneaker-heads. They make super cool (and expensive!) sneakers and have a thriving sneaker culture.
