Cool video. And being an English chap who lived in Taichung (I think I lived in the same apartment block you're now living in) and now living back in Blighty, I do remember writing a list of reasons to stay and reasons to leave, to help me decide. There were three reasons to leave Taiwan: 1) Family 2) Dangerous roads, I felt it was just a matter of time before my luck ran out, and 3) Clean air. That's it! Those were the only 3 reasons I could think of, there seemed to so many more to stay. But, now you mention it, I do like my house in the country with carpets, central heating, village pond and Pub. And, the neighbour from hell hadn't really started to rattle his sabre when I left. Really enjoyed this video, I like the style of two contrasting takes on a similar theme.

5:49 This would be my counter argument to staying in HK. I've lost 2 of my favourite newspapers in HK, and I don't read them for their local news, either. Some of their opinion pieces actually were thought-provoking, but the government has shut down Freedom of Press and Free Speech. I'm just thankful that I can read Taiwanese version of Apple Daily.

Hi, Allan, actually we’re in kind of the same situation in many different ways. As a Taiwanese living here in Vancouver Canada for the past 27 years and the family all back home in Taiwan. Many people would not understand why but I chose to follow my heart because in the end, it’s myself to answer to at the end of the day.
One thing I think it’s better living here in Vancouver is the environment and the freedom of the well. Generally speaking, people are more respectful and less judgmental. It’s probably the culture thing, I guess…..

No other place could be as well as the motherland unless was born in a family without love. Without families around you to support you is always a hard life. I think William will understand why you have to live separately, he is a smart boy with a warm heart. Do wish here will be as warm as your home country, a life with positive and sweet memories.

You’re right about driving in Taiwan vs the UK.
I’ve driven both cars and motorbikes in Taiwan and the UK, and there’s a huge difference in driving styles/abilities. As a Brit you definitely need a fair amount of driving experience to deal with the driving styles found in Taiwan, especially in the south of the island.
I think the reason why there’s such a difference in driving style/ability between the two countries is down to how driving is taught. Generally speaking, the UK is much stricter on who passes their driving test, that coupled with plenty of practice on public roads. Something I hope Taiwan would adopt, as getting a scooter license for example is far too easy.

Nice to see a balanced view from a creator! Normally the temptation is to go down the extreme route, as thats what the algorithm prefers! The UK and living anywhere abroad has advantages and disadvantages. Ive got to say the biggest advantage about the UK you have missed though, and this is the famous MEAL DEAL. The ability to walk into a tescos, or sainsburies, or MnS and buy a beautiful sandwich, a delectable drink, and a mouth watering snack all for just around £3. God did I miss that the 8 years I lived in China...
In terms of traffic issues, its so hard to use the UK as a relevant example, because population density in Asian cities is just completely incomparable! Even in London, you get nowhere near the population densities in such a small area, so the roads and transport routes that serve these high density (skyscraper residential blocks) have so much more strain on them! That being said, you are right to say traffic in the UK is an utter joy and beautiful thing compared to Asia.

Also my company lets me visit my family twice a year, and I video chat with my family every week, thus in all at rather young age it’s worth giving myself a challenge to sprint my career.

Hi Allen, thanks for sharing. I am Taiwanese who live in SA currently. I have to admit that the weather, traffic, environment in SA is far better than TW, but the tax rate, convenience, job opportunities, corruption level and security is far worst in contrast. I may suggest that you may encourage your son to explore or even work in TW in the future, and spend money in SA to boost its economy. It is really tough for SA people to find the job, and even worst after SA government implemented BEE policy (Black Economic Empowerment, benefit for black, no discrimination). Most of the SA people I met are likely to find the good jobs outside this country.

There are more after school clubs in the UK for kids, the pavements are better in the UK to walk down ( first time I ever stood in the street and shouted at a super car parked on the pavement was here in Taichung!) . Kids have swings in the UK! There's hardly any swings here? Why??! It was less polluted in the UK ... clothes are cheaper in the UK...Amazon prime is in the UK 🤣. Omg I could go on and on and on. How much are basic food items in Taiwan compared to the UK? Personally I feel the UK is rather expensive and the price is only increasing due to current logistic issues (HGV drivers) and now the implementation of customs on imported goods from Europe (as of the 1st of Jan).
That being said, living anywhere is never as simple as comparing the two nations as a whole, you have to compare cities to get a better picture.

You have talked about the traffic. As a new Nottingham residence from Hong Kong, I am very impressed the manner of most of the drivers in the UK. I think there may be a few reasons the traffic in the UK are safer.
    1. The driving test in the UK is one of the driving test to be passed in the world. Therefore, drivers will try avoid to make any mistake that make them retake the exam.
    2. The regulations, in the UK, the laws for the traffic is tend to protect the weak and more scientific.
    3. Better road design? I am not sure. However, I am wonder the bad road surface in the UK seems not causing any traffic accident.
    4. Law enforcement. in the UK, police actively use the surveillance cam or other technologies to aid their law enforcement on the traffic.
Finally, the attitudes of general drivers are important.

True. That and architecture and nature are the other two I would add. I pretty much agree with both his videos of pros and cons of both places. Not mentioning the people for fear of being a "brown noser" was silly, as Taiwan has the safest, most pleasant culture of any top 50 nation I've been to.

As a Taiwanese living in Scotland. I personally suggest that the fifth point you could point out is rubbish & recycling service in UK. This service is the first thing that I felt impressed after sattled down in Scotland. About traffic problem in Taiwan, you would know the reason if you sign up a driving lesson in Taiwan. You would pass exem in no time. Although it's harder now than 10 years ago, but it's nothing like the one in UK. When I learning driveing in UK, my driving instutor told me that anyone outsite of my car is more importent than me. Therefore as a driver, I need to thnik for people on the road all the time. But you propebly won't see that ofen in Taiwan.

The US government requires twenty percent down payment for getting a mortgage for just about everyone except for the poorest of citizens. That said, I have seen statistics showing many foreigners still manage to buy real estate using bank loans in Taiwan.

Me as a Taiwanese living in London, I will say how British government dealing with vaccinations, NHS covid pass app and rapid flow lateral test is better. For me it’s more efficient than our government.
Another thing is that I barely bring cash with me when I’m out, even corner shops take card. Things might have been changed in Taiwan recently, idk. From what I remember, people still need to use cash a lot in their general lives.
The third thing is transferring money from British accounts to British accounts has no any fees. For example, you can transfer your money from your HSBC account to your Monzo account with no transaction fee(or admin fee?🤣 idk how you’d call it) Again, things might have been changed in Taiwan recently, idk😂 From what I remember, in Taiwan it’s only free when both accounts are from the same bank.
Both countries have their upsides and downsides, I do appreciate that you were doing “why your life in Taiwan is better than life in UK” as well!

Not only the population and the number of car accidents, but also should consider the land area.
You must know that it is not that easy to kill a person by car accident in Sweden, because you may be driving a car all day long without seeing a person, eventually you have to drive to hit a tree to create a “car-accident.”
In a densely populated area in a narrow space, not only car accidents, but also people trampling on people may cause death.
I’m not kidding, imagine if one day all citizen in Hong Kong they leave the building and walk out, there will be no space for standing, we will see the “Human flesh puff pastry”.

If you check it out there are plenty of free caravan parks in taiwan my man.
To get a custom built, fully funky equipped transportable home from china, sth korea and live off the grid is easily affordable.
Keep in mind once you do this sooooo many will copy the concept, at least give it some serious thought.
