Got the deluxe in natural finish and i am so happy with it. It does not reproduce the iconic tele sound and it is obviously "inspired" by the les paul, but it definitely has it's own characteristic sound and delivers the twang! Hi! You could try the Squier Vintage modified Telecaster Deluxe. Search for "HH Telecaster" for some other options. Most will have low output pickups though, which might not be your preference. ☺
Great vid, as usual. Just one small request: Would be great if you always remembered to do clean / no pedal / no OD examples. It lets you clearly distinguish different guitars & pickups, without distortion/OD obscuring and smearing all qualities. (And some of us actually play electric that way!)
@@alistairdimmick2886 Humbuckers were invented _way_ back in the day in order to defeat single coil hum. The penchant for overdriving amps came later, when loud bands of the era started to get used to their quest-for-volume resulting in clipped guitar sounds. And even today, not everyone plays in rock/blues-derived styles; there's _plenty_ of music genres that use clean electric guitar - funk, latin, some country, folk, a lot of pop, jazz and a ton of non-cubby-holeable in-between styles. And they don't always use Fenders. Hey, listen to really early Stones & Beatles - the guitars aren't actually very over-driven, you can distinctly hear the natural tone of each guitar model.
Darrell you really do make the best vids on youtube. Your tone comparison presentations cannot be matched! And now, thanks to you, I have another reason to hunt for guitars; need a telecaster in my arsenal/stable/collection!!
Im just not a humbucker fan. I can pick them out of a mix almost everytime. And for the dreaded 60 cycle hum....get a volume pedal and tell your drummer to play louder....lol i much prefer the clarity of single coils however, i do like those firebird style mini humbuckers but theyre kinda like p90's. But that probably has something to do with pots and the lot. Good vid.
Buttered Biskit The Les Paul Deluxe has mini-humbuckers and are a cool bridge between a LP and Tele, but not so easy to find or pay for. Nice to have two volume and two tone controls too.
I bought an 86 Telecaster new and I've played it ever since. I recently purchased the deluxe and it opened up a different world of tones. There's definitely room for both of these axes in my quiver.
Honestly i don’t really seem to ever like a humbucker in the neck position. I’m more of a single coil guy through and through but i can really get into a humbucker in the bridge and single in neck. I think that is the best combo of both worlds. Great vid i always enjoy your thorough demos!
I like the Standard Telecaster, it has the sound that I would expect from a Telecaster. 😊 I just finally bought one, I have been playing an Taylor for 30 years so this should be fun stepping into an electric. 👍
I've never cared for the look of a Tele and therefore never owned one. Because of your videos and honest display of the capabilities of the species (and a little less bias on my part) I almost feel as if I can't live without one. As for this video....the single coil standard all the way.
I love the traditional Tele setup. In my opinion they got it right the first time. When I want the raw power of humbuckers I reach for a Les Paul which for me... does the dual humbucker thing best. That said, nothing out there can do a Tele like a Tele. The Tele is an awesome instrument and my go to for what it does best. Its simplicity, playability, and tone are astounding.
Actually, I'd suggest a maple neck single coil tele if you're a Les Paul guy. Put some DiMarzio true velvet pickups in it and you'll love it. The reason I say is cuz a tele is as close and as far as you can get from a LP. It's like the single coil version of an LP. I used to own a bunch of guitars, but now I just own 3: my goldtop LP, my tobacco burst tele and my acoustic.
Darrell, You make fine content. Keep it up. In this comparison video, it sounds like you are playing with your amp set up to overdrive with higher input volume - as we do, because it sounds great! As a telecaster owner, I know how to cause amp overdrive, but my interest in the humbucker tele is to hear its cleanest tones. The single coil tele mostly sounds clean. The humbucker version mostly does not, because its higher output is pushing the amp into overdrive. So we mostly do not hear the real clean tones of the HB tele, except for some bridge tones after the 7 minute mark. Perhaps it needed a different amp or amp gain setting for this comparison. I also feel that the Tone knob should be used on a Tele, but most reviewers don't touch it.
Mike Anderson Like Jimi Hendrix, Slash, Ritchie Blackmore, Albert King, YJM, Brian May, John 5, Chuck Berry, and Brian Setzer? They basically play(ed) and were devoted to one model of guitar.
Initially the deluxe had me....but there is something profoundly resonating about the sound of those single coils that haunts me even afterwards. Just WOW. Fantastic video
I agree about the single coils. Very much so. I actually have a Deluxe with Shawbuckers. I like it a lot, it sounds great...but it's not that Tele sound that haunts us
Thank you very much for all your comparisons. It really helps to choose the right guitar, especially when you can only afford one. It has ti be perfect for me. I got sick so no more money but I really enjoy the search for "the one". I fell in love with the squier 50s custom but than I saw what you did to it and now I love it even more. Thanks again, great job.
There was a time I wanted a les Paul in my teens.. that’s what I felt was the rock stars guitar. Bands I listened to like Interpol, social distortion, Jimmy eat world.. all used them. Then I saw Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World began using a telecaster, I was like.. ok move over les I want a tele. This was back in 2013 and now finally in 2020 I finally should be getting one, it’s been ordered and currently on its way to me from the UK. been using a simple cheap but good enough for me Silvertone Stratocaster since 2005. Can’t wait for it to arrive.. it’s a left handed thinline tele, pretty similar to Jim’s guitar but it’s made by revelation guitars. It’s revelation RFT thin line
to me it's the opposite of the best of both worlds. I'm a strat neck pickup humbucker bridge person. my next guitar will be a hard tail strat with that setup.
Hi, just saw this video and thank you. I have an 1983 USA Tele Standard which I am very pleased with. I recently got a Squier Affinity Tele to do some mods on and added a five way switch and middle pickup and set it up like a Strat, and also added a SPDT switch to connect the neck and bridge pickups (like Tele Nashville I think). These mods have made the Squier Tele an interesting beast tone wise.
Darrell, i know this is a old vid. But even here your playing is mesmerizing and your improv makes me wanna buy an album with your playing. Please, some day, tell us all about how you started, when you started, how you learned and your biggest inspirations in Guitar. I really want to learn to play the way and acales you play and just... Be as close to as awesome as you are :)
If you are playing music that doesn't need twang, then the single coil can be problematic. A hardtail strat or tele with a humbucker is a great rock guitar that challenges gibson SGs and les pauls, with better tuning stability and easily swappable parts. A strat with a trem and a humbucker isn't quite as thick and punchy, as another youtubers video shows. To me a telecaster is a just a shape. You can put whatever pickup you want in it. If you want twang you can put a tele pickup in a les paul and it will probably be 95% there. I never understood guitar purists who think that everything leo fender did was perfect from the get go. He had different designs when he went to g&L. If everyone stuck to this "that ain't a tele" or "that ain't a strat" stuff, Eddie Van Halen would have never been the innovator he was. Who told anyone you can't put a humbucker in a strat? F that.
@@TheDmonet I mostly agree but then, what's the point in buying a tele with hh if its purpose is just to replicate a gibson. Why don't you just buy a sg, les paul or any kind of guitar which is supposed to be the best in what it does. No other could ever achieve the sound a tele had with single coils in bridge position. If you remove that, then it's obvious that you better buy a strat because it has a better sound on neck pickups. I mean, I don't know... A tele without a single coil on bridge still has the shape of a tele but what's the point in buying one soundwise?
@@stell4rt I already mentioned why: Scale length, stays in tune better, more easily swappable parts, different feel on the bridge (raised vs flat mount). Less expensive. If it sounds basically like a les paul but you don't like the gibson scale, don't like raised bridges, and want to be able to change a neck out without having to pay a luthier....those are many reasons why someone would choose a tele deluxe over a les paul. As for the strat neck pickup, just put the strat neck pickup in the tele. I think strat hardtails sound better than trems (as does the god of all dad rockers Joe Bonnamassa however you spell it), and a telecaster and strat hardtail are basically the same guitar with one more cutout on the strat. Again, the entire guitar traditionalist thing is one of the most annoying things I"ve ever experienced. "It just ain't no tele without no twang". Why do anyone care if someone wants a tele that doesn't twang? They should be forced to play a les paul. Again EVH should have put an end to the guitar traditionalist nonsense but some people cling to it.
Nothing can bite like a tele at one end. And then sound sweet and soulful at the other end. It's a hell of a guitar. And that's why it's still one of the holy trinity after all these years.
When I play the Tele I always ground my hand on the tailpiece for that hum canceling effect and the Tele wants that kinda musician-instrument connection
YES! I remember asking for this, also I mainly play three tele deluxes so I obviously would pick the deluxe but that regular is just fine! As long as it's a tele, it's good
Darrell Braun Guitar Of course, after all they are the best model of guitar in the world. In fact three simply is not enough, in thinking about getting another one
I had an awesome '97 Telecaster California series in a beautiful fiesta red. The 'California Series' was unique in that it had a Stratocaster neck pickup in the neck position. One of the coolest guitars I ever had and i seriously regret getting rid of it. Probably one of my biggest regrets regarding music and guitars was getting rid of that Tele lol.
Ya know, you have super tone. I've played for many years and a lot of boxes, amps, and guits. I always struggle with finding the perfect eq that sounds stellar all over the neck. I would wager that there are a lot of your subscribers that would like a lesson in getting your Tele tone. I know I would throw in a few bucks for a how-to video, even if you are mastering a mix in a computer-based program. I love your style and your approach. (And, I'm critical about most famous guitar tones)
Yes, the Standard gives the classic Tele tone, but I gotta say I like the "balanced" response of the Deluxe - it sounds more dense and complex in the low end. But I would be more than happy to own either one.
Bridge position is where I live for the most part because I play a lot of rock and punk, the humbuckers growl, the single coils bark. The tele was perfect from the get go, single coils and all
Leo Fender had nothing to due with the Deluxe. It came out in 72 a good while after Leo sold the company. It's pure CBS. It's one of the saving graces of CBS
Neil Aspinall the Telecaster Custom has the humbucker in the neck. It also was released in 72. Kieth installed a PAF in his 52 in 72. The question which was done first? Did Fender release that guitar and was Kieth inspired, or was Fender inspired by Kieth?
I have a -74 Deluxe with original Seth Lover WRHBs and it suits me perfect as my main rythm guitar. Had it since 1984. The sound is great, deep tone with a lot of versatility.
Man, something about your videos really encourage me to play the guitar again. It's really been years but I think I'm ready for a new guitar in my life. Probably gonna get this standard American Telecaster! Thanks for the encouragement!
I prefer the singe-coil version personally. But then again, I'm sure my preconceived notions about what a Tele should sound like have most likely prejudiced me.
Sound and tone preference depends a lot on kind/style of music you like and or play. There are several variables to this and choices and setup create so many differences to sound/tone. Every pickup is different from all others. Even same part models have subtle differences. Then string gauges, pickup hight setup, guitar wiring/electrics, ect... then Amps and pedals are another infinite set of sound/tone variables. Nice demo of these two tele's.
I love Teles… pretty much all of them! So much so that I put a blender pot on my hss strat to get a Tele tone out of it! 😃 Teles are easy to play, very utilitarian and just sound awesome! And… in my opinion, there’s not a tone better than a cranked amp, a Tele on the bridge and a tube screamer type pedal in front… it’s an eargasm!!!! ❤️❤️❤️ I’m not as much a fan of the deluxe only because of the two volume controls… just that much more I have to deal with when gigging. But I do love the 72 thinline with double humbuggies with single volume and tone! Great video… as always!!!!!!
I wanted to like the Deluxe but those pickups sounds muffled, like a wet blanket was thrown over the amp. The neck & middle position of the tele is just amazing!
With the utmost respect to Darrell ... check out some of the RUclips demos on the newer Vintera Tele Deluxes. Make sure you check out the 70s Deluxe with 2 humbuckers. Amazing range of tones! Yes ... it might be a bit Les Paul leaning in sound ... but the tones are awesome! I love this line of guitars. Just about to pull the trigger on one.
@@stephenlennartz3466 I happen to have one myself, a 70s tele Deluxe reissue. I can attest, those humbucking pickups very sweet clean or distorted. What I like best about them is if you attack the strings there's a lot of dynamic range that comes out of them, and when you want to pull back in the background easing up on the attack gives you a very soft sweet sound. When you put the overdrive on, and push the strings hard, you get a beautiful harmonic sound, it sings🎶
To me it sounds like the standard single coils are more rough, piercing and in your face while the humbuckers are more muffled, rounded off and mellow sounding. I would own both for different purposes.
The Tele Standard sounds like a Telecaster but the Deluxe enters in a new dimension, tempted by the dark side but with a lot of redemption as it is true to its identity. Great comparison and video Darrell, now you put me in a difficult place especially when my favourite shop has a Tele with soapbars P90s
Mine has a f hole... 😏😏😏😏😏 ...That sounds dirty in light of your comparison at the beginning. But it really does, I have the 60th Anniversary “telebration” modern thinline.
What I have learned from this is, even though I love the look of a classic tele, the humbucker in the neck and the single coil in the bridge gives the sound that is my favorite. That is what I have in my Peavey EXP and it is a phenomenal sounding guitar. The look of the double single coil is still my favorite look though.
I definitely appreciate all you do But you really should just play some clean stuff even if it’s some cow boy chords More and more guitar players are enjoying clean tones whether it’s funk or Neo soul R&B and certain pop Not to mention jazz and song writers And old school Country, gospel , and those who play finger style and police style stuff Sheesh you are leaving a lot of people out So let’s hear more cleans in your videos I guarantee your subscribers will increase
Out of all the guitars I've owned my old Tele would have to be my favorite. I regret getting rid of it because I loved it and another one just can't replace it. I had single coils which sounded great. It had a nice blues tone to it but could play so much more. I have played the deluxe plenty of times and I think for more hard rock playing the dual humbuckers are the way to go. If you want a nice classic tone go with the single coils. I do have to say the telecaster has to be the most versitile guitar around.
I got a Squire Tele custom, black. Bought used, looked new. Couldn't pass it up at GC for 250$. Replaced saddles with brass and am using flat wound 11's. Play gospel songs with a bluesy rockabilly tone. The neck is very nice. Passed up a Classic vibe that was nice but not as nice or as versatile as the Tele custom. Amen!!!
Hi Darrell, I have the California Fat in sunburst. My wife bought for me i think in 97. Great guitar with humbucker neck and single coil bridge. I think they were only in production for one year
Of your two samples == humbuck. Mine == '61, inherited from my Granpa in 1965. Maple neck as chunky as a baseball bat, sustain for miles. I finger-picked jazz for a half-century; I don't recall the last time I used the bridge pickup. True fact. If you play it, you instantly ask "Is this for sale?" My answer? "Maybe. Get back to me in a year or two..." Of course, as you might suspect, I said that same answer for several decades.
I really like this video. With the commercially licensed music that I write and record, I just bought a Telecaster again. Single coil pickups I like the best, because of the genres I write and record in. But, in regards to playing distortion and getting more sustain from a humbucker I may buy one of those no-name telecaster copies and install a dual rail humbucker in the bridge... just to have that option.
james moscoso squire is pretty amazing! I own a 2001 squire standard telecaster that had a horrible beer brand logo on the top but I sanded it down and varnished it. Bought it in high school from a friend after I witnessed him throwing it down a flight of stairs and when I picked it up it was still in tune! Got it for $40, sold it twice but had to buy it back so I paid roughly like $120. It's never leaving my side again! It's my number 2 and my number 1 is a Gibson Les Paul studio Sweetwater usa exclusive, it's perfect!!! A work of art! The squire telecaster is a literal work horse! It can take a beating but it gets the job done!
+Jayden Valentine Hi! If I use other people's riffs or backing tracks I list them in the video description ☺ On a lot of my videos I will use my own riffs as well. All the soloing is just me jamming.
mcleroy1967 ... picking up a used one next week - black on black. Maybe if you wanted a Deluxe, that would be a good compromise. I find the black one looks the best since the pick guard doesn’t stand out as much.
Your playing just rocks Darryl. I would compare the Tele more to a 1975 International pickup. Plain and rather homely, but very solid. 30-30 is beautiful. Can't argue with it's value though, by how many records it's been used on. After hearing you play both, there's no question. Standard Telecaster. If I want that thicker sound I'll pick up my LP copy. Thanks for answering a curiosity!
I like to clean sound of the Y2T especially on the high the notes were very clean and smooth, pleasant to the ear. I have a Squier Tele classic vibe that I bought about two years ago. It's a semi hollow-body. Interestingly enough I'm getting ready to put a hot rails humbucker on the bridge pickup. I have already replaced the neck pickup with a much better one but I can't remember the name of it but it's gold plated just looks good with that body. Anyway we'll see what the hot rails do for it, if it doesn't please me I'll just switch back. Thank you so much Daryl for all your lessons. I've watched so many of them I can't even count. Keep up the good work brother. much love from a Virginia.
Love your channel! Really well done and informative. Great to see a fellow Canadian knocking it out of the park. I always found the '72 Tele Deluxe fascinating. Ordered one from my friends at Long and McQuade and I got a lovely sunburst with the big headstock. Now, this was a Mexican version and the pickups were just horrible. I loved the feel, like the thing was made for me. But the sound! AWFUL! Muddy and crappy at the same time. (Which was mud, and which was crap? Who can know!) Found "The Creamery" a small boutique pickup maker in the UK. Talked with "Jamie" the owner/proprietor and he was great. It was not cheap, but I got two modern versions of the Wide-Range. WOW!!!! JUST WOW!!! WHAT a difference! Be a great show to get hold of a MIM Telecaster deluxe. You will not believe the garbage under the pickup cover. (Spoiler alert: regular sized pickups wrapped in cotton to fit?) Shovel in a few of the aftermarket options. Lollar, The Creamery, and anyone else who makes the odd-sized pickups.
I love my single coil Tele. I thought one with humbuckers would be the perfect marriage between a Tele and a Gibson SG but I'm not that impressed with the Tele hum bucker sound. Thanks for the video!
Hi Darrell, Been watching a few of your broadcasts, highly intelligent, reasoned analysis as always, refreshingly devoid of hyperbole. I am a Telecaster freak and favour single coil pickups. I did own a Tele Deluxe for a while, but found it to be characterless. I have just bought a Tokai Breezysound Tele thinline in turquoise, changed bridge saddles to Gotoh InTune brass compensated - it's absolutely amazing for such a low price. Built in China but with Korean pickups which are very good. The quality is truly impressive - every bit as good as, if not better than a Squier for twice the price. I have a Squier at the moment on loan and the Tokai is markedly better - thicker frets, better pickups, sounds more like a Tele ... The Telecaster Deluxe still sounds characterless to me - it's a halfway house trying to achieve some Humbucker crunch, but single coils are cleaner, more distinct, have that 'ping' that is so typical of a Tele .. am not a fan of Humbuckers.
both sound awesome, beautiful but very different...and they would sound fantastic together, compliment each other well. i have a fake, $100 modern player copy, f-hole, maple tone block, p-90's, tobacco sunburst polyester finish...an binding on the top, crazy!
Just purchased a T style guitar for my daughter. It had a Seymour Duncan humbucker bridge pick-up, but I asked the seller to replace with the original single coil for that more classic Tele sound. Neck pick-up is a Porter Tron, so that will give it a unique sound, but Teles have to have that single coil!

The simplicity of the design is what makes it so bloody sexy in many’s eyes. Mine included.
I like the single coils. I’m getting a Squire bullet tele tomorrow can hardly wait . The surf green .
I have one incredible @@@@@@!!!!!!!
great colour choice!
Squire?
When it comes to clean and slightly dirty tones, nothing ever beats a Fender single coil. So much texture and clarity at the top end.
For clean tones I would definitely say yes the Tele with single coils. For crunch I would say a Strat with single coils.
@@fredriksvard2603 or P90
@@fredriksvard2603 I don't know about that. I think a good Tele single coil bridge pup kicks out high gain better than most humbuckers.
It also has more of a twang sound.
For sure! Single coils are so expressive! The tone😋
Honestly i don’t really seem to ever like a humbucker in the neck position. I’m more of a single coil guy through and through but i can really get into a humbucker in the bridge and single in neck. I think that is the best combo of both worlds.
Great vid i always enjoy your thorough demos!
Yeah they get so muddy
How can you not like them both. They both have their place. Love it!
And I subbed
As a Les Paul guy who wants a fender, the deluxe is perfection for me..
Evan Iqbal that makes sense, you get the humbuckers you’re used to and you get that single cutaway. But you get the fender feel.
I love the gibson tone and the fender feel, so perfect for me too
I agree, and I’m right there with you. Also with a bad back from my military days, I’m grateful that my tele deluxe is a lot lighter.
If you can get over all that pick guard.
Guitar with single colils sounds better, but for unknown reason I want Delux
If I’m only buying one then the standard would be it, but which guitar player only have one guitar.
The broke one...
Mike Anderson Like Jimi Hendrix, Slash, Ritchie Blackmore, Albert King, YJM, Brian May, John 5, Chuck Berry, and Brian Setzer?
They basically play(ed) and were devoted to one model of guitar.
@@nkmcfrln Pffft. Jimi Hendrix did not. He used Flying Vs, SGs, and multiple Strats.
Much like bikes and watches (also cars if you have the money), the correct number of guitars is N+1 (N=number of guitars currently owned).
Initially the deluxe had me....but there is something profoundly resonating about the sound of those single coils that haunts me even afterwards. Just WOW. Fantastic video
I agree about the single coils. Very much so. I actually have a Deluxe with Shawbuckers. I like it a lot, it sounds great...but it's not that Tele sound that haunts us
I enjoyed the tone of the Deluxe but, that’s not a real Tele.
"only afford one" hahahah check back with me in ten yrs....you will probably have 5 or 10. It's a disease. Good luck!
Congrats
The Tele is all about the rear single coil. Adding a rear humbucker just isn’t the same.
Don't forget the middle position. This is an important sound of the tele too
The answer is a Tele Custom!
They both sound so sweet on those tunes you choose.
What about the 70s Tele Custom with humbucker neck and standard tele single coil bridge? That seems to be the best of both worlds
to me it's the opposite of the best of both worlds.
Ok . So I started to watch this then ended up closing my eyes . You brought out the beauty of both Teles 🤘, need to view this again 👍
A telecaster ain't a telecaster without the metal plate bridge that gives the distinctive tele sound. This Deluxe just can't twang.
Ivy Symphony
I think the ashtray bridge design is ugly. Looks unfinished.
F that.
@@TheDmonet I couldn't have said it any better. I love a hss & hh strat such more than a sss. I hate a single coil bridge...too trebly to me
@@TheDmonet I mostly agree but then, what's the point in buying a tele with hh if its purpose is just to replicate a gibson.
You're a boss for making these videos man
that single coil tele sound grabs me every time
Your videos have the highest production values , well done
+Dhiraj Shetty Thanks man! I appreciate it ☺
YES! I remember asking for this, also I mainly play three tele deluxes so I obviously would pick the deluxe but that regular is just fine! As long as it's a tele, it's good
+MrDirtBaggins 3 Tele Deluxes? That's hardcore! 😀
Darrell Braun Guitar
Of course, after all they are the best model of guitar in the world. In fact three simply is not enough, in thinking about getting another one
Thank you Darrell for this nice overview and comparison of the 2 Telecaster models! FR
The Strat is the AK-47 of electric guitar
The Tele is the Mosin Nagant of electric guitar
Reliable, amazing, and extremely awesome!
AK47: the gun is reliable but kicks like a mule
Strat: the guitar is reliable but the whammy bar whacks it out of tune haha
I think strat is more an m16 and tele is ak 47.
@@joshualessore7652 If you play a Chinese Squier Stratocaster, then of course the whammy bar will detune it.
Great video man! This is my favorite guitar and it was magical listening to you play!
I've never heard someone make a guitar sound so seductive
Darrell your critique of the Deluxe points to the 70s Custom, with its sweet Humbucker on the neck and the traditional single coil on the bridge.
My first electric was a Tele copy circa 1973. Now I have a G&L ASAT made in Japan in 2000. I do love the single coil.
+William Hawkins Nice!
Since you mentioned grandpa's old lever action 30-30...I'm now subscribed.
The analogy you gave here was top notch !!! Bravo DB
I've Fallen in Love with the one that has Rosewood fretboard...She's all I need+want!
+M3RRIH3W13 Thanks!
It's definitely on my list! Unfortunately, my list of videos to do is quite long at the moment lol!
Yes, the Standard gives the classic Tele tone, but I gotta say I like the "balanced" response of the Deluxe - it sounds more dense and complex in the low end. But I would be more than happy to own either one.
Hi Darrel, i'm Richard from Holland, i bought a Tele deluxe shawbuckers a few weeks ago, and it sounds sooooo smooth thanks for all your reviews
In my opinjon.
Tele is tele.
Or you have a tele or a Gibson.
The Deluxe is a wonderful guitar.
But the sound of tele is the american standard.
Regards
Bridge position is where I live for the most part because I play a lot of rock and punk, the humbuckers growl, the single coils bark. The tele was perfect from the get go, single coils and all
The neck Pickup on that deluxe is outstanding.....the tones you got out of that position were incredible
You are a Great Player...Enjoyed Listening to You Play as well as the Comparison. Thank You.
Leo Fender had nothing to due with the Deluxe. It came out in 72 a good while after Leo sold the company. It's pure CBS. It's one of the saving graces of CBS
Wasn't it inspired by Keith Richards needs?
Neil Aspinall the Telecaster Custom has the humbucker in the neck. It also was released in 72. Kieth installed a PAF in his 52 in 72. The question which was done first? Did Fender release that guitar and was Kieth inspired, or was Fender inspired by Kieth?
@@Neil-Aspinall it has storage space for his drugs?
I have a -74 Deluxe with original Seth Lover WRHBs and it suits me perfect as my main rythm guitar. Had it since 1984. The sound is great, deep tone with a lot of versatility.
+Henrik Nordberg That's sweet! 🎸😍
Man, something about your videos really encourage me to play the guitar again. It's really been years but I think I'm ready for a new guitar in my life. Probably gonna get this standard American Telecaster! Thanks for the encouragement!
+Frank Alvarado Man, that is great to hear!
You should definitely start playing again ☺
My first electric was a Tele copy circa 1973. Now I have a G&L ASAT made in Japan in 2000. I do love the single coil.
Dammit Darrell, I like both of them... I see a visit to the bank coming up :-)
I love Teles… pretty much all of them!
Without a doubt the nicest guitarist on RUclips
To me it sounds like the standard single coils are more rough, piercing and in your face while the humbuckers are more muffled, rounded off and mellow sounding. I would own both for different purposes.
Proud owner of an American Vintage 50s which instantly became my main guitar, after I bought it
The Tele Standard sounds like a Telecaster but the Deluxe enters in a new dimension, tempted by the dark side but with a lot of redemption as it is true to its identity. Great comparison and video Darrell, now you put me in a difficult place especially when my favourite shop has a Tele with soapbars P90s
Love your playing Darrell
Mine has a f hole... 😏😏😏😏😏
...That sounds dirty in light of your comparison at the beginning.
I definitely appreciate all you do
But you really should just play some clean stuff even if it’s some cow boy chords
More and more guitar players are enjoying clean tones whether it’s funk or Neo soul R&B and certain pop
Not to mention jazz and song writers
And old school
Country, gospel , and those who play finger style and police style stuff
Sheesh you are leaving a lot of people out
So let’s hear more cleans in your videos
I guarantee your subscribers will increase
Great video, thanks! I've always been a single (coil) guy and here I also much prefered the singles.
I say every guitarist needs to have one of each.Great playing as always Darrell.
Thanks Joe!
True fact.
If you play it, you instantly ask "Is this for sale?"
My answer?
Try the squire classic vibe its amazing for a squire I liked the standard best
+james moscoso Agreed! It is very good.
james moscoso squire is pretty amazing!
Enjoyed this demo, I think I’m sold on the delux. 😎
Hey Darell do you make up these songs by yourself on the spot?
+Jayden Valentine Hi!
If I use other people's riffs or backing tracks I list them in the video description ☺
On a lot of my videos I will use my own riffs as well.
All the soloing is just me jamming.
Darrell Braun Guitar you're a genius man!
Didn’t hear any rhythm playing, it was all lead work. I’d love to hear a few chord progressions side by side.
I really like the way the deluxe sounds, especially in the mix. I just can't get over all the plastic on the front. Too much pick guard.
I have to agree, but to me it sounds like a warmer tele which is perfect in my book... I had to pick one up.
mcleroy1967 ... picking up a used one next week - black on black.
Another great video! Single coil is my preference. Thanks for sharing :)
+David Martin ☺👍
best part of this vid were the note choices on that solo, lovely playing dude
+darkestfugue Thanks man!
Get both problem solved. If you say you can’t afford it you are not trying hard enough.
Both sound awesome and that's exactly why you should never have to choose. Get both!
Hi Darrell,
Been watching a few of your broadcasts, highly intelligent, reasoned analysis as always, refreshingly devoid of hyperbole.
Man I love the look of the deluxe but the sound of the single coil......aw man.
Get a telecaster custom! Single coil bridge with that deluxe loooook!
both sound awesome, beautiful but very different...and they would sound fantastic together, compliment each other well. i have a fake, $100 modern player copy, f-hole, maple tone block, p-90's, tobacco sunburst polyester finish...an binding on the top, crazy!
It's the regular single coil Tele for me.. that's it that's all I need.. you could never go wrong with a classic tele .
