The Lincoln is a great throwback. Ford was never known for reliable transmissions. Thankfully they are cheap to rebuild and make more reliable.

I’m gonna put this in a quote that Jermey Clarkson said. “This is brilliant! But I like this. Let me put it in this way Hammond. Maybe 80's Mercedes were more reliable than April's Lincoln, but in the last 20 years, Mercedes and BMW have been crap in terms of reliability and cost of maintenance. The transmission should be cheap to replace or rebuild. You built Hoovie's Garage upon this fact.
Well considering the Lincoln is a Ford underneath even replacing a transmission would be half the cost of a Mercedes. I'm guessing the Lincoln is basically a crown Vic underneath which have been proven to be very reliable. Even if the Mercedes had fewer problems the cost of repairs would outweigh the difference in owning one.
Because both Mercedes and BMW stop the engineers from building cars and allowed the accountant's to do that instead and to this day both companies are paying for it 🤦♂️

My grandmother had a white on white 90's Town Car. I remember it had a car phone and the mic was in the visor. At a stop light she'd be talking to her visor and people thought she was crazy. A time way before cell phones were common. She loved that car. Whoever got it after she passed got a car with maybe 30,000 miles and driven by a 70 + year old lady in tip top condition.
Also my brother and thought the auto closing trunk was very cool.😄

W126 Mercedes Benz platform was and I think still the best of the best in automotive engineering, I have my 1986 420 SEL with only 48k original miles and the car is incredible reliable, comfortable and incredible beautiful.

@@Vaino_Hotti The production run isn't the important part, but when the last car was introduced. The Roadmaster was markedly more "modern" than the old Panther platform. I've owned both and the Buick was simply a better car with better interior and features as well.. Ford, unfortunately barely made any changes to the entire line for the 20 year run as there was heavy pressure from livery and police, over 95% of their customers, to keep things the same.
It effectively was the best tech in 1992 but by the early 2000s, it was... dated. Without a doubt the best overall, though, if we add in European cars, was the Mercedes S class. (late 90s). Big, built like a tank, and smooth as glass. The double-pane windows and extra insulation made it nearly silent inside. Driving one instantly feels superior in almost every way. The U.S. stuff of the 90s/early 2000s simply did not compete.

The Benz seats are hard as a rock, the leather will burn your skin, it rides like a buckboard, and the steering wheel is the size of a manhole cover because the "power steering" is tuned for the autobahn.
Lincolns and Cadillacs from that era are in demand because they have the best balance of technology and comfort
Indeed, my aunt had one she bought it New, I don't recall the year maybe an 81, it was a diesel and had that huge steering wheel, a strong car it's true but as far as comfortable forget about it.

I drove Lincoln Town cars (and other marques) for a living beginning in the 90s. Cadillacs may have had more seating position adjustments but were painful, almost crippling, after just a few hours. Town Cars were infinitely more comfortable for 12-15 hours days behind the wheel. Surely the better luxury ride and seating are a couple reasons for Town Cars becoming synonymous with black car service. Admittedly 2000 era S-Class MB and Cadillac Escalade seats with massagers, heat, and internal A/C ventilation are better. But Town Cars were NOT uncomfortable like everything GM of the era

It is possible to love both the Town Car and the Mercedes, especially since you can get each of these at very reasonable prices now. I’ve grown to love the old American land yachts. I once had a 1996 Olds Ninety-Eight and when it was right it was beautiful; I had to junk it when the Midwestern salt finally rusted through the brake lines and it just was no longer financially sensible to repair. As far as April’s town car, it is beautiful and in amazing condition, and you do still see them all over the Midwest. Yes, it was the official staff car of AARP, but it was also THE limo of the 1990s, the livery service special taking celebs & powerbrokers to and from the airport. And since it’s basically 80% a Crown Vic it’s tough as nails, you can rack up the miles by the hundreds of thousands, and many of the parts are still very cheap and easy to find.
On the other hand the 500SEL was the official executive car of celebs and stock brokers in the 1980s. If you drove that you were somebody and didn’t mind the world knowing. It is so classy that you could roll up to any country club in America and still look like a Baller to this day.
So, was Hoovie trying to talk her OUT of the Town Car…or himself INTO another Merc W126?

A million years ago I bought a 1991 Lincoln town car. One owner black paint. It was absolutely beautiful. My uncle used to laugh and said people kept stopping me asking were the funeral was. 😂. I'd love to have another one but the problem is when I see one they are worn out and trashed. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing one of these 1990,s era Lincoln town cars we'll kept going down the road but there's nothing uglier than seeing a trashy one going down the road
I had a 1994 Lincoln town car signature series. Absolutely loved it. I don’t care that it was an old man’s car it was so comfortable. I just enjoyed being in it. It was so reliable and not even that bad on gas. It’s probably one of the last quality vehicles Ford made

My dad had that same Lincoln Town car. The seats are so plush and with the full front plush velvet couch, many of life's pleasures were made there.

A common failure with the AOD was the plastic grommet that attached the cable to the throttle. I upgraded mine to a brass grommet from a later year (I think it was from an Explorer).
My guess is this part was the failure point. So easy to replace before it breaks and smokes the transmission. Should have been a recall.
I also prefer the Lincoln.
I drove a 94 Lincoln Town Car when I was in my early 20's and it was amazing. It had leather, auto climate and many other features I cannot remember. Oh it was white and had a beige cloth top over the top rear part of the car. The air suspension was key and the v8 had decent power. Got her over 100 many times. With fat white wall tires the car really was a beautiful classic the road so smooth and was so big I could drive all my friends around in. Great times, great car.
I love those old Mercedes. But nothing can take your Captian feeling in an Lincoln or Cadillac landyacht. You win April!

I'm with April. My dad always had Mercs, the last one was a '91 420 SE and every time it was serviced it was thousands worth of fixing this and that. Meanwhile I drove a '66 Cadillac, and wouldn't even consider swapping it for a Merc. Granted, by the 80s-90's the American stuff was of lower quality, but still cheaper to buy and maintain and if you like the comfort and "numbness" as I do, well it's not such a clear cut choice.
Some of my all time favorite cars are the 95-97 town cars. Logically yes the Mercedes is probably a better car in every way, but I'm totally with April that the Town Car is the one I want haha
I've always loved this particular Mercedes and many run forever. The venerable Crown Victoria is also a mileage champion when given the chance.
It seems what we have here is a deep pocketed Hovvie who appreciates the Mercedes bloodline and can pay for the upkeep. Brake job maintenance is $3000 ish ? while the bread and butter Vic is what more like $1,000 ? If you challenge these numbers fine but document your objections to the principle - Mercedes cost buckets to maintain compared to the Vic.

I’m a huge fan of Hoovie and April, but after seeing how much April likes the Grand National and now town car, I’m hooked. Since I was a kid I loved those 90’s Lincoln’s; and it’s nice to see someone my age who appreciates them as well. And don’t worry about the transmission - just replace it and keep going: I have a 2003 Marauder with 320k miles on an original transmission and 2010 Town Car with 210k miles…. These things are workhorses that are built to last and easy and cheap to fix when something does go wrong. Btw: you two make the best content on YT : please keep it coming!

I think April might enjoy exploring some of the late 60’s/early 70’s Thunderbirds, Mercury & perhaps the Lincoln Mark 3 of that era. The Ford quality was at its peak at that point 😊

My father was an engineer for Sheller-Globe way back when and he designed the weatherstrip for that Town Car platform. That project was his baby for a while till the new Explorers came along. RIP Old Man

I remember the first time i closed the door of a friends diesel Mercedes sedan. When it closed i was amazed at the sound of those doors. I also remember that Mercedes headrests could get you killed because the adjustability of them for your neck made so comfortable you could easily fall asleep at the wheel.

My dad had a Lincoln Town car for a while in Scotland, was an absolutely cracking big car, so comfortable and smooth and just a little buzz when moving, it was so quiet! Unfortunately idiots in the street wouldn't leave it alone, so he had to get rid of it.
As a kid,I grew up with town cars, sedan devilles,and new yorkers.
My mother's last town car was a 93,and my dad's last caddy was an 01.
They were decent cars for the time,but I have an R129 sl600 and an sl500. The feel of those old Benz cars is something you need to experience, is it the best at everything? No,but they are so good,I have never driven anything like the sl600,and I have driven and owned almost as much as Tyler!
I worked in Beverly Hills in the 80s and these were everywhere. Even saw one that was a cab. Beautiful cars.
My closest friend had a 300 SEL and I absolutely loved that car. He was kind enough and lent it to me, or we swapped cars when he needed my strong 4x4 to do something, and I got to cruise the merc. Feeling like a king on the road in that quite luxury car, but even the 300 had enough power to give that train feeling when you floored it. A strong smooth feeling of movement in a car that felt really heavy. Swalloving imperfections in the road and just floated along, it was a dream to drive long distances. Had to fuel it up a few times, and it was hungry, but who cares with that dream of a car. I absolutely love those large SEL's.
Nicest Mercedes car designed and executed... The ugly US market lights that Mercedes had to put were horrendous. The Car was designed to cruise at 220+ KPH all day with the euro headlights and bumpers.... Lets see the Lincoln come close to being stable at 120 KPH.....
@@charlestimmis273 We live in Norway and got the original version, without the ugly American modifications. Was that for safety reasons, and what was supposedly wrong with the original headlights? I had a Nissan Patrol 4x4 and the rules in Europe at that time, was that the rear lights was mounted too high, so the European version had to get some rear lights inside the bumper, to be up to standard. Totall bullshit if you ask me.
One thing that goes undiscussed in these videos is that the Benz has an independent rear suspension, which makes for a better ride.
@@gudfarfar A long, long time ago -- before WWII -- American automakers were required by regulation to use sealed beams. This was, in its time, a step forward for safety, , because of reliability. By the 80's the European non-sealed lights were safe, reliable, and better, and we were still stuck with the ancient rule mandating seal beam units only.
By the mid 80's, the rule was finally dropped. Now the big difference is aiming pattern.
Lincolns are tried and true from panther body. Beautiful history too. Mercedes are unstoppable if cared for. She has style
I owned a rein to that car in 1985. Loved it, but those springy seat drove me crazy, and they were real thigh killers on long trips. The preceding 450SEL seats were way more comfy.
I am with April. I had a 1996 Lincoln Town Car for 5 years. I loved it. I love Mercedes as well, but repairs are twice as expensive as they are on the Lincoln.
The AOD trans works fine. If the throttle shift cable fails, from the plastic clip, or is misadjusted, you will cause damage. My 1988 Ford van, with 220K miles, and a never serviced AOD, works great. Also my 172K mile AOD equipped Thunderbird SC, shifts fine. How about Chrysler, and GM transmission failures?
SC 🤔... I have 3 of them a 91 is an ATX. I have pulled the TV cable through or to tighten it up just a little bit too cause the shift points to raise up in the RPM a little without issue. Whereabouts are you? Those SC are hard to find and rare to see on the road.

That Lincoln was used by limo companies everywhere. All car ride services to the airports in the NYC area loved them. They kept the Lincolns until they had over 200,000 on those Town Cars and the transmissions started going - then they sold them. Many bought Lincoln MKZ or MKXs to keep them 200,000 miles. Few bought German cars. Why? The electrical problems they had killed them before 150,000 miles - usually around 100,000 miles. So for services like this the Lincoln Town Car dominated the scene from the 1990s to the early 2000s in the NY area.
My favourite European car is the Citroen CX. It’s extremely comfortable and comes with the amazing powered hydraulic suspension, steering and brakes. Sadly, they did rust but so did everything back then.
Bought a 1997 Town Car new. 380k miles later I still loved it. Yeah, I put trans in it. So what. Also owned a 1978 Mercedes 230. Nice drive but WAY more expensive to maintain than the Town Car. Always on the lookout for a low mileage primo 1995/1997 Town Car. SHE'S HOT!!!

Entertaining video - thanks! And all points are true. But digging down, is it a fair comparison? $20k price difference in ‘86 is the same as a $57k difference today. It’s like comparing today a $40k new car against a $100k car. Also, as you noted, repair and maintenance cost are at a different level on the German cars. Having stated that, The German cars of 70’s and 80’s were wonderful. Refined well built tanks! Not true anymore; that 40-year old Lincoln is more solid and reliable than most 7+ year-old German cars these days. Disclosure: My car’s German.

I had a 93 TC from 2004-2011, purchased with 104k after sitting for a year when previous owner died. Trans went out within 2 months, later was told by a former Lincoln tech that prior to 95 the trans cooler was under powered and usually burned them up by 80k. As far as the window motors, usually it's just the nylons bushings that go bad inside the moto gear. Personally with the overall condition of that TC I would drop $3k on a new trans in a heartbeat.
That Lincoln absolutely will get up and go.
The windows are a very easy fix. I bet the motors are fine. It’s most likely the - I want to say ‘gear’ but it’s not the gear it’s 3 plastic bushings ...
I had to replace those on my 1991 Crown Victoria. Cheap and easy fix!
I'm not a transmission guy but I've taken apart several AOD's that were common in my area (Aerostars). What I found was a metal "star", about 3/16" thick that connected two sections of the internal drivetrain. The star had it's ears rounded off. It appeared to me that thrust washers at both ends of said drivetrain would wear out, allowing the two gearsets to walk apart. Once the endplay reached about half the thickness of the star, the star would strip out of the companion slot. We'd keep the shifter out of AOD and drove around in 3rd gear until it got fixed.
That Lincoln is pretty neat for being one of the earliest Ford "modular" V8s ever produced. The predecessor to the Coyote everyone loves today, really.
In some ways, not all that different from the '80s to early '90s W126 V8s. Chan driven SOHC, but the Ford has a more modern fuel injection system. Where the Mercedes is using a mechanical Bosch K-Jetronic, the Lincoln is using EFI port injection like a real modern car.
Should make more power than the old Benz too, but I suspect the Lincoln weighs more than the old S class.
BUT, I do agree that the Mercedes has a very different feel to it. There is a sense of great attention to detail in the engineering and assembly of those old Benzes. Hard to describe. It's not like modern luxury that's got insane electrical features out the wazoo, it's just a car that felt much higher quality than the vast majority of other cars on the road during its day. Sure, it had some more sophisticated features than many cars of its time as well, but nothing really crazy compared to what's out there now.
The later years of that W126, with a 5.5 liter engine and better compression ratio, were a lot of fun. While the Ford 4.6L 2v V-8's are nice and smooth, I don't think they'd have the same grunt.

Years ago, my grandparents early 90's Town Car was passed down to me. I got it to 200K miles, and it was a great comfy car. As for the original transmission, it went out in the 90's when the family was travelling on summer vacation, and my grandparents got it replaced, so it does seem like transmissions were an issue with these models.
_As much as we love American land yachts, I'm with Hoovie on this one. (My bff still has his 1996 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL AMG, and loves that car). Plus he owns a few Beemers from the brand-new Z4 to a mid-teens 750Li M Sport. At the end of the day, German cars are always better!_

Ironically the german Mercedes Benz trash box, has the american Style Sealed beam and the Lincoln has the Euro composite headlamp. But id still take the older Lincoln.

I'll take the Lincoln any day! There is a reason why the Ford's Panther line vehicles were used as taxis, limos, and police cars. Many of them are running well as daily drivers in excess of 300K miles. Like most domestic vehicles, I'm sure the Lincoln varies by generation.
