  • Here is a look at how the left hand works for this etude. I hope it clarifies a few things visually. Thanks to all of you for starting the discussion on violinist.com!

      I'm afraid you and the violinists who follow the procedures suggested here are wrong. I don't want to force anything on you, but read, listen and try this: ruclips.net/video/lQmduC9IkvU/видео.html&ab_channel=alterbridelius

    My last teacher (himself a student of Carl Flesch) boasted that he taught an adult beginner student how to play the violin using only this etude. My hand aches just watching this remembering the hours I spent on it. Another helpful video. Thanks!

    How to let the left hand fingers relax throughout the whole piece?

    • @natesviolin
      @natesviolin  9 лет назад +2

      Christie Wan There are many reasons why the left hand can get tired or tense in such a busy etude as this one! It often starts with tension between the thumb and first finger. It can also be too much finger pressure on the strings. Would you like to work on this with me? You can visit nathancoleviolin.com to see how.

    Amazing as ever! Just a curiosity: how much speed of the bow can "helps" or in some way is involved in this process that it seems only left hand work?

    • @natesviolin
      @natesviolin  7 лет назад +4

      I hope I understand your question... most people I find play this etude (and many etudes) with a weak sound. It's important to play with a full sound so that you get practice stopping the strings when they are really vibrating! Therefore, I like to use plenty of bow for this. I advise you to change the bow as often as you need, according to the tempo. So when you are practicing it slowly, you may want to change every 8 notes or so.

    Quick question: It looks like you are holding down a b flat (on the A string) or f natural (on the E string). Are you? I’ve not seen Kreutzer 9 written that way, but I can see great benefit to doing that. Could you perhaps comment on what you are doing in terms of holding down your first finger and why? Great videos, by the way!

    • @diegeigergarnele7975

      I know it's an old video but he said in another video that he thinks holding down the first fingers helps closing the string and helps 4th finger articulation

    I think I have different fingeringa in my book, I guess you put down 2 as the first finger, in my edition it's always the 1.

    • @natesviolin
      @natesviolin  7 лет назад +3

      Yes, you can use whatever fingerings you want for this. It's a very versatile etude! For my own work, I favor using lots of 4th finger so that I can strengthen it.

    Hi Nathan Cole can you make a video on how to improve sightreading Please I would thank you a lot!!

    • @diegeigergarnele7975
      @diegeigergarnele7975 6 лет назад

      Just practice scales and arpeggios, every mode and kind, sightreading is much easier when you already know which fingering you'll need.

    have a question.
    in 36th measure
    3rd, 16th note f g d(third position) f.
    how can I connect smoothly even though they include shifting like this in fast tempo.

    • @alterbridelius
      @alterbridelius 4 года назад

      Read, listen and try this: ruclips.net/video/lQmduC9IkvU/видео.html
      Your first finger will not lie on the string, it will be relaxed and movable. Then the first finger can begin to slide into the third position still during playing the last g in the first position.

    Hi I'm thinking of learning this on electric guitar,I take it,that it's a slur study,I.e you only bow the 'f' and the left hand fingers hammer on and off for the rest of the phrase Till the low Bb and start of next phrase?

    • @natesviolin
      @natesviolin  7 лет назад

      Great! I'm curious to know how it works out for you on guitar.

    • @natesviolin
      @natesviolin  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Ross, I don't love "tricks" either, and I certainly don't like relying on them. So this is really for those extreme moments when, for whatever reason, things just want to get shaky. If you're shaking or unstable on a regular basis, at regular dynamics, then yes, something is off. But think of this as something to get you out of a jam when you have to play extremely quietly and you've had an extra cup of coffee!
      I'm known for having a steady hand, and sometimes when people ask me how I do it, I let them know that in fact there are many times when things want to start jumping... but then this gets me out of it and back on track!
      Suffice it to say that every player shakes once in a while. I sit three feet away from the best, and I've seen it all!

    • @natesviolin
      @natesviolin  7 лет назад

      That's a subject I don't know much about! I would certainly start by listening to as much of the kind of music as you want to play, and simply to start going for those sounds. If you can find a teacher where you are, that's even better.
