    Solid-state batteries are the inevitable future of EV batteries for the simple fact that the co-inventor of the lithium-ion battery, John Goodenough, said they were for their extremely rapid charge time, higher capacity, virtually no capacity lost to extremely cold, or hot temps, and minimal BMS. The only hurdles are: cycle life and costs, which are both rapidly improving, but either way, they are the future for the reasons li-on battery inventors said. Great news in the this vid!

    • @vandamonium1731
      @vandamonium1731 Месяц назад

      'virtually no capacity lost to extremely cold' i suggest you revisit that research again
      'None of these freeze or become sluggish in cold winters, meaning solid-state batteries continue to perform well in icy weather. But unfortunately this does not mean that these revolutionary batteries are completely immune from winter cold. This is because solid batteries contain more than just electrolytes.
      They also have temperature-sensitive electrodes. And moreover, their solid electrolytes become fragile, and that needs more work to resolve too.
      Chemical reactions typically slow down with a drop in temperature. Solid battery electrodes follow this pattern. Ions shuttle more slowly between them, and their level of performance suffers.
      A solid electrolyte may not freeze, but it does become more brittle as temperature falls. This can compromise the reliability of the battery, which might eventually fail. It goes almost without saying that battery makers are working hard to resolve these challenges.'

    It's kinda funny that Sam posts the same day a video with CATL claims that solid-state batteries are not safe and will not be used in EVs anytime soon and also this =] 👍
    Time will tell - cost per kWh of stored energy and total cost of ownership (number of cycles, cost of replacement) might help to select proper batteries for low cost BEV and BEV super-cars. Anyway the competition and advancements in EV batteries area are more than welcome.

    Solid state batteries for motor vehicle use have been a technology that is coming coming coming, almost here, almost here, about to arrive! However, it has so far never been released in a publicly available vehicle that can also be independently tested. No doubt there will be a Version 2.0 motor vehicle battery tech at some stage, however, many many companies have made many many promises on the impending release of solid state batteries that so far have never actually make it into a production vehicle.

    The big question around solid state batteries is: . . . . longevity. That is not answered.
    Today, the max is around 800 charging cycles, where NMC batteries already have up to 2.500 cycles and LFP batteries up to 10.000 charging cycles.
    It is not the question "would you buy SS batteries with a range of 1.000km", . . . . but will you have to buy new ones every 2 years.

    We might see these in prototypes or small volume cars, but these are aircraft batteries. Aircraft manufacturers will bid up the price on what will be a low-volume and high performance product no matter what they actually cost to make. They make electric flight possible, while only making electric cars somewhat better. Maybe in a Rimac or other small volume hypercar?

    I think most of the problems he talked about earlier are still the real issue. The vast majority of people want to buy something where the batteries last 15 years. So unless you have a design where you can swap out these batteries easily I think the average consumer will balk at the prices. The real big market for solid state will be some type of aircraft where the weight to power ratio really matters. You want your aero car to fly on the weekends as this will be where it will shines. Really experimental at this stage and dangerous for car collisions.

    This is exactly what I have been waiting for. 500 to 600 miles of range means we would only have to charge twice a month, we can reliable range in our winters and do regular long range trips without anxiety.
    Yes, I know you hard core people don't suffer from range anxiety, but the rest of us do so stuff it.

      We aren't "hard core", we're EV owers. Range anxiety pretty much disappears once you own one. Now, I'm talking about people like me who have at-home charging ports. If you don't have that and have to rely on public chargers, then you have a point right now.

      @user-uk8tl3xy9e The odds of an EV battery catching fire are so remote it's not an issue - despite what the anti-EV faction is saying, and the new LFP batteries even less so than the original lithium batteries.

      The real question is can you put your toe in the water without an absolute guarantee that your range is going to be greater than what you would do in an internal combustion vehicle. Because 600 Mi of range is impossible in an internal combustion vehicle unless you put a sail on it and push it downhill. It doesn't take some kind of hardcore survivalist attitude to make an electric vehicle work. We do just great with our modest 285 MI range on our 6 year old cars. That includes long road trips up and down the east coast and out west.

    As of 2024, automotive technology is in limbo. One foot is in the world of the ICE. The other foot is in the world of EVs. The ICE is a mature technology. The EV is nascent technology but is the shot heard around the world. EVs are the future. I wouldn't rule out advancements in the ICE, however. Necessity is the mother of invention. For too long, legacy automakers sat on their laurels, farming out parts and production to the third world while the corporate suits summered on their yachts in the Mediterranean. Legacy automakers now have a match lit under their lazy asses. Innovate or die.

    I'm not even sure what a SS battery is. I suppose no liquid electrolyte. But thats a broad definition.
    My father worked for a major electronics company. In the late sixties solid state semiconductors were marketed as ending the need for repairs. But, its mostly easier to repair the antique electronic equipment than obsolete solid state equipment. Many 1990s cars have failed micro engine controllers, but its usually simple electrolytic capacitors that go bad - the electrolyte leaks.
    I foresee SS batteries, but will they be economically recyclable?
    I'm looking for the dirt battery. A wealthy, sustainably nation has healthy soil. Life is in the soil.

    I see the benefit of high energy density batteries being smaller pack size and lighter weight, more than longer range. In the U.S. the average daily commute is under 40 miles, and most current EV owners actually use less than 12% of their battery pack capacity each day. Just like most EV owners today charge at home overnight. The added benefit is not hauling around a ton of extra weight just to have a 135-150kWh battery pack, which is rarely used.

    I worry about all this relentless focus on solid state batteries . It's part of the disinformation narrative that we have to have some fundamental breakthrough before electric vehicles will really work for everybody. That's simply not true. We have second generation 2170 cells in our now 6-year-old model 3s that are going strong and show only 8% degradation. Even with the slight range loss, they are still great road cars, and the supercharger network is fantastic. So we don't need solid state batteries to make electric vehicles work even in their less attractive use cases.

    • @chrstphrr
      @chrstphrr 2 месяца назад +1

      It's not technology, it's politics for Japan and battery tech.
      The automotive uses of it ... well, Toyota's the largest automaker, and they have parterships and partial ownership stakes in several of the other automakers there. This gives them de-facto control of the how the entire industry procedes with electricification.
      And, quite frankly, like the German automakers the past decade or two, the Japanese automakers are more interested in hammering down the nail that stands up, rather than fostering competition through innovation of any sort.
      You can't push R&D or commercial scaling of battery tech to automakers in Japan, when they're acting more like 18th century buggy whip makers deciding on which shades of leather to use to make this year's buggy whips.

There is some suggestion then this is a so called semi solid state with still has liquids just less of them.
