    Wow this was an excellent video. I always wondered if the 4.6is motor would work in an E38 and now I have my answer. GREAT STUFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Nice work Ed. Some notes from my E38 ACS.
    When I got the car some 6.5 years ago, it was smoking like a champ! I diagnosed that the black oil separator inside the timing cover was blocked, and far too expensive to replace. So, I bypassed it the following way;
    I fitted the X5 rear CCV which as you know breathes externally and doesn’t use that valve
    I had a machine shop mate me an alloy dolly to block the pipe that leaves the oil separator to the inlet manifold which seals the pipe off
    I then took off the near side rocker cover which has the external breather casting on it for the X5, on my E38 it had to be drilled out
    I then fitted an external oil catch can near the steering reservoir and bought 19mm ID silicone piping
    The camcover now breathes into the catch can, and the other end of the catch can breathes back into the X5 CCV at the rear of the inlet manifold
    Job done. It’s been over 6 years now, and it’s lovely. Only in winter with moisture do you have to empty the catch can every 3 months or so due to water vapour
    The piping I have used is all Matt black, as is the catch can so it looks almost stock
    You also have to use a dremel to cut off the corner of the M62 noise cover to allow the silicone pipes clear access as they come out
    You’ll need some jubilee clips, and potentially some 19mm barb plastic T pieces from plumbing supplies (depends how fussy you are with the piping layout)
    Hope this helps, certainly saved my car for me, and now it doesn’t run crankcase gases into combustion which is always cleaner

      Damn..so u left the old breather still inside the engine? Im guessing if it works why not 😀

    • @rezaq1
      @rezaq1 3 года назад +1

      @@The777Garage yep, still sitting there under the timing cover! I’d love to see how blocked it was, it was enough to not let the oil drain back to sump and pull the oil into the intake manifold!
      When you do my vanos units and chains, we can investigate then

    reminds me of the Duratec 3L to 2.5L SVT top end swap, this one is more involved, but much easier as there is no custom parts to be made.. still have nightmares doing that swap.

    I was gonna do that oil separator change myself on my M60B30, but now when i see it is acctualy behind the tcg and both front covers have to come off, im gonna rethink that one...

    Wanted to do a m62tub46 in my e34 touring, but ended up doing the m62tub44 instead because I couldn't find a wrecked 4.6is anywhere. This should be awesome! Looking forward to seeing it.

    5:35 Using the Milwaukee to remove the Harmonic Balancer Bolt. Just a year ago I tested the Harmonic Balancer Bolt on a Toyota 22R 1980's that I knew had never been removed. I put a 1/2" 3 foot breaker bar on it with a 4 foot pipe extension; ended up breaking the breaker bar head. I tried the big Milwaukee without any luck. So I tried 5 minutes of heat with a torch - then tried the big Milwaukee. The bolt still fought me but the Milwaukee after the heat finally removed the bolt; man oh man.., what a bear. Your fun reminded me of that 22R moment. From Texas and Enjoy your vids. Thx for taking the time to make them

    Fantastic project mate. Had a B10 4.6 a few years back, headgasket went on one bank, when I was stripped part of the cylinder wall between two of the cylinders had a chunk out of it... Scrap engine. I tried to find a alpina or x5 4.6 engine for ages (bought an alpina one but it turned out to be a single vanos version from the early e34/e36 alpina b10s, so fingers burnt yet again) and in the end scrapped the car, I read the x5 is a stronger engine as has metal headgaskets, 4.6 is a cracking engine

      In one of my videos ive meant to repair e39 v8s alpina 4.8,after ive took head of turned it was to late as for repair as it damaged the bore..im assuming 4.6 would have bigger chance of failing head gasket than 4.4 as bore is 1mm bigger and obviously wall between cylinders smaller and that’s the weakest point same as on e46 m3’s...should have actually done head gasket job before swap..ohh welll

    • @PsychoDogBeast
      @PsychoDogBeast 3 года назад +1

      @@The777Garage I should have done my headgasket too, on checking the history one bank had been done with the upgraded metal X5 headgasket and the side that failed was the original. Shame your 4.8s engine had had it, I bet both the B10s would be worth a fair bit now, keep up the good work with the channel, there's nothing better than 80s and 90s BMW's. Cheers james

    I did this swap in my e38, but with a G420 and I kept the external breather system. Well worth the work. And yes you have 2 options for the DME.
    1. Swap a dme from a e53 4.6 is or from a b10 4.6
    2. Flash the DME with 4.6 parameters.

    I thought these V8s have a coolant pipe that goes from front to back within the valley ? They often leak ? Or is that just on the 4.8s?
