  • Nick Wallis, author of 'The Great Post Office Scandal', tells TalkTV how an investigation by the Post Office's David Smith into the Horizon system was not independent, labelling it a "whitewash".
It comes former Post Office chairman Sir Michael Hodgkinson has told the Horizon IT inquiry he “didn’t do anything” to check if the business was prosecuting its own people properly.
After Sir Michael said he was not informed during his induction that the Post Office prosecuted its own staff, Sam Stein KC, who represents a number of subpostmasters, asked: “So when did you learn about the process of prosecution by the Post Office of which you were chair?”
Sir Michael said: “I think that was much later on.”

Just remember that two bosses, who have just given evidence either didn’t realise (that the PO did most of the prosecutions) or can’t remember the detail. After all they were far too senior to be bothered with little individual details about each prosecution.

Unfortunately the timespan and the complexity of the horizon system means that a court would not be able to get to grips with any of the substantive claims in any short time frame. We are still quite away from getting to all the truth and I earnestly hope the Police will be able to charge the relative parties as soon as the Inquiry is concluded. I look forward to hearing just what part UKGI and civil Servants played in the cover up. We have still not heard from GJ PV or AvdB.

That is an option Alan Bates has discussed, and I would be happy to help fund it. I am sure most of the people in the country would so they have enough funds. Bring in a Jury, bring in a highly respected Judge who has seen miscarriages of justice dealt with. The Post Office, PO Lawyers and Fujitsu are not going to getr away with it, However the Inquiry questioning was hard hitting and it's clear they have unearthened a lot of wrong doing, lying, and a** covering. All of this is now building lots of evidence. The police should be prosecuting, and as one MP involved with the PO investigation, criminal proceedings brought

Quote from internet search : "The UK's CPI score fell to 71 out of 100 in 2023, down from 73 in 2022
This is the lowest score the UK has received since the index was revamped in 2012
The decline in the UK's score and ranking is attributed to increased concerns over political corruption, cronyism, and the mismanagement of public funds
The search results indicate that the UK is now perceived as more corrupt than countries like Uruguay, Hong Kong, and Seychelles
This places the UK below many of its Western European peers on the global corruption index"
The question now is : how many Post Office officials and "higher-ups" will face prosecution?

One thing is that 99% of people wont even consider is miscarriages of justice like this are happening every day. But no one pays attention to our is bothered about those because it would take effort to do so.
What this has highlighted is there is a problem with corporate structure. The corporations act needs revising massively. People need to be made personally liable for their actions and not able to hide behind a legal fiction. This "If people are liable for their actions they wont takes risks" approach isn't working out.
Make them personally liable. Stop the injustice.

As an American who is just learning about this tragic story, I am shocked to hear there were somewhere around 900 convictions! Naturally, I have a less educated, macro view of the matter, but I am confused as to how this massive number wouldn't immediately be questioned. Wouldn't the mere suggestion that this huge amount of post office operators was corrupt, raise an eyebrow? Wouldn't this number alone tell you it was the Horizon system, and not the people, that was messing up the accounting?

    • @sallywainman8158

The Post Office kept telling the individual postmasters that they were the only one having problems with Horizon; it was quite a while before Mr Bates was able to start getting them together to share their experiences and fight back.
Those in power did all they could to keep a lid on the Horizon discrepancies because the reputation of the PO was far more important than any justice. eg There are recordings of Paula Vennells asking how they can close down concerns raised by Members of Parliament

Their senior roles demanded that they were obliged to know what they were responsible for. The "I didn't realise" defence is just not credible.

This is England's great chance to clean up the whole mess - the self-protecting establishment, jobs for the boys, incompetence amongst non-executive directors (let alone executive ones), the honours system, over-riding political interests, and so on. The ones guilty in this case need to realise that their lack of diligence and responsibility in all of this is of a criminal nature, and those found responsible need to go to jail, to give a message to everyone else in such positions. And the postmasters must receive their proper compensation. As I said, this is the one chance for the people to speak their mind and make the politicians listen. Not holding my breath, though...
