Have you tried teaching them to break down the numbers in addition and subtraction?

Kindergarten today is basically what first grade was in the 80-90s which is why many states and school districts are requiring children to start with a pre-eclampsia or a transitional or T-k which is part preschool that turns into a beginning kindergarten before they enter kindergarten. They were starting to do this in the late 1990s in Virginia where I started my teaching career. Back then kindergarten was still only a half day program just like it was when I went to kindergarten. When we moved to North Carolina for new teaching positions and to be closer to my parents I was surprised to learn that kindergarten was a all day program. However they included a 45 minute to an hour quiet (rest or nap) time that was slowly changed over the years as they were adding in different types and methods of teaching/learning that the students needed to be more successful and make up for the learning experiences that many of the students who were entering both the pre- K and kindergarten didn't have for multiple reasons .
I have a kindergartener this year. We moved from Illinois last year where two years of Prek as well as a long list of requirements just to get into kindergarten. So our then 5 year old spent her third year in prek. Just to be told it’s not a requirement for kindergarten here. So now she’s bored and advanced in her class. She’s ready to read, and learn math! I’m thinking about homeschooling her next year and just starting first grade this summer with her.
They don’t need pre-k imo. You can teach them at home what they need to know. If you went to school then you can teach them colors shapes numbers etc.

Kindergarten is moving fast these days!! Let them use manipulative…. Pennies, berms, Unifix cubes…. Touching , hearing , reading covers all of the different modes of learning!!!
Young children learn every day. They don’t need flash cards and all of that. Read to then,cook with them,take them on walks and more. Kids are naturally curious at that age.
