Knokke-Heist is a municipality in West Flanders and one of the best-known seaside resorts in Belgium It is located on the border with the Netherlands.
The sea forms the northern border and to the east lies the Zwin Provincial Nature Park as a buffer with the coast of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen (Netherlands). On the south side of Knokke-Heist is Damme and to the west is the seaport of Bruges .
The municipality has more than 33,000 inhabitants.Only in the 11th century did people begin to make gains in their struggle to acquire land on the sea by diking in salt marshes. The region was occupied by foreign powers for many centuries and was often the point of contact between monarchs and royal houses.
Knokke was still a lost village at the end of the 19th century. The development from a polder village to a seaside resort was based on 3 pillars: in 1887 the first allotment by a consortium of project developers 'avant la lettre', the establishment in 1909 of a real estate group 'Compagnie Het Zoute' and in 1922 the start of the expansion 'Albertstrand'. In 1971, the merger of a number of sub-municipalities came about, namely the current Knokke-Heist.
After the First World War, a large amount of ammunition was dumped on a sandbank just off the coast. This ammunition dump is the largest in Belgium.
