What if someone believes he/she can grow in EHD and EHS just by using the scriptures as his/her primary guide?

Anyone can grow in their emotional health by using the scriptures. EHS is designed to be an aid for those that may not know where to start.

Does this mean we just throw away the bible verses mentioned about our hearts being deceitful? If it is true our hearts are deceitful, why look inside ourselves to know God?

Good question! Jeremiah here is prophetically speaking to the Hebrews in Judah who are following after idolatry, pagan divination and are motivated by selfishness and covetousness. Later in the same chapter Jeremiah goes on to speak to observing the Sabbath (rest), and pursuing holiness. In our humanity we cannot achieve these lofty ideals, it is only but the grace of God's Holy Spirit, Christ in you the hope of glory, that this is possible. The next chapter (18) in the book of Jeremiah he says, "But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel after those days,” says the Lord. “Put all your rebellion behind you, and find yourselves a NEW HEART and a new spirit..." (emphasis mine). Psalm 139:22-24 says, "Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life." We can only expect God to do His work in our hearts when we sit in His presence and allow Him to speak to us as only He can. I do believe this is the context in which "looking inside ourselves to know God," is meant to be taken. God bless!

Our hearts CAN be deceitful, but don’t you trust your heart, when it is filled with love for your kids?

@@Terra_Divina True love is a fruit of the Spirit. It is not a fruit of myself (Galatians 5:22). Nothing good dwells in me (Romans 7:18). So, why seek to know myself to know God? That is a false teaching.
