I wasn't around during WWII. My father was one of the Rangers who when up the cliffs of Point Du Hoc. What I do is this: If you were found guilty of rape during WWII, you were hung and buried in an unmarked grave. It went down something along these lines: The victim's statement was submitted via the local police. The victim was interviewed by US military police and/or prosecutor with local investigator present. The crime was then presented before a US military crimes board by the CO, XO, and other officers. Needless to say, the perpetrator was taken into custody, placed in the brig, changed, and medical evidence obtained (if applicable). If found guilty, and many were, the sentence would be death by hanging. It was usually carried out within 2 weeks. That was a special process as well. In very early hours of the day of the hanging, all your insignias would be removed including buttons. You would be dishonorably discharged, and a copy of that document was placed in you left breast pocket. After a meeting with a minister of your choice and your finial declaration, you would be hung. The rope would not be removed. A length of it would be cut, and it would remain around your neck. You would be buried in an old blanket, in a trench. The next convict would be buried with his feet towards your head, and so forth. This area is often in some out of the way corner of a cemetery surrounded by a hedge, so that no one has to look upon you. The graves remain unmarked. I served in Viet Nam. The convicts were not hung, but they were sentenced to much stiffer terms than anything I ever saw in the civilian court. And the evidence presented did NOT require the victim to give in court testimony. Remember: That when you disgrace that uniform, you disgrace ALL who wear it.
Death by hanging for rape? After releasing a ton of purposely young soldiers into a warzone because you know kids don't question orders and are easily impressionable? Look, rape is a terrible crime, but the woman is still alive at the end of it - albeit emotionally scarred. It's an inevitability of war. 18-20 year old males are boys. Their brains haven't fully developed yet. Their hormones are also running wild. You deprive boys of any female contact and not expect rapes to happen? It happens to ALL armies. Even the most "civilized". THe type of punishment you describe is worse than what they'd do for treason or murder. THAT IS INSANE. Rape is not the worst crime you can do. It is up there, but not the worst.
in 1940-1945 a German & Japanese POW was treated better than American black Soldiers. Their uniform truly didn’t matter. American soldiers escaped war crimes because they were victors. Just like today your government & military is a criminal organization

My mom was born in 1930 in a suburb of Paris called Meudon. During the occupation, several of her schoolmates were taken by German soldiers and, well, abused. Her family and entire neighborhood were forced to hold and wave small Nazi flags as soldiers would march by, then they would take the flags back and rough up some of the older men, my grandfather being one of them. She spoke often of the day of liberation and the celebrations taking place while smaller battles and sniper fire raged on. She said it was the biggest celebration she ever saw, and nobody much cared about nearby gunfire. One thing she always stated was how grateful they were to all the soldiers who came to their rescue. She swore then that she'd marry an American someday, met my dad, and here I am talking about it! I visited the city when I was stationed in Germany in the late 70's. I was treated like a king by both my extended family and their friends. That was quite a week of memories I'll always keep. It's Memorial Day today, and I thank every one of the soldiers who did what they did. It was because of them that I am here today. Thank you all!
My uncle went in on D-Day and thru the Battle of the Bulge. He met my aunt Jaqueline in France. They MARRIED in France! She came over on a war brides boat. Their first baby contracted cholera on that voyage and died. They were married for 60 years and had other children. Their first hand stories were detailed, and NEVER contained any of this rubbish!
Yes, that is very true. But you also see some of the greatest acts of selflessness during war. It always seems to come down to the individual who has the courage to put an end to barbarity. To the victims, does it matter if the perpetrators were American or Russian? I think not. Always, always, it comes down to the individual.
I visited a former Nazi internment camp in Lithuania. It was sobering. The guide told us that once the Russian army defeated the Germans in Lithuania, the Russians were worse than the Nazi's. War is awful on so many fronts.
The funny thing about the Lithuanians is that, ethnically and linguistically, they are the closest nation in all of Europe to the original Aryans. And another fun fact: Linguists , reconstructing the original Indo-European language, placed the original Aryan homeland in southern Russia, where the Aryan-obsessed Nazis began to lose the war. A great deal of unsupported supposition and innuendo. Millions of US troops were in France? What percentage of the soldiers committed the actions? The presentation seems to implicate most, instead of a small percentage. Such actions did happen and excuses can be made, but it does not justify the actions. But this was not a common practice of the majority of US troops as the presentation seems to suggest.
Not to apologize for Hitler, but the Polish were committing atrocities against Germans in Danzig, which was the impetus. They asked for Danzig and Danzig alone and were rebuffed. As far as the rape ratio, you may want to check out interracial rape statistics in present day USA. Not pretty.
I recently viewed a documentary, a very old man of an airborne division specifically stated “any soldiers that raped a inhabitants were summarily taken n to the gallows and hung”
It's possible some GI's resorted to vigilante justice against their peers, but there was no such policy enacted by any US military unit. If a commander had attempted it, he would have found himself quickly relieved of command and subjected to judicial punishment. There were instances of GIs murdering POWs, and these were sometimes covered up by their superiors, but it was not an official policy. Patton once caught a good deal of flak from Ike over such an incident which he had tried to ignore and sweep under the rug. The guilty soldier was killed in combat a few weeks later so the matter was dropped, but Ike's warning stood.
Well I have to complete his story, the airborne soldier, he did say he was away from his unit for a time. When he returned a unit mate informed him a soldier in the unit killed a husband threw him down a well and raped his wife. The airborne soldier claimed he asked him, did u kill him? The return response was no, why not? Easier not to interfere, no repercussions? After all it was called, SURVIVAL.
Further more when I was a, youngster, 1950s, 60s. All stories regarding the US soldiers were sanitized, US soldiers were angels compared to the enemy. Now I’ve seen more recent documentaries where US soldiers hint at on the battlefield there was indeed payback for things done previously to American soldiers. The boys were at war without their mothers supervising them. 80 years later. Actually compared to the wholesale slaughter of civilians by nazis, Russian, Italians and their allies, they were angels when dealing out justice on the battlefield.

What was most important for the French was to be free. Thousands of French died under the bombs of the allies, there were some rare soldiers who behaved badly etc... The vast majority of the French considered it a necessary sacrifice in 1944, and were very grateful to the Americans.
And the French have not forgotten. Their children were decorating Allied graves this weekend in Normandy I'm pretty sure. They were when I was there this weekend in 2015.
The novel A Clockwork Orange -which the Kubrick film was based on -was for it's British author, Anthony Burgess, a creative result of a horrifying experience. Shortly after the Second World War, American troops were stationed in London, where Burgess and his wife lived. One day, while out running errands, his wife was raped by two G.I.'s. The resultant trauma proved too formidable for her to bear, leading to her suicide. To endure one's country being occupied or bombarded, only to be monstrously violated by one's liberators or allies, could understandably be a bridge too far.
I think trying to rationalise what happened by drawing direct comparisons to what the Russians and or French colonial troops did is missing the point of the video. Not defending what the Americans did, but I'm sure these crimes were committed by all allied troops across Europe during and post war. Throughout history, troops have committed heinous crimes during times of war regardless of the cause they are fighting for.

In every army there are bad actors but, if any army acted as "conquerors" it was the Nazis. They looted EVERYTHING they could. They shot at people for sport, including my mother. They committed wholesale rape on young French women and even trained their dogs to go down on women by force. When the end finally came and they were vanquished, the French people turned their attention to their own who collaborated with them. There is not a large volume of film footage of how these collaborators were dealt with. most of this record exists only in photographs. The women were usually stripped naked and paraded through the city streets and then taken to a barber shop where their hair was shaved down to their scalp. This, of course, was to stigmatize them so that they could be readily identified as a collaborator and therefore shunned not only by the public at large but also by shopkeepers who would refuse to sell them food and other articles. One of the tasks that the male collaborators that they were forced to perform was to clear minefields. Reparations that Germany (signed by all of the other countries involved) about destroyed Germany. What they were made to pay back was way to high. People died from starvation, plus the stock market crash and the Great Depression... Germany suffered badly. It's one of several reasons Hitler was so well received by the people. I think (can't remember which American president) knew that treaty was going to backfire but signed it anyway. None of this war was right. There were many reasons for it. The Allies thought that Poland would resist longer, at least till the winter.* From the 7th September 1939, the French launched an attack in Saarland in order to relieve Poland. The Germans had evacuated the area, civilians included, and had laid mines and booby traps everywhere. On the 18th, after an advance of about 10 km long by 25 km wide, the units stopped. They were a few kilometers from the Siegfried Line. They encountered no resistance but suffered significant losses from the mines. On the 21st, Poland being virtually beaten, the French troops received the order to retreat to the Maginot Line. In any case, the French didn't have the artillery to breakthrough and couldn't envisage a serious attack on the Siegfried Line, even with the reduce numbers left in the west by the Germans. On the 28th, Warsaw capitulated and on the 6th of October, the last Polish soldiers laid their weapons. The Germans immediately transferred their forces to the west for an offensive that Hitler wanted to launch as soon as possible. It didn't happen before Spring 1940 for different reasons. * At this stage the Brits and the French didn't know anything about "Blitzkrieg". That's why they thought that the Poles would resist longer. It is only when the Germans attacked the Low Countries and France that they realised why the Poles didn't resist long enough to allow them to fully mobilize.
It's a fact that the French people regarded the German army as better behaved than the US army. Also they don't have the same complaint with the British army. It is true no army if perfect, and the US army weren't the same as the Russians, but they have historically had problems. Look up their massacres of refugees in Korea, and their behavior in Vietnam (not just My Lai). Their story doesn't quite align with "truth, justice and the American way", and a video like this helps balance the narrative.
@@navyseal1689 It's all documented, look it up. I have read references to all this many times. For example the US army in Korea when they were retreating were worried about North Korean/Chinese soldiers and spies being in the refugee columns, so their orders were to open fire on them near the front lines. An example was the No Gun Ri massacre of hundreds of women and children. The US army covered it up for a long time, but it and other atrocities in Korea have all been admitted, and the orders to do so. The US armed forces have always had a problem with indiscriminate use of firepower unfortunately.
So anti American the German army was very bad. Having relatives who were in the army during ww2 five uncles were in France after the Normandy invasion served with honor and respected the French civilians ...no respect for the German army. They lost a lot of friends on the fields and villages towns of France.
@@navyseal1689 Don't forget what Giap once answered when asked what was the most difficult between defeating the French and the Americans : "The hardest to beat were the French of course, because unlike the Americans, the French loved us".
Two issues. First, the aircraft shown being downed at about 3:50 is a German plane, yet you speak about downed US airman. Second, the crimes of the Nazi's against the French people pales in comparison.
Amazingly....it’s as if the British Army magically disappeared off mainland Europe at the end of the war, as far as this guy is concerned. Or they were all just, down to the last man...”perfect gentlemen”, of course. 😐

I can’t take a history channel seriously that messes up within the first 30 seconds. The borders of Poland and Germany in 1939 were not the same than they are today. A history channel should know that.

While I don't doubt that some of this occurred, show me your data before I accept the entire story.

Not that it in anyway justifies criminal acts or bad bahavior, but don't forget; during most of World War II Vichy France that quickly allied with Germany, was more than half of France, so until the beginning of The Cold War forced the issue, the Allies including America, were at least subtlety distrustful of France & the French.
Vichy France wasn't formally allied with Germany: it tried to maintain a form of neutrality - although that was eroded over time and it was occupied in 1943.
There isn't a standing army today that hasn't committed them... Other than maybe like.. Mongolia's Navy? They've 3 boats and 1 engine, 4 seaman, and I think a gun?
There were far more Polish pilots in Battle of Britain and their kill ratio outstripped even the British pilots per capita. So no,- the US did not save Britain or europe - it helped. For which we are eternally grateful, but in Britains stand against the Axis probably saved the U.S in the long run.
Very few French were active in the Resistance until the final several months before D-Day; tens of thousands were delivered to the Germans by the French themselves; far more French collaborated in ways little and large until the tide turned. My dad joined the US military in the middle of WWII, eventually rising to a junior officer, serving 4 tours of duty, seeing every major theater of the war. He rarely spoke of his experiences, but one searing memory was the incredible bigotry he often experienced bringing food to civilians in greater Paris. He was shocked and disgusted at their ingratitude, as he later carried home the dog-tags of his best friend shot down over the English Channel and the memories of another comrade wounded then killed by sharks in the seas around the Philippines (three of the very few remembrances he shared).
look the germans and the russians did a deal to attack poland..( at the end of the war the russians demanded they go into hitlers bunker 1st and everything should be left untouched, but the british army sent in a detachment of soldiers to check the bunker out ..) in it was lots of uniforms hung up documents diary and papers in all the rooms . THE SOLDIERS were told on no account were they to take anything ..one of the soldiers was my father ..who told me that he realised afterwards ..he had looked in hitlers office/room there was a lot of papers and books in there .he didnt pick anything up as they had there orders.. the russians arrived a day or so after ( and took all paper /books/documents...and had orders to burn everything ..( they made a bonfire outside ) oh yes..the USSR didnt want anybody to find possible paper work pointing the finger at them..
An important fact missing at the start of the video: Soviet Union invaded Poland starting Sept. 17 and subsequently annexed almost half of Poland 's land base (Molotov -Ribbentrop Pact). Without the Soviets attacking from the east Poland would have withstood Nazi Germany alone much longer.
I'm pretty sure they would be a lot happier having Americans there than the hell they had been through for 4 years, even if they acted with entitlement and arrogance.

William Calley and Ernest Medina + the troops in my lai got away scott free
Death by hanging for rape? After releasing a ton of purposely young soldiers into a warzone because you know kids don't question orders and are easily impressionable?
Look, rape is a terrible crime, but the woman is still alive at the end of it - albeit emotionally scarred. It's an inevitability of war. 18-20 year old males are boys. Their brains haven't fully developed yet. Their hormones are also running wild. You deprive boys of any female contact and not expect rapes to happen? It happens to ALL armies. Even the most "civilized".

Yes, that is very true. But you also see some of the greatest acts of selflessness during war. It always seems to come down to the individual who has the courage to put an end to barbarity. To the victims, does it matter if the perpetrators were American or Russian? I think not. Always, always, it comes down to the individual.

The funny thing about the Lithuanians is that, ethnically and linguistically, they are the closest nation in all of Europe to the original Aryans.

This video fails to mention the German's destruction to one entire French town as well as the killing of the entire population (ala Lidice).

My mother lived through the Nazi invasion and occupation of France. So, your hearing this from the experiences that she endured and relayed to me. All done under the watchful eyes of machinegun crews just in case anyone decided that they wanted to walk off the job.

Soviet built Tanks typically had no radios either. Nor aircraft. No one cared... what mattered is that the Tank be capable if running and shooting. @@duartesimoes508 What a load of rubbish you wrote, reanalyze why France fell, lack of communications (radios) with its military units and incompetent leadership. Soviets were useless as well. Still are.
Damn. Learn your history. Germany hated France because of WW1. WW2 happened because of WW1 but the fault doesn't fully lie on Frances shoulders. No one country was the good guy or bad guy. You have to know history to understand why things happened. You need to go back maybe 3 centuries of Europe's history to understand anything. My point.... Don't believe everything you hear. You'll find out the history you thought you know was something in someone's brain, and wasn't the way things happened and sometimes it's not even close.
All the countries involved in WW1 were exhausted. Only Germany rebuilt their army with the intention of going back to another huge war even the the treaty of versailes (sp?) specifically said Germany could only have a small amount of troups and no new implements of war could be gathered. But they did and were about the only country that did so at that time. No one saw another war coming as fast as it did. No one was prepared. To say that the French ran away with their tails between their legs is simply not true. The allies went in and saved France. French people's are not cowards. It's an untruth told over and over til people assume it happened.

If this covered what Soviets did in Berlin you'd all be crying but when US war crimes are brought up all everyone says is ,,such is war" and even try to justify it. Hypocrisy
The beginning is slightly incomplete - let's not forget that on September 17th, Russia (USRR) attacked Poland from the other side.
They were supposed to attack the same day Germany did, but Stalin was waiting to see if France and England decide to respect their allegiance with Poland or not.
If they actually did and sent real forces to attack Germany, USRR would not attack. Poland was waiting for that attack to get a breath and launch counter attack together with the others or at least stall German forces and keep them occupied while the other side rides for Berlin.
France and Brits together had massive military back then and majority of German forces were - obviously - on the other side of the country. Had they done this, the war would most likely end within months.
Unfortunately, it didn't happen...
"France and Brits together had massive military back then and majority of German forces were - obviously - on the other side of the country. Had they done this, the war would most likely end within months." :
It was not that simple. In September 1939 the Brits and the French needed time to fully mobilize their troops.
Proof?
@@navyseal1689 It's all documented, look it up. I have read references to all this many times. For example the US army in Korea when they were retreating were worried about North Korean/Chinese soldiers and spies being in the refugee columns, so their orders were to open fire on them near the front lines. An example was the No Gun Ri massacre of hundreds of women and children. The US army covered it up for a long time, but it and other atrocities in Korea have all been admitted, and the orders to do so. The US armed forces have always had a problem with indiscriminate use of firepower unfortunately.
