    Way better than the Giles Martin remix; less cluttered and less bass heavy, leaving all of the instruments and vocals space to breathe organically.

      Giles is not his dad, that's for sure. Mixing Sgt Pepper to hear all the instruments wasn't the goal of the original mix, it's like taking a painting by Picasso and brightening certain colors that the artist wasn't trying to emphasize.

    You've done it again. Just when I thought that GM did a good job on a remix, you come in with your version and improve it by orders of magnitude. To me, not only are the vocals cleaner and crisper, the bass seems to have better articulation. I am a huge fan of PMC'c bass sound in this period. He's using his Ric 4001 and playing it through a Vox 7120 amp. A very rare amp that he used for only this album and for the 1966 world tour. I know this sound well as I own both the bass and the amp.

    Excellent video! Appropriately eerie and psychedelic.
    Mix-wise, nothing will ever beat the fake stereo US release on Capitol's _Yesterday And Today_ vinyl album (Beatles on original vinyl is a MUST for any fan). For me, that mix is the one that just sounds right for this song. The backwards guitar parts are a little different in a way that I like better, too.

      @britt2001b  5 месяцев назад +1

      Glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you! I only had the mono 'Yesterday & Today' back in 1966 in which the backwards guitar didn't appear until about 1:20 in this song. I was very shocked when the guitar came in much earlier in the stereo version.

    • @BigBri550
      @BigBri550 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@britt2001b Interesting, isn't it. The Y&T mix holds off on the backwards guitar until the first "takin' my time" when it suddenly swoops in. So much cooler and startling than the more common stereo mix.
      But there is also something about the stereo simulation on "Sleeping" that actually worked. Like I said before, it always sounded right to me even though it was just the mono mix slightly bastardized.

    Sound and video are Fantastic!!!!...video is pretty cool!!!! What is ADT?

    • @britt2001b
      @britt2001b  5 месяцев назад

      Thank you! ADT (artificial double tracking) is a process to make a vocal sound 'thicker'. Before the artificial process was created, an artist would sing their vocal twice, superimposing each vocal together in sync for this thicker sound. ADT is just copying the first vocal and superimposing this copied track slightly out of sync with the first to achieve double tracking without the artist having to re-sing it again. The process was used quite often during this era but quickly lost favor. ADT can subconsciously confuse the mind as it's trying to determine is it hearing one voice or two? For me, this confusion is distracting from the overall enjoyment of the song.

      Yes and here in the states we got to hear it first but it was presented in awful fake stereo because E.M.I. sent Capitol the newly mixed mono version. In the rush to release 'Yesterday & Today' Capitol did not want to wait for the E.M.I. stereo mix. Later releases of 'Yesterday & Today' included the real stereo mix. Fortunately I had the mono version which had different 'backwards' guitar embellishments in "I'm Only Sleeping."

    I'M GOOD AT SWEEPING

(sung by a John Lennon sound-alike to the tune of 'I'm Only Sleeping' by The Beatles)
    When I break a piece of fam'ly china-
    I stare in shock, pretend it's minor.

    There's the evidence spread on the floor!

    I grab the broom and close the door (close the door).
    Please, don't blame me; no, don't shame me;

    Leave me be; you see…I'm good at sweeping.

    Everybody seems to think I'm gawky;

    I don't mind-I'm from Milwaukee.
    Dropping precious heirlooms is a breeze;

All it takes is one quick sneeze (one quick sneeze)!

    Please, don't look about then scream and shout
    'Cause, after all…I'm good at sweeping.

    Keeping an eye out for her coming back from her sister's-
    Biding my time.
    Standing here and waiting through tense moments;

    Till she's home and trouble foments.

    [Backwards Guitar solo]
    Please, don't rant and rave and call me 'Knave!'
    'Cause, after all…I'm good at sweeping.
    Ooh, yeah!
    Keeping an eye out for her coming back from her sister's-
    Biding my time.
    When I wake up early in the morning
    She's irate without forewarning.

    Seems she found the pieces in the trash.
    Here it comes: the big backlash (big backlash)!

    Please, don't hit me; no, don't sit me

    Down and chew me out! I'm good at sweeping!

    Sounds great! John Lennon usually either double-tracked his lead vocals or, after EMI's engineers had created the ADT device, requested its use. I remember him saying in an interview once that he thought his voice wasn't good enough without it, that DT or ADT made it sound "thicker" or something. It's as if he thought he sounded too "thin" when recorded dry. But I've gotta say, Britt, his voice sounds wonderful on this remix. I don't know if John would have wanted this done, but I like it very much. His voice certainly was better than he imagined it to be. Nice work!!!!!

    • @britt2001b

      Thank you! Yes, John certainly underestimated his voice. E.M.I. created artificial double tracking because of his displeasure with having to sing his vocal twice. If you listen close to some of his natural double tracked vocals you'll hear him singing different words at times.

Lennon often changed up lyrics for humorous effect, ever the wise-cracker he, but sometimes it surely was accidental, e.g., when double-tracking a lead vocal and messing up a word or an inflection here or there. I think his imperfections usually put most other singers' "perfect" takes to shame. He had his insecurities, but they pale against his amazing catalog of great songs with great lead vocals. He and George were also great in harmony backup vocals behind Paul's songs, and sometimes Lennon took the lead guitar part. All four of those guys (plus George Martin, Billy Preston, and on rare occasions, others) were wonderful musicians. People will be listening to their recordings for centuries if we don't drive ourselves extinct first.

      @@britt2001b I believe if Geoff Emerick had originally mixed Revolver in stereo he would've placed both voices in the middle. ADT was invented to strengthen the vocal - splitting it widely doesn't serve that purpose. It's one of my criticisms of Giles.

      @britt2001b  5 месяцев назад

      You are. I just removed the wide panned ADT. I'm just not sure if the first double tracking of his vocal was artificial or natural. The second double tracking is definitely ADT just panned hard left and hard right.

  • @onderov

    • @britt2001b
      @britt2001b  5 месяцев назад

      Yes the lead vocal is still double tracked. After this vocal was double tracked an additional layer of wide panned ADT (artificial double tracking) was added. I only removed the wide panned double tracking. I'm not sure if the original vocal was naturally double tracked or artificially double tracked.

    • @onderov
      @onderov 5 месяцев назад

      @@britt2001b The lead vocal was NOT double tracked. That's why they used ADT on it to artifically double track it. If you want to hear it single tracked without ADT, just play the right channel only of the 1966 stereo mix. You can hear it's single tracked. The only double tracked lines are at the end of verse "I'm still yawning" and "float up stream". But it sounds more like Paul doubling John rather than John manually doubling himself.

    • @britt2001b
      @britt2001b  5 месяцев назад

      Now I'm confused. In my remix I eliminated the left channel vocal from Giles' remix and placed the right channel vocal in the center. I still hear two voices. The only logical solution would be why would Giles double track the original 1966 right channel vocal? Doesn't make sense. You're right, the 1966 version has a single track in the right with an out sync single tracked vocal in the left. In Giles' version I'm hearing two vocals in the right ADT'd to the left.

    • @onderov
      @onderov 5 месяцев назад

      @@britt2001b I'll give the remix a listen. But for the original mix they panned the vocal to the right and the ADT signal, which is basically a 30 ms delay, to the left. Maybe Giles doubled the vocal panned it to the right and then doubled it again panned that to the left? My guess. Anyway, you'd get cleaner non ADT vocal by extracting the vocal from the right channel of the original 1966 stereo mix rather than Giles mix, imo.

    • @britt2001b
      @britt2001b  5 месяцев назад

      It sounds like that's what he did. Essentially that would have the same result as ADT as he had to delay the left channel a bit to keep it from meeting in the center.

    Hi Britt, regarding recording processes, admittedly I’m largely ignorant. What in your opinion is the benefit of removing the ADT in John’s vocal? Why was this technique used initially? Much appreciated, B.

    • @britt2001b
      @britt2001b  5 месяцев назад +1

      It's not just removing the ADT, it's removing the wide-panned ADT. In this case, it brings the vocal back to the center channel where it sounds more natural. Sound engineers used this technique to thicken weaker voices. For example, it wasn't necessary to double track Sinatra's voice because it just wasn't needed. ADT (artificial double tracking) was created to keep the singer from having to manually record his or her vocal twice. Not easy to do as each word, phrase and vocal inflection had to be sung the same in both takes. ADT was commonly used in the mid sixties but soon fell out of favor. Thanks for the question and many thanks for listening!
