Stuck in the past. I'm 41 and I grew up with the OGs of all these modern remakes and I have been loving them. RE2-4, FF7 & Rebirth, Dead Space and Silent Hill 2 have all been amazing so I can't get with the whiny clowns.
If I recall right, if James used a melee weapon in this part of the fight, Eddie will only attack the same way. He won't try to shoot...and James swings faster than Eddie.
that's why I never complain about remake's combat. at least it looks more challenging. the enemies can dodge, grab, and counter our attacks now. and we have to read Their movement and dodge to avoid fatal damage. while the original.... it's looks so simple and... outdated for today standard. p.s actually, Eddie fight is not easily as it's seems. if you used the wrong weapon. the fight will a lot harder. ex. wooden plank, it heavy attack could stunlock Eddie in phase 1(except phase 2) but the moment he's staggered. he's pissed off and shoot us instantly. the light attack could stunlock him only when he's walking. if he's start using revolver. its impossible for us to not get shots. handgun is even worse, it's barely staggering him. shotgun is strong enough to make him staggered. but it's too slow. The fight will turns into turn-based game where you and Eddie exchange the shots. The rifle is best choice for firearms. It's strong enough to staggering him and faster than shotgun. If you didn't miss any shot. You could stunlock him entire phase 1. However, you'll receive some damage in phase 2 because Eddie will engaging to punched you more often. And his fist is faster than your next shots. For melee combat. Steel pipe is the best choice. Since it could stunlock him in both phase. In phase 1, he will be pissed after take a hit and try to punched us as much as possible. Which turn out to be his downfall(as you can see in this video). In phase 2, he's using revolver more often. But he's too slow, that we could walk to him and smash him before he could make a shot, over and over until he's gone.

The remake actually has him acting insane and trying to really hurt James (taunting him and needlessly rushing to pistol whip him). Silent Hill itself is altering the environment as you fight until one person falls and another leaves the freezer. Add in that some of the bodies we see Eddie around were killed by him, meaning we are fighting someone seasoned in killing what he perceives as real people. The original does not have this luxury as Eddie had not killed a single person up to then. Unless you intend to extrapolate some sort of deeper significance in the gameplay from the original (that was not remotely intended by the original devs), the Remake beats this fight by miles.

I only know this because of a Remake detractor who complained about it not being ambiguous. It’s a continuity not shown in the original. Add on the fact that they approached Eddie and James relationship in the remake in a more sympathetic light compared to the original. If it’s Angela, Mary, Maria, Laura or even Pyramid Head, there is room for argument on both ends. But Eddie is just better in the remake in nearly every sense.

And this is what is meant by rose colored glasses. I LOVE the original but anyone who says its a "better" game than the remake are just flat out wrong. Granted I have seen praise for the remake 99% of the time now and well deserved but anyone who usually says they prefer the original its followed with "well the character design and messed up VA made it more creepy" or "the clunky combat made me more scared." Basically how can I explain away poor gameplay or story telling design to excuse why I like the original more 😂. Just say its a nostalgia kick and be done with it lol
